I feel bad for the Jiang children and Wei Wuxian for having incompetent parental figures have misplaced their anger towards their kids and ward, using them to fuel their fighting and lack of communication, and generally not being emotionally present in their growth. Forcing them to learn bad behavior. For Jiang Yanli having to become a surrogate mother figure to her brothers and lowering her self-esteem by belittling her skills and her personal enjoyment (like the Lotus Seed Pod extra chapter where Yu Ziyuan got angry at the Jiang disciples, JWY & WWX for being shirtless while in front of JYL, even tho she didn't mind since was there to bring them food so she expected it, and then turned that anger to her despite her daughter offering her food as well). And Jiang Wanyin got his anger issues and inferiority complex from his mother's constant comparrison and his father's blatant favoritism (which turns out to be a huge lie because JFM loved his kids more than his ward because only WWX was given an order to protect his kids BY HIM and not words of well wishes like the Jiang siblings 🙄). Wei Wuxian's fearless habit of breaking the rules because he KNOWS he'll be punished whether or not he breaks them so he might as well give them a reason to do so. Also him sacrificing himself and working himself to the bone for people who gave him even the bare minimum of kindness aka his lack of self worth. The Jiang siblings and WWX deserve better than the treatment they got from their parental figures.
Sorry for the rant 😭 I just feel passionate about the issues of the Jiang matriarch and patriarch. While JFM could've stepped up and done a lot better, YZY was the worst of the two for (1) comparing and back handedly or straight up belittling her blood children, (2) continues to spite a dead woman who her husband may or may not had feelings for at one point via hurting said dead woman's son and singling him out every time (like I would've understood if she was just a parent who was dropped another responsibility without talking because I know some people who don't want to take care of outsiders, since WWX is an outsider to her since she didn't like his mother and idk her feelings on Wei Changze but i doubt they were close) and (3) putting the blame of her children's misery solely on JFM even tho she did most of the damage. While Jiang Fengmian was favoriting WWX, she could've been there to comfort her children by lifting them up like telling them she loves them and she's proud of their accomplisments not bringing them down with her constant judging of her son's skills when he doesn't measure up to WWX's fast learning and undervalue her daughter's love and skill of cooking. Same in vice versa, if YZY is her usual self, JFM could've stepped up and rebuke her constant claim that WWX is his bastard, show more enthusiasm at his son's accomplisments or maybe even put JWY first before WWX (for example, if they both did well in archery, compliment your son first then your ward or do it together and specify what you saw they did differently and compliment that) or treat them equally. If one does wrong, correct them equally. Or hell just affirm your affections to your children as genuine and not let them be blinded by the hate coming from their mother.
i agree, they were just kids,, they didn't deserve any of it :"/ i don't hate madam yu, i kinda understand why she acts like that but still she had no right to treat her children like that i think the worst parent was jfm and i feel like he's the reason why madam yu acts like that, not wwx being an outsider. The way he ignores his own kids makes my blood boil,, i didn't read the novel i just watched the donghua and at first i didn't realize he was jiang chengs father,, i don't think he talked to him or yanli the whole donghua, he literally acts like they don't exists and i hate him for it in the end (imo) they are both terribal parents but jfm sucks more

I used to dislike Jiang Fengmian to the same degree as Yu Ziyuan, but the more I re-read the novel and other adaptations (minus CQL because I haven't gotten around it yet) about how JFM does love his children that he explicitly stated to the child he supposedly favored more than his own blood son to take care of his heir and no mention of Wei Wuxian also taking care of his well being. Like he expects WWX to take care of his children like he's just another disciple dedicated to the Yunmeng Jiang and not his "adopted" son or ward, speaks volumes of how he sees his kids than his old friend's kid. AND THE FACT THAT WWX WAS NOT SURPRISED AT ALL IN THE NOVEL. The fact that even WWX can see that JFM's love for JWY just makes me think about how much the narrative of JFM's favoritism is false and what's the truth, because isn't rumors spread by what one person sees briefly? Maybe all of it is true and I'm overthinking it but the same skepticism I'm giving the rumors about future Jiang Wanyin torturing demonic cultivators in anger of WWX returning (even though there has been evidence pointing to the truth, i've been convinced somehow), is the same one I'm giving JFM's favoritism on WWX. Especially since Yu Ziyuan also trusted Zidian to JFM in the brief moment of JFM finding the tied up JWY and WWX before heading to the burning Lotus Pier, that implies that she also knew he would do the right thing (aka make sure their son leaves to safety with the one person who'd make sure their child's safety would be placed over their own) and he loved their son just as much as she did. Although what a pathetic and subtle way of showing it to your son who YOU KNOW has problems distinguishing affection unless its blatantly said and is repeated without interferences, that's on JFM definitely. Also I don't know if it was noticable, but I know JFM loved his children and showed it to them especially when he called off JYL's engagement. Not just because of the fight between his head disciple and her fiance but he used it as an excuse to get her out of (at the time) a loveless marriage that he constantly ask his daughter's feelings for because he knows the pain of a strained marriage (its also quite obvious JFM loves his wife in the way he respects his wife and buys her gifts, also came back for her which he said in the audio drama). He also made kites with her for JWY and WWX in Chp 32 of the novel (Cute!). Basically, its really hard to say he didn't love his kids but its also hard to defend his neglect on JWY because I don't think he handled it very well. He's too passive.
TL;DR: JFM is not as one dimentional as i initially thought so moved him up the shit list. YZY has been moved up slightly but only because I knew she fiercely loved her kids and her sect but her insecurities, pride and temper ultimately did not win for me nor did it give her kids a better childhood. To give her credit tho, I did enjoy the moments MDZS Q gave her. I kind of like her better in there and in CQL (even though I didn't finish it and only saw clips here and there), much better than me thinking too deeply on how in the Lotus Seed Pod extra, she immediately whipped out zidian and striked WWX once for being indecent when there was her son and OTHER Jiang disciples who were also indecently dressed in front of Yanli. I liked her Donghua and CQL version better than thinking about how WWX pointed how he was singled out and whipped after the fact when everyone else did it too and the others including the Jiang siblings didn't even flinch or shown visible distress as if it wasn't the first time YZY has attacked WWX with Zidian in public. And maybe I could've given her the benefit of the doubt by calling it discipline IF she had done it to everyone who committed the offence. BUT I will not think of that since I'm only gonna think of her donhua and cql adaptations.👍 Overall, I love how complex her character is so I don't hate her or JFM. Just really think they should've done better and that the Yunmeng Trio deserved better parenting than the one they got.
