    #1: I'm surprised that the sprayfoam is that popularly amongst you boaters. It's not a joke but wool from australian sheep is by far the best insulation you can have. It's ventilating (almost no moisture to take care of), it's environmentally friendly, easy to use, and not to costly. ie your boat is not already foamed...
    #2: If you hadn't considered already; electric upwords and water downwords except for where you have an electric pump...
    #3: Your vlogs are both funny and informative!
    #4: keep on vlogging!

    There is an old, old tool that used to be used for making wooden shingles; basically a thick knife blade roughly a foot and a half long, between two wooden handles. I once saw one used to trim spray-foam insulation on some home handyman TV show. It worked sort of like a cheese slicer on the TV show--except the slices were wide. The workman lined the blade up against the wall studs, then pulled down to shear through the foam, trimming it back to the level of the studs quickly and evenly. Know of any blacksmith shops or farm tool dealers in your area?

    As a fan of foam insulation there will be no condensation w/out air flow between the steel & foam & in the worst case of sinking the foam would not likely need to be replaced & might keep the boat near the surface for easy re-floating ($2400 vs $8000)

    • @ItsOhJoe

    Looks like the correct preparation wasn’t done prior to the spray foam insulation being applied. I would recommend the battens being covered with tape such as the black polyurethane black cloth tape that I had put on mine, before spray-foaming took place; only £1.59 a roll from Zoro tools - 10m long, 50mm wide. It might take a couple of hours or so to ‘tape-up’, but it does make things so much easier as there isn't any, or very limited, cutting back to do along the length of the battens. Ein sight is a curious thing.
    Enjoying your vlog, BTW 😉

    • @ItsOhJoe
      @ItsOhJoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Danny, Joe !! We're about to make our first steps to getting out of the system (ish) and onto a boat. would like your opinion on insulation. I know you're pretty new to it too but being there, doing it is closer than we are.... would you rule out a sheet insulated boat against a foam insulated (if both were correctly installed of course) love to you both and keep smiling 🙂

    • @ItsOhJoe
      @ItsOhJoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spray foam insulation itself it great and gets into all the odd shapes of a boat hull. There’s also no need for a vapour barrier as the foam is bonded directly (worth reading into but that’s what we believe). Just yeah make sure all of the battens are securely in place where you need them before getting someone to foam!

    • @ItsOhJoe
      @ItsOhJoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yeah it would be a different story if we'd have had a chance to install the batten properly but the boat came pre sprayed, on curved surfaces (like our ceiling) it's save a lot of time.

    I’m a few weeks away from spray foaming my project boat, I was wondering on your thoughts on the whole process, now you’ve gone through it would have rather used insulation board? I worried about moisture behind the board, at least with foam it seals to the metal/paint

    • @ItsOhJoe
      @ItsOhJoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our boat came pre spray foamed so we didn't have a chance of securing the battens properly/ensuring they're in the right places to start with so it's not the insulations fault in it's defence. Our advice would be to ensure the battens are secure and then taped off to ensure easy removal of excess foam!

    Standard practice with spray foam is to screw 1/2" wooden battons to the metal frame and then attach the boards to that. Anywhere that there is exposed metal from the boat frame and boat skin is a condensation spot. The way you have done it may lead to issues. I believe there is meant to be an air gap between the boards and the foam insulation. You may have gained 1" on the boat interior (which is good) but sacrificed the longevity of the interior. Still a great video though, but thought I should say something incase you hadnt realised. I hope other people with 'expert' knowledge can confirm or refute what I have written, or if you could maybe explain why your method is better.

    • @ItsOhJoe
      @ItsOhJoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yes in an ideal world we'd like to have had the chance of fitting all the battens securely ourselves and then have the boat spray foamed but the boat already came sprayed! The majority of the walls do have an air gap which is good, although it's just near the top where there's little gap.

    I once used that expanding foam that comes in an aerosol contraption, that came with a warning that if got on clothing, if not removed immediately, can only be Mechanically Removed. They were dead right, i ruined a near decent pair of WORKING jeans and nearly took my skin off trying to clean up. Everything has its perfect use, but User Beware. If it comes to using wool, which is very cheap in England, it is now beginning to replace fibre glass as it is cheap and there is a plentiful supply.
