      That's great to hear, I was thinking for small change one would swap out those screws to SS, not sure why they didn't sue SS in the first place. Love when companies listen. Great review as always, would love an in depth review comparing all the companies including Promediagear to RRS, Gitzo, FLM, etc. I'm sure there's slight size difference and details.

    Thanks for a stellar review, Nick. The screws are an issue, and I must admit, not considering those who shoot in salty conditions was likely an oversight by the designers. But I'd like everyone to know that I'm already addressing the issue with the factory. We always deal with problems and corrections immediately, and we can re-design minor things such as this on-the-fly.
    You can expect that every new CP34 (yes, there's a smaller version) or CP38 tripod we make from now on will have stainless steel screws at the apex. And anyone who has already bought one of these tripods will have a free retrofit, if they want it. I'll also find out why the leg angle locks caused a problem for you.
    These three screws hold the 100mm platform in place, but when you use a half-ball, they're removed, along with the platform, in order to use the built-in 100mm bowl.
    I'll be checking in here to see if anyone has other concerns or comments.
    Thank you again, Nick, and thanks to all of you here for commenting and asking questions.

    Nick, I totally admire what you are doing these days. Free and honest reviews are the 1st thing I look for in product reviews. I for 1 congratulate you for washing your hands from financial gain when doing these videos mate. I love the tripod very much but again sadly, it is too expensive for me as a hobbyist. I just got myself the a9 with the 200-600 G and have just ordered the Yelangu swivel mount from H&B. It hurts my pocket but it is my passion and that is all I have to enjoy. Keep up the good work mate and I wish you all the best in the future. Love your stories you share which inspire me even more.

    I have never heard of FLM, but good to know...cool that they changed the foot accessories, as unscrewing the feet is good for drainage and drying out the tripod after use in water. I like that the twist locks are metal, my rubber coated twist locks have separated from the metal, ripped, and fallen off. At some point the shims in the tripod have to be replaced as they crack, and that is the true testament of customer service, if they provide replacement shims at a reasonable price

    Very good review. I too would be dissappointed in the corrosive prone hardware. On a related note; you reviewed the Feisol Elite tripod a couple of years ago (maybe longer) and your only complaint seemed to be about the lack of a standand size thread at the bottom to install spikes other than ones supplied by Feisol. I purchased that tripod, before I found your review, and found the Feisol spikes to be a total dissappointment. Not being easily defeated, I have arrived at a solution to that problem and can now attach any spike with 3/8" threads to my tripod. I will gladly share the procedure with anyone who has a Feisol Elite and would like to install spikes or claws to the bottom.

    Nick, thanks for the review. Glad to see FLM is still working it and competing...the more the merrier! I have the FLM CP-26 which I love for hiking. I use it most of the time since the RRS TVC-34L is, as you might say, a beast. I've had one problem with it: The plastic sleeves atop each leg segment are fragile and tend to break. When that happens, the legs freeze up. I've gradually figured out how to live with these failed items, but wonder if you have experienced similar problems and what FLM has done to overcome them. Thanks much. Gerry

    Mr. Page... Your review skills show a marked improvement. This is the first set of legs I've seen yet that come close to my PMG ( ProMediaGear ) legs. Once they get the SS machine screw issue worked out, they'll be fine. What would have made these 38 mm legs close to perfect would be to incorporate the spikes into the foot pads. Take a look at the PMG website on this. I don't use my spikes that often either, but it is real nice knowing they are always there if/when I need them. My (4) section CF legs are 42 mm at 58" in height & come with (11) 1/4" females in the head as well as the metal slider clamps. FLM has made a very fine tripod here & I wish them success moving forward.

Does not appear to be a FLM reseller here in Australia. Now that you have dropped sponsors I am guessing you might be trying to figure how to prefect the public announcement. Keeping it short in audio might save the regulars from getting sick of hearing it ....... and send new viewers to a longer explanation in the comments? Anyway liked the review and the move away from sponsorship. Thanks.

    I'm using a cheap Zomei Tripod (~120€) for 5 years now and it still works like it did on the first day. I just had to retighten some screws. I travelled alot with it also went through seawater. All I had to do was to remove some salt. No corrosion no gummyness whatsoever. It's sturdy enough longtime exposures in windy conditions never bothered it.
    So spending 1k on a tripod (even though it probably is worth it) seems a bit odd to me.

    I'm shooting a lot of seascapes. Switched from a very mediocre Vanguard to the waterpoof Sirui W2204 - it actually does work as expected and only requires rinsing in a warm water with soap (I'm not affiliated with Sirui in any way). It's also much cheaper than the FLM. But FLM looks like a more solid option as far as I can see, less fragile.

    The Feisol competitor to this type of tripod seems to be getting great feedback too, from my friends who have owned it for years, and others I've met who have abused them for years. As a professional boat capt/marine photographer I have to deal with salt water induced corrosion on a daily basis so I feel your pain. Happily there's an easy solution. Go to any marine supply store and ask them for some anti corrosion spray. I use stiff sold by Mercury Outboard company but CRC and others make similar sprays. It forms a waxy coating that protects the metal very effectively. Not a very attractive look but the fastenings you are protecting ate only visible to gophers and woodchucks so that shouldn't be a problem.

    Looks interesting, especially at that price point. I use a RRS 34L and BH-55 head for my 6x17 camera and Mamiya RZ67 and haven't been let down, but the $500 difference in price does catch one's eye. Looking at both, it would appear the apex on the FLM is an aluminum casting? I believe RRS only uses forged aluminum in all their fittings, which is a big advantage. Do you know if this is true about the FLM model? Thanks for the excellent review...great info and right to the point (unlike those paid-off fanboys pushing the Peak Design travel pod).

    • @FLMUSACanada
      @FLMUSACanada 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @NickPage
      @NickPage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am familiar with Leofoto, and man I cant get on board with them simply because they are one of those "copycat" brands. Everything they make is just a ripoff of other company's designs, mostly Really right stuff. They dont even bother to change the numbering in the names. They are crazy cheap, but I fear in those cases, your getting what you pay for.

    • @AustralianImage
      @AustralianImage 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NickPage I think most product features are copied by one manufacturer or another to some extent nowadays, that's just the way of the world. I don't think RRS (I own at least one of their products) are completely immune from doing this, even if it involves refining the details.
      That said, the Leofoto I have is without any doubt a very well build tripod and I have no fear that it's going to fall apart any time soon. While the Chinese get a lot of flak (sometimes deservedly) in many cases they have upped their game and produce some of the world's best products. Think drones, gimbals etc, and these are complex devices.
      You also have to remember that outside of the US, RRS and many other products made in the US or Canada, cost and arm and a leg. It's not just the exchange rate but the tax and shipping costs can double the price of their products. I'm assuming that your viewers can come from outside the US.
      Just to add, I had a look at what I think is the equivalent RRS tripod , the Versa Tripod Series 4, to the Leofoto LN-404C and the differences are far greater than the similarities, when you look at the construction and features. The Leofoto is actually made to be compatible with Gitzo video tripods, rather than RRS.

    This is the sequel to the FLM Berlin 38.4? I have the Berlin, and it's beefy as hell, but it definitely isn't as tall as this 38L mk II, which makes me think it's not directly comparable.

    • @FLMUSACanada
      @FLMUSACanada 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Berlin had a very large-diameter apex, the new CP38-L4 II is much more streamlined. Both tripods use 38mm tubes and 4-section legs, but the CP38 is taller by ~13 inches. As Nick pointed out the feet have been revised, as was the carbon tube weaving. A big change is also in how the flat plate on top of the tripod is secured. The Berlin used a small set screw at the side of the rounder apex, while the new CP38 (and CP34, too) use three screws (soon to be stainless steel) to fix the platform in place. Really solid, as are the leg angle locks, which are revised and improved on the new tripod. I actually heard a lot of Nick's criticisms on the Berlin, they were valid, and we revised just about every one of his peeves with the previous tripod. The other upgrades are from the factory. Thanks for writing in, and glad you still enjoy the Berlin, too!

    FLM makes awesome stuff. They have some seriously well engineered heads with some unique features not seen on others.
    This looks like an amazing tripod but it’s inexcusable why they would cheap out and not use stainless for those bottom screws and the smaller, the worse because they can become an impossible thing to remove.
    I love the idea of the metal twist locks. That screams ultra premium.
    If not for that screw oxidation, it’s an amazing tripod and a great price.
    Also, as for size, it matters. I’m 6 feet but that’s not too much a concern. Out in Kauai with nick near a double water fall, my tripod was simply not tall enough to “see” over the edge of this one composition. Nick said “Here use mine...” and I snapped my camera in and boom - got the shot I wanted and could not get otherwise. Size does matter.
