    What a shame. I own two tents from Alps Mountaineering's heavy duty Outfitter line - the Taurus and the Extreme, and have had nothing but good experiences with them. As for the customer service of Alps; I will say that despite having to email them directly not being everyone's cup of tea; they were very fast and responsive the one time I needed to use it. I had asked them for advice on patching a tear on the fly and follow up re-applying a waterproofing after a major storm in Acadia had brought down some branches on the Extreme. Within two hours of the initial email, I was sent a reply asking for a shipping address, and instructions on a temp patch - they not only sent a new fly; but also a fitted ground sheet and a tent storage bag. Was a nice a little surprise to find once I got home from the trip.

    I have used an Alps Mountaineering Lynx 2 for the better part of 10 years and have never had an issue with it, I love that tent. I also have had one of their inflatable sleeping pads. I have replaced it with a nemo pad, but it gets used as a spare for the kids due to being too narrow for me. I have not purchased anything from them since so I can't comment on any newer products. I have replaced the Lynx 2 with the One Tigris Cosmitto 2.0 based on Luke's review and I love it. My son now uses the Lynx 2, and it serves him well.

    Never pay attention to those little signs that say contact the manufacturer rather than returning it. It goes back to the store if the product is defective period. The company has no impetus to fix your problem -they can drag it on for months on end or just ignore you, and meanwhile the return window has closed.
    The only good thing is that poly does not stretch when wet, that is a property of nylon. Bad thing is that poly is a bit easier to damage.

    • @Wyrm1701

      Under UK law your contract as the customer is with the company you bought the product from. So, never mind all this guff about not returning to the vendor store; UK law compels you to do this and also lets the manufacturer off the hook; the manufacturer has no legal obligation to an end customer.

    Hi Luke! Well, welcome to the modern day world! A LOT of products aren't worth the materials they are made of. Badly designed and engineered, just send the design over to (insert country name here) and have them popped out, then sell them to un-informed customers and let's make us some money. We are fortunate we have you, Luke, to let us know what is crap and what is worth our HARD earned money! GOOD LUCK testing this thing!

  • @chalion8399
    @chalion8399 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So glad I had purchased that OneTigris 2P net tent and have a very good tarp. Both cost less than this and weigh about the same and pack down very small. Yes I have to either use sticks, a ridgeline between trees or hiking poles, but airflow, comfort and keeping dry & away from bugs are my minimum requirements.
    This bivy doesn't even punch one of my requirements.

    I've always considered Alps a car camping heavier/cheaper option for just that. I think I've had a couple of their tents over time, I know I bought one for my kids. We always tarped them as well, so I don't recall ever having an issue... but we did our best to avoid such, I also think the size of their tents are a tad larger than similar tents. I think REI sells many of their products (or used to).

    Thanks for the video. This is sad. I have an Alps Mountaineering Lynx 1 and Lynx 2 that I bought years ago. Both have served me well and I still use them to this day. In fact I actually rode out the edge of Hurricane Matthew up in the Uwharrie National Forest in NC in the Lynx 1 without any issues...although it was a little nerve-wracking to say the least.
    Could this be a case of good intentions - bad execution? I agree that the guyout points make no sense at all. I'm also sure that this thing would turn into a sauna in the summer here. Hopefully this isn't an indication of things to come from Alps Mountaineering.

    Back n the 1970's I had a cheap little bivy tent that went on a lot of backpacking trips. It was a little embarrassing to pull this out when everyone else had expensive tents, but it did it's job and had all the features this thing lacks. The only time it failed me was in an ice storm when the weight of ice caused it to sag and froze the foot end of the tent to my sleeping bag. To think that that there was better, cheaper, tech than this 50 years ago is pretty sad.

  • @sniperforce34
    @sniperforce34 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'd say if the bivy didn't come with all guidelines to secure the bivy, most educated people always have 550 chord on hand or number 36 bank line, it's a simple fix that people purposely make a bigger deal and problem then it needs to be, as for it's use for stealth camping, that's why most of us carry a foliage colored tarp 10x10 to cover it up. Dimple fixes for a simple solution, to a simple project/problem. never make it a bigger deal then it needs to be.. Mr Murphy always mays a cameo in certain ways

    In Scotland, this is not a bivvy, we could carry Haggis in the bag it came in though,

    This product has some virtues but is overall wildly out of touch. Needs to tension at the top as you said, and if not side guy lines, maybe a small spreader pole for the middle. It doesn't need a huge area of mesh, but an area of mesh at the head end would be wise. They call it the "stealth" and then make it white and bright red? Also, haven't we made it clear that pole sleeves are annoying? Well, they're a tight radius with glass poles, so OK, but they very easily could be made less tight so that they aren't a chore.
    I actually like that they make it clear that they want customers to contact them directly with issues instead of the retailers. I respect that a lot.
    This is lazy, out-of-touch design. Alps has been one of my go-to recommendations for budget shelters, but this isn't one of them.
    Ultimately, bivies and "bivy-tents" aren't for me, so perhaps my opinion means nothing, but this looks like a waste of $100

    That bivy is not for me! Hey Luke can you review the new Alpkit Ultra 1 ultralight tent, it comes out at 2 pounds/ 900 grams for €300 here in Europe, cheers from Norway.

    Motorcycle riders on overnight trips could entertain using this tent. Camper entry is interesting. Too small and limited ventilation rules it out for me. JimInCincy.....

    As a routinied stealthcamper of the #StealthCampingAlliance I can confirm it is nothing at all stealth. Except maybe when stealthcamping on a pile of trash. It might ble d in there.
    For stealthcamping I will stick to my nightcat hammock/bivvy.

    Nope. I can't see using a bivy when a 1P tent weighs a few oz more. I love my REI Quarterdime 1P. I chose it over a bivy.
