  • Disney has confirmed they're making changes to their Disability Access System. This, in an effort to limit or prevent guests from abusing or mis-using the system. The changes may or may not work, but today we'll get into not just what those fixes are, but also why the problem may be worse than they're letting on, how it began, and if maybe Disney is fixing the wrong problem.

      @@calebhoward8940 I can't go so far as to be so melodramatic as to say that they "ruined the parks." But I don't disagree that Chapek-era changes have turned the experience of going into something often more grueling than flat-out enjoyable. If Disney doesn't get its head on straight when it comes to guest experience, the ongoing bad PR is really going to take a toll. Hell, it's taking a toll NOW. Being a SoCal resident and long-time Disney parks fan, I now second-guess any thoughts of going, and that never used to be the case.

      @@crytsanana3592 They don't ask for documentation because that would be a lawyers dream and they would get sued. The reality is they cannot stop it because anyone can lie. The reality is they made a mistake when they started they decided autism was a valid reason for DAS. If they stuck with the original system where it was only used for guest with mobility problems it was much easier to police.
      Frankly I don't understand why anyone with a kid with autism that was so extreme they couldn't stand in a line without having a breakdown would be taken to Disneyland... It reminds me of the moronic parent that took their kid to see a Dora the Explorer live show when the kid was so far gone he started freaking out and screaming non-stop as soon as the show started. As someone who requests DAS under my physical issues, I do not feel comfortable outing myself otherwise. Especially after speaking to a CM tonight, who while wonderful, had zero medical training or understanding. The CM asked why I don’t purchase a walker to use while in the parks- that’s what the collapsible cane is for. I have multiple physical issues that aren’t readily apparent.
      I have never used other issues I have because, again, I do not feel comfortable outing myself. I can imagine that there are plenty of others who feel similar.
      If there is no training, does that mean that they will move to a functional/nonfunctional sliding scale that is up to a CM that may not understand the nuances of neurodivergence and disabilities?

    Instead of accusing these new DAS users of being people looking for a loophole, Disney should also recognize that their previous FastPass system was also another free accommodation for people with disabilities.
    The increase in DAS users correlates with the termination of the FastPass system because more people with disabilities were able to access the park/rides without asking for specific accommodations from DAS. Now that FastPass is gone, some of those people are seeking DAS assistance.

    • @tjtennisicmroll2k
      @tjtennisicmroll2k 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Disability has a very specific legal definition and so does reasonable accommodation. There is no such thing as a free accommodation legally, only reasonable accommodations under the ADA, which Disney can choose what kind of reasonable accommodation to provide, but they only have to provide one if someone requests it and provides the proper documentation showing that the person an a disability which affects a major life activity and what that disability prevents them from doing. Only then, can Disney know what options it has to allow that person to use the facilities. People don't have a right to choose their reasonable accommodation, they have to accept or reject the one that is offered to them.

      The previous fast pass was also superior to this rip off version.
      I paid for the last one as part of the max pass, and I could fast pass the same ride more than once in one day, but now I can only use it once for each ride per day but still pay the same price. It's basically a rip off

      If Disney would just allow genie+ as a magic key add-on for a flat fee for the whole year, I’d just pay for that instead of messing with DAS. But there’s no way I feel that $60/day for my wife and I to get on rides is reasonable.

You are also incorrect about choosing accommodations. You can't turn a disabled person away just because you don't want to provide that particular accommodation. It has to be a HARDSHIP to the company to provide for ANY requested accommodation. That means the requested accommodation would (In Disney's case) have to be hugely expensive or completely change operations. You really need to quit while you are behind.

    This is a moral and ethics issue. Cheaters are going to cheat which will always make it harder on the ones who need the help and for those of us who play by the rules. People who feel entitled because you are now paying an additional fee for something you "used to get for free" are also the problem. Times change. Businesses change. If you don't like those changes, you don't go. When I took my young children and grandchildren to the Parks, they didn't want to wait in the lines either. My grandmother could only ride a couple of rides a day because of long queues. This is what it is. Everyone knows the situation going in. People who need REAL assistance SHOULD be assisted. Anyone who thinks that it is ok to try and cheat the system, YOU are the problem and nothing can ever be fixed with condoning such actions.

    I believe it is important to address the DAS system as it can be abused by many if they so choose. One interesting comment is that on your last video on Knotts of Fast Lane is it needed or is the $100 worth it. The clear answer was yes with how long the wait times were. Especially if you were trying to get onto rides. When is come to Disney, if you are wanting to get on rides, Genie + is a definite must these days. But one thing that should change is the ratio of Standby (More) guests to Genie+, DAS, VIP or any other skip the line. This would greatly improve the Standby Guest experience. As a user of Genie+, waiting 10 to 20 minutes in a Lightning Lane Line is OK. They should also raise the price of Genie+, they get the same revenue, fewer buyers, thus standby moves faster as well. We will see how this all works out in the end.

However we had a party of 5 people, mom/dad, 2 kiddos, and grandma. So Genie+ was a little steep price point. I'm happy to say our son did great and the longest line we waited in was maybe 40-45 minutes. Maybe the problem is with the interview process, maybe the restrictions should be more strict. If Disney gave the DAS pass to someone then they should accept the responsibility for handing out the pass. Maybe they're too relaxed on whom receives it. Genie + only goes so far though. the limit - simple hypothetical version - you got a ride that you know can load 100 people in 10 mins. So you know your queue of 500 people will take 50 minutes. you got 500 people standing there, straightforward. But put in a fast pass system, offer 50 fast passes for every 10 mins. 50 people from standby and 50 people walking in with passes get on the ride every 10 minutes. You can tell your standby people how long they're waiting if you know half the places are going to passes.
      That's with a set limit, half the places are available to passes every 10 mins. If you take away that limit, and anyone who buys a pass can get on the ride ahead of the standby line, they might be waiting hours for a gap in the traffic to get on the ride!
      Lightning Lane is obviously a lot more complicated than that, it does have a limit, it can sell out, but it doesn't seem like it's anywhere near is balanced and regulated as the older systems were.

    • @mattyg4186

      @@ItsameBS so it’s my belief they would limit how many guests could get a fastpass for a said hour when a limit was hit they go to the next hour and so on, so example when Toy Story Mania was brand new by 8 pm they were completely sold out of fast passes on the original fastpass system because throughout the day people got fast passes each hour, so if it a lot of people used it they wouldn’t tell you come back in an hour it could tell you come back 2 hrs later 3 hrs later and so on. I believe they used to have a limit of how many people could get a fastpass each hour. With lightning lane since people are paying for it there’s no limit and now both the standby and lighting lanes lines are well over an hour, Disney doesn’t care because people are paying for it.

Patient who sometimes blood pressure blood sugar drops or increases, depending on how my system is acting and I’ve gone the past before. I wonder if taking my disability information for my handicap placard on the car Would help. The other thing is there’s going to be somebody who sees I’m sure because a disability really isn’t always visible and if a member says no you’re not disabled that’s gonna cause an issues but at the same time they can’t actually ask you what issues you have because I goes beyond the HIPAA agreement. I’ve been told that they would suggest a wheelchair, but the thing is, it’s not always for me, and since I am a magic key holder, I don’t have to ride every single ride. Hi, David. Hey, we have been using DAS for many, many years. We're annual pass holders and our son is in a wheelchair. He has all sorts of conditions that limit him to being in a long line. One of them is autism. If he's in a long line, he will pull some one's hair or kick the person in front of us or on the side. To this day I feel like I have to explain everything that's wrong with him to the guest member in order for him to get a SAS Even though he's completely in a wheelchair, I guess I should just say he needs the ride to be stopped and that might solve it all😅 very frustrated with people Abusing the system, but I get It Disneyland is expensive. I think Covid needs to be a part of these discussions, if we're going to look at the problem fairly. Millions of people were left with chronic medical concerns, so it's natural that there was some level of increase in DAS users.
    There is absolutely widespread abuse of the DAS program, especially here at WDW, but I think we need to be very cautious about suggested changes that punish disabled people for the actions of non-disabled people. Adding additional burdens to the people who generally have access to the least resources is a choice society needs to stop making so enthusiastically.
    You said it -- Disney needs to work on the actual problem. Why are the lines so long? Why aren't they more comfortable to wait in? Why aren't they doing anything to entertain people in those lines? Instead of putting in the work, Disney wants to shift the burden to disabled people. An estimated 25% of the population is disabled. As medical science continues to improve, we're going to see more disabled people, not less, because people will be living longer, and surviving more diseases and injuries. Society, including public businesses, needs to start figuring out how to deal with it.

And when you finally understand what youre dealing with of course you are going to want to accomodate yourself as anyone should be able to . I dont think theres absolutely no one who would intend on abusing it , and i also think there are more people who need more accomodations than we think sometimes. My best friend for example can practically barely go on the haunted mansion / the queue in space mountain / watch fireworks because of her claustrophobia. Being distressed multiple times a day isnt fun even if youre able to get through it . Just another perspective .

      I also hate being crammed in those lines, I get very irritated when the people behind me don't give me space, or their kid is crying. But, I don't think I legally qualify under the ADA as being disabled, because my feelings don't prevent me from performing daily activities. For it to be a disability under the ADA, it has to be something that effects a major life activity. For example, if your friend cannot hold a job or cannot feed herself because of her condition, then that is a disability and if her disability prevents her from standing in a line for more than 10 minutes according to a doctor, then that is something that Disney is required to grant a reasonable accommodation for. It can be whatever reasonable accommodation they want, but it has to allow a person with a disability to use the facility that they provide.

    Just bring back the free fast pass system. It would remove the incentive to abuse the DAS system. If Disney still wants more revenue, then add the ability to buy individual lightning lanes to each ride. That would limit the number of lightning lane users and possibly increase revenue. The original purpose of the free fast pass was to allow guests to spend more time buying stuff and food vs waiting in line. You get better guest satisfaction and more revenue. Paying for fast passes defeats this purpose if there is no limit on the number of genie plus sold. The only other way is to do what Universal does and have Genie plus at a very high price and remove the time reservations for the system.

    Yes there is abuse and it has hurt everyone in the DAS community so much. The lines are so long where we have to step out of line just to keep her moving because they are filled with groups of people not on the genie pass not rightfully there in line.
    But for those whom really need it like my family of 3, we rarely have an extra family member join us because we do not want to abuse it. It is so upsetting to see 15-20 people faking or bringing grandma in a wheelchair 6 is the limit. If your in a scooter you are not mentally disable just to bring 14 -20 people in the lighting lane. You can wait in line. You make life miserable for those of us trying to keep our das pass user cool so they don't have a seizure or clean their tube. We could not enjoy the park at all with out this pass. The problem is monumentally huge! We feel blessed to have this pass and even get 2 or 3 rides in a day before our daughter is wiped out is a milestone.
    My daughter has down syndrome, serve autism, non- verable, seizures, and OCD. We have to keep her moving in a wheelchair because she is claustrophobic we I learned this the hard way with a physical meltdown with a punch in the eye from my daughter with a toy while inline for Peter pan. So we stopped going for a while till we learned about the DAS pass we went back with a doctor's note explaining her disabilities that was made in person they saw her and agreed yes she needed the pass. This ritual would happen every time we went back to Disneyland to receive this paper pass stating what our needs were that was like 20 years ago. But we would do this for our precious daughter. I would give anything to not have to use this pass and have a regular normal visit like everybody else. But because of this pass we have been blessed to see so many miracles within the parks with our daughter her inactions with cast members and even other guest is amazing. But because she is nonverbal there are two places that people talk to her and that’s Disneyland and our church. The joy she receives from going to Disneyland is priceless a place where she can forget about her constant jaw and cranial pain. Even though she is 31 she is mentally at around 4-6 years old. We could not enjoy the park at all with out that pass and the joy would be gone. Please people stop abusing this program and pay for the genie pass. Sincerely please for all those whom can not speak up for themselves like my non-verbal daughter please be kind and considerate. Thank you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Under this new proposal for a DAS pass my Handicapped Granddaughter who was born with Cereabal Palsey who has in a wheelchair, cannot stand, walk or be out in the sun for long periods of time due to her condition will be punished and will NOT qualify for a DAS pass. Disney also wants to hire a independent company who are NOT doctors to determine if a person qualifies or not. There are also certain attractions that if you are in a wheelchair you cannot go through the regular standby Queue and need to use a different entrance and need the DAS pass. I have been getting her a DAS pass since 2010 and Disney has made it more difficult every year to get her one. We DON'T use it for all attractions if possible, only the ones where we need to use a different handicapped entrance like Small World, Thunder Mountain, etc. The other problem that needs to be addressed is how many people can be listed on a DAS pass and Limit it to five.

    What people need to understand is that Disney isn't saying f u to people with disabilities. They are saying that they have ways to accommodate disabilities without abusing the system. A person with a disability that makes it hard for them to walk long distances can rent a wheelchair. That person would sit most of the day anyways, so why is it any different sitting in a line and being pushed? And for those that will say that not all lines accommodate wheelchairs, that's when they give a das pass for that specific ride for a return time. My friend can't walk and wears a neck brace and is a Dr who could write himself a note to get out of it, but he doesn't complain. We rent a wheelchair and wait in line. Disney is a choice, not a right, but everyone acts like Disney should just bend over backward. If you don't like it, don't go or go somewhere else. It's like driving a car, you can choose to follow the rules or if you break them you can have your license taken away or lose your life, etc. There are rules everywhere in life, not just here. And some of those rules, we HAVE to follow or face a consequence, that is our choice.... like taxes.

      They can't. Some of the lines are accessible, and they have had wheelchair users go through those for years. But if the line is not accessible, they have to accommodate them. Even if the person can walk, they may not be able to stand for long periods. So until they update the inaccessible lines, they will have to accommodate them like they are now.

    Disney is GREEDY! The lines are too long for the rides (standby and Lightning). Disney needs to determine their PROFIT MARGIN with daily number of guests, and CLOSE THE PARK when this number is reached. (They won’t, they’re greedy). If the park can handle 90,000 daily guests, but is profitable at 80,000 guests, limit capacity to 80,000 a day. (again, they won’t). This would reduce ride wait time. Also, Disneyland Forward hopefully will pass, to build MORE attractions, and create MORE walkable land……but don’t raise capacity to 110,000 a day!!!

    I see people complaining about the 4 limit. But if being used correctly and the party is given a return time. The people in the group without the special accommodation need could get into line and end up on the ride and off it relatively at the same time as the people with the return time.

    • @tjtennisicmroll2k
      @tjtennisicmroll2k 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes, good point, but then the people paying for the lightning lane would have additional people in line in front of them if they happened to use it right after the DAS group arrived. Worse case 50 people use DAS get a return time, you pay 30 bucks for the genie and then have to wait an extra 20 minutes even though you paid to skip the line. seems like they should just let DAS go to the front of the standby line and still give fast pass priority, but that is also impossible

      The problem here is the queue times are not guaranteed in the regular lines. I’ve been in Space Mountain’s queue where the wait times in the line were over 30 minutes longer than what was previously quoted. This also makes it less likely for guests to want to visit the parks if they cannot have the whole family together to enjoy the experience as a single unit.

    The core issue here really is the ridiculous lines at Disney and well really just money. They have every ability and clearly the technology needed to keep everyone out of the queue if they wanted. They wont do this, because long lines deter usage and this allows them to pack their park with far greater attendance than they should be allowed to. Whether it is possible or not, every person that pays for a ticket "expects" that they will be able to ride every single ride in the park. They believe "this" is what they are paying for, when in fact they are just paying for the "chance" to ride every single ride. The difference here is being slightly exploited by Disney. They have they technology to schedule rides on every single ride (this "is" DAS as it exists). They experience is significantly better with DAS than without. If you could buy DAS how much would you pay? I would easily pay twice the cost of current Genie+ for the "privilege". This also just highlights that at the core this isn't a "cheating" issue its a "money" issue.

    • @agentmaine8126
      @agentmaine8126 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Another issue is how bad of a rip off Genie Plus fast lane is.
      Once you use it on a ride your unable to use it on that same ride for the rest of the day,
      They act like people don't like to re ride the same.rides in one day.
      The previous system would allow this and was roughly the same price, so now they Decreased the value but maintained the same price

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@agentmaine8126 I have a lot of issues with the Genie+. It's just too complicated and unless you're absolutely set on running your entire day around the Genie+ wait times, you can wind up getting very little for your money. As expensive as the Universal equivalent is, you know what you're getting. You will get to use it on every covered ride and attraction and the only way to not to get to use it, is if you leave it until too close to closing time to sit through the much shorter waits.
      But, really, Disney should just bring back fastpasses, give everybody that comes some limited number of them per day and it would take a lot of pressure off the DAS and Genie+ to accommodate too many people. They can probably still charge for Genie+, it might just come in the form of additional fastpasses at a time, or having a set number that are set aside until the last minute.

I experienced DAS for the first time last summer when traveling with my niece with Down Syndrome, and her dad, who has a traumatic brain injury.
