- Hi, this trying to fix video shows me attempting to repair a children's toy car simulator.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.
It is amazing the amount of engineering that goes into these toys. I had no idea they were so mechanically intricate inside. Thanks for the enlightening video, Vince.
Sorry this is so old... 5yr? But you are so right. I couldn't stop thinking that. I don't want to poo poo this toy but couldn't this engineering, time and effort be used for a better purpose? Seems a bit of a waste. Cheers!
You inspired me, my power plug on my laptop has been giving me problems for several months. Fixed it once............ but it didn't last, well it did for about a year. Took my laptop apart last night to fix it.........long story short i don't have the patience you do and i now have a new laptop.
Picture this: it's November, the Argos catalogue has just dropped. Massive brick of a book. I wizz straight to the toy section and there is this beauty but with a Porsche logo on it. So much nostalgia
I got more nostalgic when he said last day of school bring a toy in
I used to have one of those lol. You should get out to a boot sale you'll find loads of interesting things!
I had one identical to this when I was younger, forgotten all about it until now!
When yo first took it apart, I said to my self, now you're in DEEP and what's more HOT water, but then I remembered, your experience with clocks, not to forget watches, I then smirked and thought, nope as daunting as it seems, the mudder will get fixed, well fixed as long as there are gears available.. dropped a like as usual Vince..
Thanks for the support my friend :-)
Am I the only one that noticed the tacho goes too 100000 rpm? :) Nice job mate! Who knew these things were so relatively advanced inside. My brother had one when we were kids, it was awesome!
Your patience is amazing, I would have smashed it into a million pieces. Please take my thumbs up! Great video!
Fantastic content from someone who quite literally sits in his living room talking to himself.😂
indeed, imagine watching him from a corner while he fiolms himself lul xD
Literally every TH-cam content creator that talks in their videos we all sit in a room and talk to our self apart from the ones that are out and about of course.
i had one of these in the early 90s thanks for the trip down memory lane :)
I had one of these in the 90's. I was born in 1988, so I was a kid in the 90's and I quite enjoyed this "game." It was something older than me; I think my dad bought it from one of his co-workers at the time. It's not really a game; it's a pretend toy, and believe you me, there's a difference. Like a toy gun that came with different sound effects -- it's not a game in itself, it's a toy to play pretend, and you use your imagination to come up with all kinds of games for it. I played a lot of "pretend games" back then. Pretend teacher-student using a blackboard, pretend superhero (I had a Cyclops costume), pretend driving (using this), and so on. I never once thought any of it was rubbish, as I really did enjoy myself, as well as my younger siblings and my cousins.
And my love to you grew when u said u had a 8 series Bimmer
The joy usually comes from the fixing process because sometimes the finished product is a disappointment.
A noisy disappointment :D
Vince you have more patience than a Saint I took one look at the insides of that machine and just felt for you fixing it its the same with all fiddly old stuff no parts cogs rotted away Honestly it would have been in the bin after the first hour of fooling around with it such a commendable fix Good video as always keep up the good work a pleasure to watch someone else doing what I cannot
Another blast from the past, love these videos Vince!
Fell on this tube reparing a radio controled car (working now). But mate i got a HUGE kick from this tube. So geeky and fun. Ill be following your tube for sure.
I used to have one of those when I was younger lol 38 now but love this fix. It brings me back to my Rude Ralph from that same year.
53:09 OMG I died laughing at the horn O_O lol
lol
Well Done Vince. It's amazing the thought and workmanship that goes into the workings of such a simple game. Good to see you have the patience of a saint. Mick Northern Ireland
Thanks Mick :-)
You need to take photos
Think I would have got special hammer out lol
Damn you mentioned LED's at the end of the video. Its amazing how this and the pinball and the armatron all work of the one electric motor and no uC in sight!
Might be an idea to change the bulb for an LED then it would be future proof. Great fix :-)
When the video started, I had a bet with myself as to whether you'd spend your time A) chasing bad connections, B) undoing a bodged repair or C) fixing the damage an exasperated parent inflicted upon it 😀
Had flashbacks of Andy Pandy......feotal position........LOL well done again!
If you're going to continue to work on projects with gears like this, you may want to consider trying to cast your own. You can make a simple silicone mold of the old, broken gear and then cast the new with a 2 part resin.
Wow Vince that toy brings me way way back I use to have one as a kid mine was red in color on it I still injoy your vlogs keep up the great work 😊
I really doubt that you are really an amateur of repairing, Vince. If you are indeed, then, you must be a genius.
Awesome Vince congratulations on the repair
I remember my my brothers that were twins got this as a Christmas gift as a kid I was so jealous 😳😂 old-school gears ⚙️ slipping on the motor ... Love how you can take apart the old motors and recondition them but a pain to put back together without bending the leads .. awesome how the old-school lightbulbs are .. part two video of LED mod ? 😂 how do you work on the ground without legs bothering you ?😂🤣
One of the reasons we still love you tube
Lovely fix this one, too bad you couldn’t enjoy doing it as much as you would like. I was actually screaming at the screen a couple of times haha (contacts are for shifter, crossbarr is for tacho etc.)realy enjoyed it, Thanks Vince.
Haha, yes I completely forget about the tacho, got there eventually :-)
This reminded me of your Truckotronic fix :D Seriously though good job on that as when you opened it up and the gears went everywhere i thought thats the end of that then. Keep em coming
Man I havent't seen one of those in a long time brings back alot of memories. Now that I think of it I still have mine somewhere lol
Interesting toy, always wanted one as a kid but never got one. And of course I have to go to work now so gotta finish watching this video after I return to home. It's going to be a looong shift :D
Great job Vince! I know those bits are frustrating, but you did it well enough! I think some stuff was missing too! Either the person that took it apart didn't put them back in or it was for a version with more features. I bet that round hole with nothing in it was a motor that created a vibration when you went off the side of the road. It also looks like there should have been a speaker on the bottom and I thought it looked like there were wired for it, but I could be mistaken. I bet your kids would enjoy it!! Stuff to play with these days are more virtual! Being able to steer a wheel and shift is part of the fun!
Very true Jim, I did see the speaker hole. I wondered if it was for a different model or if it was to let the clicking sound out of the case when off the side of the road. Not sure.
I think the whole thing is a cheap copy of the Tomy one so maybe cost cutting took the speaker out of it and the non flashing indicator!!!!! Cheers for watching it and the comments :-)
@@Mymatevince You obviously need some blinker fluid! :) I wonder if the part you were playing with at 11:50 is only there to make that clicking sound, or there is a missing part (connector) which would be then used to break the circuit for indicators and make them flash? Clearly, indicators connection doesn't look right with that scotch tape  What's more, from what I can see, it's possible to connect that lightbulb to 3V, as the ignition key just connects negative side.
@@bartomiejgowala1167 You are correct, I didn't think to investigate the taped up contacts. I also didn't think that maybe the bulb was originally connected to the ignition key. Maybe that would make it brighter. Thanks for the tips :-)
As always Vince, your patience astounds me. Great repair! Those flimsy plastic gears are a pain in the A$$. I know your not interested in doing anything more with this toy (and I can't blame you), but for the sake of argument, maybe two white LED's on the screen would be brighter and simulate two headlights for more realism. I know LED"s have been mentioned here already but two LED's would be taking it a step further. An added benefit would be longer battery life. Replacing all the other lights (pop up headlights, green turn signals, etc.) with the proper color LED's would further increase the battery life. Those filament bulbs obviously use more current to create light when compared to LED's. You could also put your meter in series with the batteries and measure the current 'before' and 'after' the LED mod. It might make for an interesting and educational video someday if you're ever unsure about what to make a video about. Also remember that you'd also have to add a resistor in series to limit the current to each LED circuit. There are easy to use calculator's online to tell you what value resistors to use depending on the type of LED. Anyway sorry for all the rambling! Keep up the great work and as always looking forward to more videos!
Your Christmas list......3d printer and a reball rework station. I would LOVE to see you learn reballing and 3d printing. Making gears and little replacement bits and seeing unfixable BGA stuff get repaired would make for some amazing videos.
Hi Vince, I really can understand your thoghts that this one was a bit boring in fixing it and in seeing the end result. But, I had a similar toy back when I was 11 years old and it really was an exciting one for me. You know I am blind and having a physical steering wheel, a physical ignition key, a physical gear shifter, a quite nice car engine sound (mine mechanically reproduced a car engine sound by means of a little vibrating leaf spring connected to a rubber diafragm) and the clicking noise when I was no longer on the track was all really cool to me and you know, it was quite the only car game I was able to play. So, it really wasn't that boring to me seeing you fix one of these. It just brought back memories of me sitting at it and calling for my mother or dad to come and read the scores every time the fuel ran out. :-)
Well that is nice to hear. I can see how the fact that this toy is playable through feeling would be appealing, much more so than a computer game for example. Thanks for sharing your memories with this and I am glad you liked the fix :-)
Had one as a child loved it, never seen one since to now lol
2 my mate vince videos in 1 day, is this my lucky day or what!
It's funny to think that there is actually a skill element to it. With the track moving it can stall your progress as measured by the odometer- so it's incumbent on the user to keep to the 'live' part of the track (which of course moves from side to side) in order to progress as much as possible along before the fuel runs out- which in turn equates to the final score.
Never had you down as an ex 8-series owner!
Yeah, I bought a used 1996 840ci (V8) for 4K around 7 or 8 years ago but it needed a bit of work. It was a lovely dark blue colour with grey leather interior. It was the nicest one I have ever seen as it was just plain....no body kits/spoilers, lovely simple wheels which weren't low profile. It was as plain as a 8 series could be haha. I sold it after about a year, I loved it on the motorway but all my driving was town traffic and at the time my road had very little parking and that thing was long, deceivingly long. Also the rear seats were tiny so unfortunately it wasn't that practical. A very interesting car though and maybe one to watch in the future for price rises, especially the V12 version. The weight of it and the shape felt perfect for motorway driving and when you put your foot down at 50 it flew just like other cars from 0-30 :-)
omg i had a heart attack at 54mins when stopped working lol loved this video because it took me back to being a child (born 1983)
Great job, Vince. I could see this was a tricky one!
Congrats! And Vince, you have the patience of Job. I'd have been inventing new curses. :D
Just like Thomas Ran and his keyboards (cough, chyrosran22, cough), eh? 😜
Wow, childhood memories. I feel like I had the very same one. And I‘m pretty sure I opened it up as a five year old. lol
great video yet again lol. i would love to see you do a give away of one of your projects.
Interesting repair, but I can see why you got frustrated with it! Those gears are a pain! It was also another of those well engineered systems. LOL @ the horn!
Damn that was complicated, Imagine being the designer.
Hi vince the bulb says 8.9 or 8.8 volts looks like it's to high voltage try find one with a lower voltage rating and it will be brighter keep up the good work!
or use a led
Yea you can use led's but a normal bulb would suit it and keep it original there are plenty of bulbs on ebay you can use torch bulbs as well.
You could switch that lamp to a yellow led or something like that for a better sight!
Best regards and thank you for that video.
To tell the truth. I would have drop kicked this thing straight into the wheelie bin. You have the patience of a saint. 😇
Great vid as usual. you never dissapoint man !!!. The toy is nice, back in the 80s this things were top notch appart from LCD hanheld games. But something made me laugh so hard ... the moment you pushed the claxon and it sound like a dog squeaky toy. Hilarious.
Looks like a fun toy that wouldn't have annoyed the parents much. lol
Wow I was thinking about this old toy cool vid vince
childhood memories, nice fix again ;)
Your videos are amazing Vince.
Vince my mate, use an old computer power supply with stepdown boards from china to get power, better than the battery :)
The idea is good but ATX PSU can be a bit violent on short, specially on 5V and 3.3 rails. It takes way much current to trip the protection Dont ask me how I know that LOL
hey Vince, this is unrelated to this specific video but its something you should know, I noticed you apply to much thermal paste to things like the CPU, look up the pea method or other better methods to apply thermal paste, because the amount you are applying will cause the thermal paste to overflow the side and touch terminals and cause things to short out, or leave air pockets that will only insulate the heat, so I highly recommend looking up and using the pea method, its what I always use. Anyways keep up the great work, I love watching your videos!
You’re right about that, but I don’t think that the PS3s malfunctioned because of that.
It’s fairly evident on the third one, considering someone else (other than Vince) had tried to reflow the GPU.
In other words, it stopped working, its previous owner tried to reflow it, ultimately failed (the reflow is only a temporary solution in the unlikely event it fixes the issue) and sold it off.
Other than that, this technique you described is indeed optimal, as it ensures a uniform spreading with little to no airpockets (and AFAIK, airpockets tend to insulate heat, the exact opposite of the thermal paste’s purpose).
Operational 117 ohh, ok well the main point is thermal paste application is important lol because you don’t want run off or airpockets
Shambles1980TRealOne yes it is true to much is better than to little, and I saw that video, however although nexus didn’t have any trouble, that doesn’t mean that overflow will not increase the likelihood of short circuiting something, because it does raise that chance by quite a lot, so it’s just plain recommended to apply thermal paste the proper way.
Shambles1980TRealOne by using the term “proper way” I refer to the use of correct thermal paste application, and the definition of that is simply to make sure you have the correct amount of thermal paste, that way you don’t have to little, or to much, and yes there are some methods like spreading it with your finger, that are worse than others, spreading it can cause air pockets to form that will then insulate heat.
“The Durango ‘95 purred away a real horrowshow-a nice, warm vibraty feeling all through your guttiwuts. And soon it was trees and dark, my brothers, with real country dark.”
Sounds like Vince is starting to get some burnout doing repairs, I mean its hard to keep up this pace trying to make repair videos all the time. My prediction is he will start to avoid certain things because of the frustration it takes to repair.
You really should do a live stream fix video
Retro Mastercomp That would be pretty difficult. Vince sometimes does these videos over a number of days. Plus he wouldn’t be able to speed up the video at times when it’s needed. Maybe something that’s an easy fix but as we’ve seen, surprises pop up with these fix videos.
I just realised that you're on the floor doing this. The time you spent, your back and knees must be wrecked!
are mate Vince strikes again nice job
Great video.
As I remember these, you could "crash" by hitting other cars. That's detected mechanically. And then it will cut power to the motor, but leave the lights on, possibly even flashing them. I know this is advice after the fact, but y'know, I feel interactive. The aim being, I think, to get the greatest distance logged on the odometer before you crash. So it is, technically, a game, with an aim and a lose condition and a score.
Absolutely fascinating.Cant say the same for the fuel consumption though.Full to empty in what..2 minutes?
The things that kept us happy. Give one of these to a kid now and it would bounce off your forehead a few seconds later.
Instead of watch oil, may I suggest using something designed specifically for motors that spin at high speeds, in this case, sewing machine oil. It's pretty cheap stuff, I use it on all my computer fans when they start to make a noise, you get quite a few years longer out of the fans too :)
Picked up a bottle from my local sewing machine shop the other week, 8AUD for a 300mL bottle that'll last me for the next decade.
Considering the age of the toy, would it not be possible that all the bulbs in the toy are the exact same? for the light on the road, maybe they are the same as the headlights, and the indicators. Maybe swap them around to see if that improves visibility on the road, I just cant see a manufacturer of a toy using many different bulbs.
Flashing indicators just takes a relay that you turn on and off, could easily be done without a chip of any kind, cars have been doing it since long before chips were created :) Interestingly enough, that relay is also what causes the indicators to make their noise.
So satisfying 😂
Any way, that you could safely tidy the wires up.??
Cool, I had one of those in 1997, it was a police car version.
You could put a LED in it. Its not original but would be brighter
My little lad was watching this with us and he now wants one 🤦🏼♀️
Cannot find it on eBay
The original was made by tommy.. they are a collector's item now so they can be very pricey and very hard to find!
You really should buy yourself a workbench power supply. oh and a workbench to go with it. lol
Fun toy (and very noisy). Put an old tablet (with OTG) inside, add some extra switches and read all controls with an arduino or buy a USB HID game controller kit and design the basic game with real gear sounds. Could be fun however it looks easier than really is ;-)
"How the insides work", complete guess at the beginning, but it's a belt with graphics on it, rolling down.
great video
42:47 - “So it’s like one step forward and two steps back...”
Sounds alot like many triple-A game publishers nowadays... _lookin’ particularily at YOU, EA Games!_ 😠
5 months later, Battlefield V STILL isn't a complete game...
Damn I had one of these many years ago!!!
8 remember that I had a red one
Wonder way they made a left turn signal on this toy. Just keep the right one on the whole time. :)
yay new video
Did this remind you of fixing the Truckotronic by any chance? :)
Classic using a steak knife to open the motor 👍🌿
I think it’s a tomy Vince .the version I had was the same but mine had a Porsche 911 front end in red.circa about 1985 ?
Hi, question: you have mixed sodium with super glue, is that it?
Hi, yes it is supposed to set rock hard. A lot of people have mentioned it in other videos :-)
@@Mymatevince Never heard about it, might try one day thanks for sharing
I would have just parted this thing for the motor and light and some switches. These things were so poorly made and a lot of stuff broke down.
My brother had the space turbo which is similar to this but you're driving a spaceship and you have to shoot the robots.
I am impressed i think i would of given up.
Looks like road to hell just as starting of film ghost rider😂🤣🤣🤘
I had similar thing when i was kid just less advanced. But for me that was a big thing, maybe i can't see this but there should be cars on the road, and your mission is avoid them... on this toy is just empty road i think🤔
Hi, there is a couple of cars on the road but it makes no difference in the game if you go through them or dodge them. The bulb is so dim that is hard to see them in the video :-)
Haha, had a similar problem with a 70s Fiat van gear box.
I had one of these in 1997 i believe it was red and black old toy for sure
For putting the gears in, it's a shame there isn't a special kind of glue. Where it would be utterly impregnable, completely sticky, and resist movement in the up-down direction. But in the sideways direction, or twisting, it would give completely. And then either die out from then on, disappear into nothing, or else continue on, with no resistance at all sideways, but completely in the perpendicular.
But such a thing doesn't exist! I dunno how you'd even apply it anyway, layers perhaps? So it'd know which direction was which? Or let it set in one orientation and let gravity teach it it's way up? I dunno, I doubt it's possible. It's the sort of nanoengineering MEMS stuff but done in the context of chemistry, all splatted together floating in a paste. You'd probably have to have actual nanomachines in there doing the work, not cheap or reliable, and when I say "not", imagine that in 50-metre letters.
Maybe chemistry could provide, sometimes it gets really clever.
I suppose til then there's just jigs and clever usage of a vice and some Helping Hands. Ah well, consider this my patent application. I think they have to have an actual suggestion on how to solve the problem, though. Shit.
I remember a friend bringing smth like this to school (i thing it was his birthday and we were allowed to bring smth on thise days)... and i also remember hating it since you couldn't see sh*t... Even those ~29 years ago it pissed me off - i hated these kinda toys with poor lighting (and we weren't rich so it's not like i was swimming it toys).
Hey man can I ask you a question about my Samsung tv settings ?
Yes
What about the horn Vince?
Cool
Wow! people use GLUE as a substitute to solder, amazing.
