  • This week marked the 100th birth anniversary of yesteryear superstar Dev Anand (born 26 September 1923), who has had generations of women swooning over his indomitable - and ageless - style. In episode 1319 of #CutTheClutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta moves away from the news cycle to remember an actor he admired - and how the ‘hero’ he grew up watching on the big screen became a friend.

Belonging in the same generation, the only Hero for me was ‘Dev Anand’.
    No Loud screams

Sekhar, really it is quite a happy departure. What a wonderful episode it is ,one could come across after a long time. While the daily episodes are a need living on this earth and we cannot afford to ignore them in a well connected world,it is also necessary that we devote our time and attention on culture, arts, science, tech, music, dances, classical literature, our rich temples ,architecture etc of human heritage and India in particular, because there is a world outside the scoundrel politicians. They have though become unavoidable like episecs every century
It is a wonderful episode because Dev Saheb has been most charismatic among his generation of stars. What distinguished him, according to me ,is that his looks, his appearance, his face was the most cospolitan among his Contemporaries. He was out and out an urban folk. What a relief thst you chose to cover him today. Give us a break on occasions.

I had seen many of Dev Sahab's movies on VCR & TV channels but never in a cinema hall. So I immediately booked tickets for the retrospective of his films on his 100th Birth Anniversary held at PVR cinemas. I saw Guide, Johnny Mera Naam & Jewel Thief which I had seen on VCR as a kid but for the first time on the Big screen. All 3 were movies were movies made & released before I was born but I enjoyed the theatrical experience of all 3 movies. All 3 movies were different and can be enjoyed even by today's generation. Guide was about love, greed and redemption. Johny Mera Naam was a typical commercial masala entertainer. Jewel Thief was a slick thriller. Common factors in all movies were wonderful songs, beautiful leading ladies and even Ladies in supporting cast like Johny Mera Naam & Jewel Thief. But Dev Sahab was towering over all of them like a true Superstar would. His style and aura were truly extraordinary and he played his roles with so much ease even in his later films where his mannerisms took over his performances. I loved his zest for life and never say die attitude. So he may not be in this world physically anymore but the Legend lives on through his iconic movies!!!

Shekhar, Guide is one movie I can watch any time. My aunt from Bombay had a video tape, I watched it whenever I visited their home in the 80s. When we bought our CD player in the late 90s, it was our first CD, and now my first set of songs on Spotify are from the guide. I must have watched it over 20 times. Even my daughter likes some of the songs that she saw with us as a 3 year old, especially, Waheeda ji dancing on - Piya Tose Naina lage re and my favorites - Aaj phir jene ki tamana hai and tere mere sapne abh ek.... I am a fan of Dev Anand and not any other star or personality from Films, politics, or sports. I am 61 now, born and raised in Amritsar, traveled and lived in different cities/ countries. Shekhar, by the way, I like you as well since your Indian Express days, covering the militancy in Punjab. I've seen you grow and happy for you. Enjoyed this episode of CTC. Keep it up. Regards 🙏🏻

Just an anecdote that I remember my uncle telling me when i was a kid. My uncle (mama) grew up with him and they used to be very mischevious. My mums maiden name was sahni and thats how we knew them. Never saw him but my nan and uncle used to tell me that when he was famous, his stardom went to his head and my uncle went to meet him after that. He asked my uncle to wait and he was on top of the stairs. My uncle didnt like it and pulled the runner from under his feet to make him realise his stardom dont mean shit to my uncle. They laughed and Dev Sahab apologised 😂❤

I watched these movies later when I was 24-25 and really loved this movie and understood why a child slept while watching this movie.

My personal favourite was Jewel Thief - a brilliant and an absolutely flawless plot directed brilliantly by his brother and acted to perfection by him and Ashok Kumar; combined with S D Burman’s melodies! One of the many things I could never figure out was how did he manage to keep making so many flops for so many years? (Swami Dada might have been his last hit?) Without going bankrupt, that is…..

Thank you Sekarji. I saw Dev sab in Johnny Mera Nam and he was so so beautiful and romantic and Hemamalini looked pale in front of him.
