  • This presentation was delivered at the Grains Research & Development Corporation - Grains Research Update held in Perth 26-27 February 2024 and gives an overview of the project closing the Economic Yield Gap of Grain Legumes in WA. It highlights our collaboration with 13 grower groups from Yuna to Esperance to address agronomic issues limiting grain legume adoption. Through surveys, we identified key challenges such as poor commodity prices, variable yields, and market access.
    First-Year Trials
Learn about our first-year trials, including:
    - New crop type evaluations
    - Sowing time impacts on yields and disease
    - New acid-tolerant rhizobia effects
    - Improved fertiliser and herbicide strategies
    - Low rainfall options like brown manuring
    - We also discuss the economic impact of these treatments.
    Peer-to-Peer Learning Program
Our peer-to-peer learning program, the Legume Leader campaign, features successful growers who integrate grain legumes into their systems. These growers host trials and share their experiences.
    Special Guests
    - Jason Batten from Yuna Farm Improvement Group discusses nitrogen carryover from lupin and vetch treatments.
    - Ed Naisbitt from Lakes Information Farming Technology (LIFT) shares best practices for narrow leaf lupins.
With a combined 70 years of farming experience between them, Jason and Ed are just two of the eight 'Legume Leaders' that advocate for legumes in a farming system. Browse the entire 'Legumes Leaders' gallery in the WA Grain Legumes project here: airtable.com/a...
