“Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks” is a line that always chokes me up. I find it so relatable not just because I’ve never been allowed to break down and cry no matter what was happening but also because my sister was always so patient with me and felt she couldn’t express her pain because of mine. (Just to clarify our parents are very great and supportive but we both suffered through abusive teachers and authority figures)
@@z4gee12 I think he should but he should post his reaction to the songs from his movie reactions so he has context but it’s also A blind one Am I making sense😂😅
I'm of African descent and a first born and, having met and discussed generational trauma/pressure put on us by family members with people from Hispanic and Asian descent, our childhoods were scarily similar. It was like we shared the subsection of a Venn diagram
It’s just crazy too because some parents don’t even realize it. The other day I was telling my sister I related to Isabella in this movie and my mom overheard and said “I don’t know how but OK".
My mom and dad had different reactions to the film. Mom did understand what it ment and she tries to avoid talking about the film in a deeper meaning. But at least she isn't afraid to talk about Luisa and understands why I relate. She was also parentified as a child. As for my dad, he proposally missed the messaged of Luisas song. Even after my brother pointed all the attention to me by saying Luisa is the OLDER sister of Mirabel. Lin based Luisa off of his OLDER sister. Baiscally trying to put his attention to the fact that I'm the oldest sister. He said "So she saved the Titanic?" at the end of the song. He thought the song was about Luisa being a super hero and saving people with her power. I'm 100% sure he understood and he's just acting. At the end of the film, he understood the message and spoke deeply about it. But he still claims the movie as witchcraft so........... 50/50 for him.
She tends to minimize her problems. The “Give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would’ve pulled you under” line makes me wonder if she knows she’s minimizing it. Like, yeah these problems are big and scary and out of my control, but if I tell myself it’s not that bad then I can handle it a little better; but that doesn’t cancel out the reality that she’s carrying the world on her shoulders
As a daughter from an Asian household with a lot of Spanish influence, pressure, especially when it's from your family, is on a very different level. This song made me cry the first time that I heard it because it's just sooooo real. PS. In case you're wondering what Asian country has a lot of Spanish influence, it's the Philippines.
pressure from your parents in colombia?? yep way too real, actually, pressure from your parents for all latinos in latam I even dare to say is pretty common in hispanic households Like, walking out of the house just because you are over 18 and wanna have a life of your own? hell no
This is hands down my favorite song from the movie. I can't stop listening to it, seriously! My favorite lyrics are: Give it to your sister and never wonder If the same pressure would've pulled you under That cut deep
I'm not Colombian, but I am from Honduras. In Latam, parents encourage and maybe even pressure their children to be better and more successful than themselves. Three generations back, it wasn't uncommon for people to only have primary level education. Two generations back, most people stuck to high school ed. With our parents, college level education was a must. Now, a lot of us feel pressured to keep the self-improvement cycle going. It's pretty common for parents to say, "I worked hard so you could have a better life than myself", to their children. That sticks with us, and the second we feel like we're not making the most out of what our parents gave us through their own hard work and effort, a lot of use might end up feeling worthless or lost. That's why Encanto, a movie celebrating latino culture is about generational trauma. Our grandparents and parents mean well, but that doesn't mean that we don't feel the pressure that Luisa, Mirabel, or even Isabela feel. We all tend to have a natural instilled fear of not living up to expectations or being enough
i was thinking on how to comment about this pressure they put on us but your comment explained it best! I'm from Colombia but I think this can be easily seen in any family from Latinamerica. In most cases, our parents made enormous efforts so we can have a better life and succeed. However, since our countries are in development and the risk of falling into poverty or being at a civil war is greater, they also fear for our safety and survival when they stop being around, so while pushing us far from those situations they put a lot of pressure on us. I also think that such fear comes from their own experiences of what they have seen, heard or lived, and in some cases it's almost like they get really scared for their children to live those same things and put high expectations on us to avoid such scenarios.
Not really, it's VARY GOOD, and fairly popular, it's just that it's a bit beneath WDTAB because a little more people prefer that over surface pressure(me too). it's just that one has most characters sing, it's about BRUNO, and it has CAMILO, the best character in the movie
@@aleedle_leee kinda, yeah, I would say it's 2nd to WDTAB, right above surface pressure, that's for me tho, while, I am not sure what Dos Orugutitas, Is, I heard people talk about it, but I am not sure
I've been waiting for this since you reacted to "We Don't Talk About Bruno" BTW this movie is mostly about generation trauma :). It doesn't necessarily have to be in Asian, and Japanese house holds, but it is more common from what I've seen/heard.
it is very common for this to happen in most southeast asian countries. even just asian countries in general it’s very common. korea, china, india, japan, etc.
very true, the language and culture may change but the message of family pressure, wanting to fit in, and not feeling like you are enough, will ring true for anyone who has gone/is going through something similar. We tend to enclose this to certain cultures but the truth is it could happen anywhere.
@@Ally12554 i dont live in india but i am indian/brown . And oh hell its super common. My grandparents and parents expect me to behave and do certain things. Eg the way i dress, the jobs i take, education path, who i marry etc. But hell my cousins and i have flipped the table fked up all their expectations. But its ok for us cuz we don't get in much trouble. But for others its harder
Also to add on to that comment with Luisa taking care of Mirabel, you notice the only time she's not is during that bridge where she's talking about shaking her burdens and just relaxing, which includes letting Mirable float around, adjust her glasses, pick up on the horse - just letting her sort herself out. Mirabel is always behind her. Honestly, this movie is a masterpiece of symbolism particularly with the clothing.
I 100% percent get what you mean. I think one of the most obvious one's is with the last vesrse of the song "No cracks, no breaks , No mistakes, no pressure" where she pauses the flow of the rhythm for a bit in between no breaks and no mistakes.
For Hispanics in general for the older kids there really is a lot of work on their shoulders and I related to her so much and made me really think hard about my own life
I'm so glad you did a breakdown of this song! I finally watched 'Encanto' last night, and teared up during this song. It hits so hard, especially with me as the eldest sibling (aka, the more mature, and emotionally "strong" one). Such a good analysis, Joel!
Felt. I'm not the oldest, but there is a bigger gap between me and my older siblings than me and my younger siblings so I'm the babysitter mommy #2 type 😂 also the only "sane, responsible" kid lol but it's amazing just sitting back, and telling myself "yes, love others, but I am not responsible for saving everyone all the time. That's what Jesus is for. He died to take the burdens I can't handle alone. Because I can't do it alone." ❤ have an excellent day friend!
I've watched the movie so many times I can't count anymore and I've yet to sing along and not cry 😭 when her voice changes deeper, it sounds like when I'm trying to sing while crying so I'd like to think that Luisa is also tearing up throughout this song too. So emotional.
I saw someone pointed this out somewhere so credit all to that person. So basically what they said is that the reason why she suddenly dance with the donkey is because she saw how terrified her sister, Mirabel is. So she did the dance with the donkey to add more funny-ness I guess? Like to ease her sister. I just think it's a cute little details people missed because they got distracted to the dance and that's the point, to distract people (specially kids). So yea that's all I wanted to share!
Luisa is the representation of the eldest child as she's also the eldest and the strongest. Her entire character is about the eldest and the strongest having to carry the family burden like most eldest children do in families
If you liked the “hurt and” “burden” rhyme, you should check out Hamilton songs! Written by the same artist, LMM, and packed FULL of fun rhymes and wordplay.
I watched Encanto and Tick, Tick Boom on the same flight 😂. That was a lot of LMM influence for one afternoon. Not that I'm complaining. I'm a Hamilton fan. Definitely sensed those LMM vibes during Surface Pressure. It evokes a similar intense feeling as hearing George Washington's part in Right Hand Man, specifically seeing it live with how forward the bass line is in that mix. Not to mention the whole singing/rapping cadence and talking about being "of service" is very Hamilton-esque.
I am a huge Hamilton fan and I thought nothing will ever beat that. I listened to ‘in the heights’ last week and that’s ON REPEAT!!! Lin Manuel Miranda is a gift to this world 😭😭😭😭❤️
i'd love to see joel reviewing encanto as a whole and ranking the songs, because it's a def a movie that has a lot of divided opinion even if people generally really liked it or loved it. it would be a slight change in content but i always enjoy watching reviews, unless it's overtly negative. it's just fun seeing others opinions on movies etc.
Yup, as a Mexican American, my household is very Hispanic. I think majority of Latin family’s can relate to this movie. Generational Trauma is unfortunately a common thing in Latin families. I also relate to Luisa, being an older sister to a lot of siblings and cousins, you tend to look after majority of the kids and work as a third parent. 🇲🇽❤️
She is most definitely a contralto "this growing pressure" is back in the chest and opens up in the back of the throat. You can actually hear it happening, I love it!
5:22 you mentioned how it's funny to dance to a number about anxiety. As an older sister myself, this is how I interpret it: no matter how bad I feel about a bad situation, I always try to make sure the people around me (particularly my sister) feel reassured. I try to be strong and I try to make her laugh so that she can smile when times are tough. But inside, I'm hurting too
I think the most relatable and “hard hitting” moment is the part where she goes from dreams of being able to relax and peacefully dance around in it clouds but the boulders come down and she catches them and sings that the pressure “never stops” and is looking at Mirabel with this defeated look. I’m sure most people have been in that moment. You struggle so long and fight so hard and look around to see so little progress that you think that your the struggle that has completely taken over your life and is crushing you underneath it is endless. You’ll never make it through, it will “never stop”.
Notice also that except the second part of the last chorus, right before the chorus, there's a full ensemble buildup and then as soon as the chorus hits it all drops out for just that piano and rhythm. The piano is just adding flourishes and the beat is all there is. Symbolizes weakness. Also a lot of the words are Trochees again indicating stress, uncertainty, worry, unsettled weakness.
Lin Manuel Miranda did incredible work and he deserve Oscar for "Dos Oruguitas" and finelly EGOT status ♥️ Please make reaction for In the Heights movie 🔥
I am half Colombian and I can definitely say yes, Colombian parents have high expectations for what their childs are doing. I see it with my dad and my aunt quite a lot.
Bless you for editing your videos. I've been scrolling through other reactions and it's so painful. They keep restarting and it's going back to the same thing over and over again, thank you
I am Colombian and I feel so happy to see you reacting to Surface Pressure! :D :D :D It's probably my favorite song out of all of them (the entire soundtrack is awesome). Regarding the pressure we feel from our parents, that definitely applies to us Colombians and I might dare to say most families in Latinamerica have the same type of dynamic. In this song she is also talking about the pressure we feel from "carrying" our family's problems like we are responsible from our family's wellbeing. That's why she says "And see if she can handle every family burden". I do agree that it is definitely something everyone can relate to, no matter where they come from. Much love from Colombia!
A big part of this movie that is not talked about enough is how it's applicable to the immigrant experience in general, which is why I think that it is so similar to the Asian American experience.
Surface pressure was probably my favorite song in the movie! I agree that it's because of the song's content, but it's also so catchy! I might need to go watch this movie...again.
The pressure in Colombia, is a bit different from Asian countries, it’s more from taking care of your family, and how you can be useful for them. So instead of studying it’s a lot more than that
What I love a out this song is the relatability of the lyrics, and how the song flows well as just like... a normal song. It doesn't sound like a disney movie song out of context. The first time I heard it was actually the No Resolve cover, and I had no idea it was a cover. I like the energy of that version more, having heard that one first, but it's really great either way.
HOLY SHIT when the Rocks shes hanging onto breaks and she falls, its followed by a scene of giant rocks coming to crush the town that shes trying to stop. This is a direct analogy of luisa feeling that her showing weakness (falling from the rocks) is something that she wanted to protect people from ever seeing
to me the bridge is what connects this song with the rest of the songs on the movie.. cause it has the same chords as Dos oruguitas, same happens on the song "The family madrigal" when the abuela sings, i liked that detail
I’m really enjoying these little music breakdowns at the end of these song reacts to teach us how to play the songs! Not that I have a clue how, but it makes me want to try! Thank you for this little extra touch!
i rlly like u showed how the chord goes with the chorus and verse at the last bit of the video. ive always wanted to somehow learn how to play it so thank you for that roomie~
I loved all the songs from Encanto, but Surface Pressure and We don't talk about Bruno are my all time fav's! Good job picking up all the little production details! Next can you react to Enemy by Imagine dragons and J.I.D from Arcane? That show's soundtrack was incredible! They even got Sting to do a song! There was also an epic Rap song in one of the episodes (it was called Dynasties and Dystopia)!!!
things i have seen people on other channels say about it that i feel like are so good that i need to share it here also. The donkeys are there as an allegory for how Luisa's family (and really the whole town in general) often treat her as a beast of burden, like a donkey to move/carry heavy loads for others The bit with the unicorn donkeys is meant to show how fantastical/unreal the idea of being able to relax and not have this constant weight on her shoulders seems to her Also, the Titanic was supposed to be an indestructible ship that could handle anything, like the image set for Luisa. But in the end it wasn"t.
when i heard this and delores' solos in the movie i was so surprised because i never thought disney would do something so different from their usual brand, i love it. Lin manuel miranda's writing is so much better here than in vivo imo.

@@KaiKailuv I did the same thing (but with Luisa) and my mum just stared at me and walked off💀
✨ Generational trauma buddies ✨

Lyrics: ”light wind blows”
The movie: *shows a tornado*
Also aren’t we all just dancing through our anxiety at some point-
Also "Run with the ball" *carrying the whole world*
She tends to minimize her problems.
As a Korean, I can 100% confirm that Joel’s thoughts about the surface pressure being a strong Asian quality is true.
Amen!!!

From a Japanese person: 100% accurate.
pressure from your parents in colombia?? yep
way too real, actually, pressure from your parents for all latinos in latam
I even dare to say is pretty common in hispanic households
Like, walking out of the house just because you are over 18 and wanna have a life of your own? hell no
It always shocks me how Joel always notices the tiniest details and just makes me appreciate and love these songs even more
Yeah. I didn’t even notice the background pressure from the backup vocals until he said it
This is hands down my favorite song from the movie. I can't stop listening to it, seriously!
My favorite lyrics are:
Give it to your sister and never wonder
If the same pressure would've pulled you under
That cut deep
I'm Colombian and I totally agree with you
Im from Chile, and this is so true.
3:00 under the SURF-ace. God the amount of details they put into it, every 2 seconds something different
This song was so underrated compared to We Don't Talk About Bruno.
Not really, it's VARY GOOD, and fairly popular, it's just that it's a bit beneath WDTAB because a little more people prefer that over surface pressure(me too).
it's just that one has most characters sing, it's about BRUNO, and it has CAMILO, the best character in the movie
Okay but not as underrated as Waiting on a Miracle. 😤
I feel like “What Else Can I Do?”, “All Of You”, and “Dos Oruguitas” are more underrated imo. I barely hear anything abt these songs from ppl
@@aleedle_leee kinda, yeah, I would say it's 2nd to WDTAB, right above surface pressure, that's for me tho, while, I am not sure what Dos Orugutitas, Is, I heard people talk about it, but I am not sure
@@3bodYking99 Yeah, I understand your point. Also, I totally agree about Camilo. Best character!
The actress that sings this song made a jazz version on her TH-cam and it is very nice sounding
I've been waiting for this since you reacted to "We Don't Talk About Bruno"
BTW this movie is mostly about generation trauma :). It doesn't necessarily have to be in Asian, and Japanese house holds, but it is more common from what I've seen/heard.
Yeee me too!!
it is very common for this to happen in most southeast asian countries. even just asian countries in general it’s very common. korea, china, india, japan, etc.
@@jaeydnheeren I was aware of the other countries you mentioned, but India? I didn't really know it was happening there. Thank you fore educating me 😊
very true, the language and culture may change but the message of family pressure, wanting to fit in, and not feeling like you are enough, will ring true for anyone who has gone/is going through something similar.
The way she (as in the singer) makes her voice match with the lyric is so cool! ( it's hard to explain)
I 100% percent get what you mean. I think one of the most obvious one's is with the last vesrse of the song "No cracks, no breaks
, No mistakes, no pressure" where she pauses the flow of the rhythm for a bit in between no breaks and no mistakes.
I totally agree. I expected Jessica to at minimum be a tall girl by how big she made her voice sound. But she is a tiny woman.
I love how right after the crescendo... she gets soft, weak, vulnerable, before putting the mask back on.
Joel’s just slowly gonna react to the whole movie… not mad about it
He already saw it ( 6:46 )
@@ZolDubs I know.. he hasn’t reacted to it lol
I teared up too 😢❤
I've watched the movie so many times I can't count anymore and I've yet to sing along and not cry 😭 when her voice changes deeper, it sounds like when I'm trying to sing while crying so I'd like to think that Luisa is also tearing up throughout this song too.
Camilo and Luisa are honestly the most accurate middle child characters. I’m a middle child, and I relate so much.

@@saarah12 uhmm no it's Isabella

Luisa is the representation of the eldest child as she's also the eldest and the strongest. Her entire character is about the eldest and the strongest having to carry the family burden like most eldest children do in families
I was sold on drip drip drip in the song.
If you liked the “hurt and” “burden” rhyme, you should check out Hamilton songs! Written by the same artist, LMM, and packed FULL of fun rhymes and wordplay.
He know Hamilton lol
I watched Encanto and Tick, Tick Boom on the same flight 😂. That was a lot of LMM influence for one afternoon.
Not that I'm complaining. I'm a Hamilton fan.
Definitely sensed those LMM vibes during Surface Pressure. It evokes a similar intense feeling as hearing George Washington's part in Right Hand Man, specifically seeing it live with how forward the bass line is in that mix.
Not to mention the whole singing/rapping cadence and talking about being "of service" is very Hamilton-esque.
Or for even More fun. Watch House MD where his lyrical musings are just mwah!

This is definitely my favorite song from Encanto! Jessica Darrow who voiced Luisa did a jazz cover of Surface Pressure which is phenomenal!
*THANK YOU FOR THIS INFORMATION I WILL CHECK THAT OUT IMMEDIATELY*
Yup, as a Mexican American, my household is very Hispanic. I think majority of Latin family’s can relate to this movie. Generational Trauma is unfortunately a common thing in Latin families. I also relate to Luisa, being an older sister to a lot of siblings and cousins, you tend to look after majority of the kids and work as a third parent. 🇲🇽❤️
It's always interesting seeing Joel finding the chords on the piano just by listening to a song!! He's such a music genius!! ❤️👏🏻
I mean, that's also just ear training but ya, he awesome 😊
@@callisastapp7160 You do realize it sounds exactly like stronger from Steven universe
My favorite of the songs from encanto
She is most definitely a contralto "this growing pressure" is back in the chest and opens up in the back of the throat. You can actually hear it happening, I love it!
5:22 you mentioned how it's funny to dance to a number about anxiety. As an older sister myself, this is how I interpret it: no matter how bad I feel about a bad situation, I always try to make sure the people around me (particularly my sister) feel reassured. I try to be strong and I try to make her laugh so that she can smile when times are tough. But inside, I'm hurting too
This is my favorite Encanto song! The very first time I ever heard it it just really caught me in the feels
The songs in this movie are just on another level, very catchy!
Joel is the only guy on TH-cam who pitches in his intro almost 2½ minutes after his video has begun 😆
I really love that you went through the chord progression of the song. Definitely a fun and enjoyable added feature to your video Joel! 😊
Lin Manuel Miranda did incredible work and he deserve Oscar for "Dos Oruguitas" and finelly EGOT status ♥️ Please make reaction for In the Heights movie 🔥

I won’t be surprised if it goes to the James Bond songs, since the academy loves to give Oscar’s to those songs that aren’t all that inventive.
I'm usually not big fan of musical type movies, but the songs in this one absolutely kill

Encanto's songs are really good! I watched it recently and expected to not like it, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Much love from Colombia!
surface pressure is def one of my favorites
A big part of this movie that is not talked about enough is how it's applicable to the immigrant experience in general, which is why I think that it is so similar to the Asian American experience.
6:13 By having no siblings, the song hits even harder. Since all the responsibility would fall to that one and only child and that stuff..hurts.
Surface pressure was probably my favorite song in the movie! I agree that it's because of the song's content, but it's also so catchy! I might need to go watch this movie...again.

Waiting On a Miracle, is my personal favorite. It almost made me cry.
I always love Joel's singing.

Disney just goes full on with it's music most of the times. It's amazing. Thanks for reacting to this Joel.
Yooo, it's epic to see you react to Encanto, Roomie! Looking forward to to you reacting to the rest of Encanto, especially _Waiting on a Miracle_ 🥰💖
to me the bridge is what connects this song with the rest of the songs on the movie.. cause it has the same chords as Dos oruguitas, same happens on the song "The family madrigal" when the abuela sings, i liked that detail
I’m really enjoying these little music breakdowns at the end of these song reacts to teach us how to play the songs! Not that I have a clue how, but it makes me want to try! Thank you for this little extra touch!

Next can you react to Enemy by Imagine dragons and J.I.D from Arcane? That show's soundtrack was incredible! They even got Sting to do a song! There was also an epic Rap song in one of the episodes (it was called Dynasties and Dystopia)!!!
Being the eldest of the family, this song really hits hard through my soul.
It's my favourite song from encanto, to be honest bruno is a bit better for having multiple people in it but still it's amazing
Joel you're so good with the piano!

things i have seen people on other channels say about it that i feel like are so good that i need to share it here also.
The donkeys are there as an allegory for how Luisa's family (and really the whole town in general) often treat her as a beast of burden, like a donkey to move/carry heavy loads for others
The bit with the unicorn donkeys is meant to show how fantastical/unreal the idea of being able to relax and not have this constant weight on her shoulders seems to her
Also, the Titanic was supposed to be an indestructible ship that could handle anything, like the image set for Luisa. But in the end it wasn"t.
Loved the little ‘tutorial’ in the end. Actually I’d like to see more of that, ‘cause it’s sort of really enjoyable :)
