    Wall ties should be secured at the closest possible point where the tie is bent and use coated screws. Leaving slack in the wall tie (anchor) will allow the wall to pull away. And the brick washing solution contains muratic acid. Note how the fumes steamed from the bucket as he added the solution to water. Those fumes are harmful to your respiratory system. Also, never apply cleaner to dry brick. Always wet the wall prior to application. Failure to wet the surface prior to cleaning may result in an etching or discoloration of the mortar joints, especially with colored mortars. Wear rubber gloves and never use cleaning detergents without eye protection. Wearing a rain coat helps keep the chemicals off your skin as well. I am not bashing the craftsman in the video. I am just giving information based on my experience as a bricklayer and things I have learned over 25 years in the trade.

    I never thought that I would enjoy a bricklaying movie as much as I have the one's on this channel, he's very knowledgeable and obviously extremely consistent and a true professional... My dad used to lay bricks many years ago. I'm tempted to learn myself now that I'm nearly 50!! You still selling DVD's ?

      because when this video was made in the late 80's it wasn't required and left up to the home owner, and they decided to skip it. Todays codes would require it.

      Learn To Lay Brick ok. That explains a lot. I pressure wash houses using a soft wash and I also clean gutters out and the things I see is amazing.

    When I was a kid 30 years I worked a summer university break with a brick cleaner.We were using dilute hydrochloric acid.It was vicious stuff.As I was scrubbing I felt a pain on the forearm.I was horrified to see that the acid had eaten away my shirt sleeve.Luckily the plumbing was installed and I washed my arm for ages under the shower.I finished work that day in pain.I woke the next day with huge acid burns on my forearm.Not wanting to seem a pussy and call in sick,I applied antiseptic cream and went back to work.To add insult to injury,we had to clean those bricks 3 times,the bloody mortar mix used was like epoxy and stuck like shit to a blanket.Every time I drive past that damn building the memory comes flooding back.

    I am just a fan of construction and brick laying and I still wonder how they cast a beam on top of a double brick wall as in 3:35 . The concrete can go straight down in between the walls. How do they do it?

    I am curious what is the difference between using brick ties and metal mesh+mortar? Is mesh+mortar more reliable in securing brick wall?

      @learntolaybrick  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      not sure I understand the question. Metal mesh and mortar on the wood behind the wall like is done with cultured stone?

    I own a 1960's ranch home in the US- wood frame with brick veneer. Asphalt sheet type sheathing was originally used, with no type of moisture wrap like Tyvek. The home has experienced termite damage and some of the exterior walls will need to be reframed. I have some contractors telling me it's not a problem to reframe and repair it and other's telling me they literally don't know if it can be done because there would be no way to retie the brick veneer wall into the new framing. Is there an approved standard method to retie the brick veneer into a newly framed wall from the interior (or some way to tie the brick veneer to the newly framed wall from the exterior instead of the interior) so that the brick would maintain its structural security? Any advice would be extremely appreciated!!

      yes. Not recommended but wasn't required at the time and was left up to the home owner. But is required now and should be used to code.

      I would love to see the jobs where when doing the next lift some mortar isn't dropped down below. Its easy to say it shouldn't and believe me in 50 years of masonry subcontracting I would be thrilled if the guys could keep the mud off the wall. But in reality it just doesn't happen beyond just a 4ft lift.
