Awesome video! Could you do a similar one on irons? I'm curious about how well second-hand irons age over time. My main question would be concerning grooves, and how their age can potentially affect shots or not. To me, they're such a huge investment, and shelling out well over $1200 (sorry, US based 😂) on a set just doesn't sit well with me

I almost never buy irons new. I always give it about 6 months after release then pick up a mint set for 60% of retail. Hasnt failed me yet.

Yes, this is what it was looking for too. New golfer and I don’t want to spend thousands on building my first bag. Will wait to buy new after I have a few years under my belt and I really know what I want. I have been buying some used clubs and have built a bag of ping hybrids and call away irons from the last 5 years for about $400 total. Only mistake I made was accidentally buying a call away driver with a senior flex that I don’t care for (I am 45 yrs , 155lbs).
Still, $100 on a bad purchase of the driver is no big deal compared to $500+ on a new one.

The best advice I ever received when it came to new clubs and game improvement was this: "It doesn't really matter what clubs you use, it's the person holding it that counts. Get yourself some lessons before buying new clubs." Case in point - a buddy of mine from another country who's a decent golfer (8 hcp) came to visit me recently. He used my 15 year old Clevelend irons, which he's never played with, and a borrowed putter. He shot 79 on a course he'd never seen.

I went with a second hand Mavrik Sub zero about 6 months ago. Traded in an M5 at Roger Dunn and only paid $25 out of pocket for it. Scored a Ventus Black 6x shaft for $150 and the Mavrik with the Ventus has been a fairway finder! My total cost including the $150 I originally bought the M5 for is $325. Only $25 more than a new Mavrik still sells for, and I have a majorly upgraded shaft.

I bought the Ping 400 last year " New" and I have to agree, this is the easiest driver that I have ever hit . I tried a friend's and was blown away at the length as well as the direction control, went home and ordered one . Each time I hit it I say most forgiving driver ever as the ball finds fairway after fairway .

Rick, this was a very helpful and timely video for me at the moment. I am looking to do exactly this - buy a decent second-hand driver (few years old) that stacks up with what's out there today all at a reasonable price without sacrificing too much in the way of technology or performance. This is perfect for somebody like me who is in the in-between stages of working on their swing while not quite ready to invest in a costly fitting. I would LOVE to see the same kind of video done for your favorite set of irons in the same class. Many thanks!

Same here! I found one on Facebook Marketplace from a local older man for $100!! I met with him and asked, "This seems like a really good deal, are you aware of your price point?" And he says "Yeah, I just want some younger man like you to enjoy it. I shouldn't be swinging a stiff flex anymore these days anyways!" I borrowed a buddy's Sim 2 and didn't see any difference in performance, but that could just be because I'm garbage at golf haha.

@@lilkundawg0913 I swung the M1 and sim2 on the simulator the other day. Main difference I seen was club head speed. The M1 head seems slightly bigger which is probably why. I could only swing it around 105mph while my sim I usually sit sound 113 on a stock swing.

Grabbed myself a Cobra Speedzone Xtreme last year, and couldn't be happier. I've not hit a driver this forgiving on off-center strikes. The ball speed jumps about 3-5mph on center strikes as it should, but off-center it's just so consistent. As much as I want the latest and greatest, I'll keep this baby in my bag for years to come.

I love golfbidder - such a good place to start buying decent equipment. The only caution is, it’s worth getting a fitting to get your basic spec before picking out gear. Don’t buy off the shelf unless you are completely average height and build. As a 5ft10 woman with shorter arms, standard golf clubs just don’t work for me. You pay 25 quid near me if you don’t order gear.
The other thing is that as your swing gets better and faster, you don’t feel bad about changing clubs.
I started with men’s length ladies flex ping gmax 6 years ago and now play 1” longer than men’s regular flex t100s.

I've found that some golf shops like Global Golf sell demo driver heads very cheaply online once the new models arrive. Since most new drivers have adjustable shafts that can be swapped out easily, buying just the head is a great way to save money. Also, it's much cheaper to ship just the head, than the complete club.

I’m not buying a new driver but when it comes to second hand. I’ve finally been able to find a Callaway Rouge (2018) 5W. My father gave me the rouge 3W and I absolutely loved it. So I started looking for a Rouge Driver. Being that we are both left handed it’s definitely harder to find what you are looking for. But I was able to find the rouge driver and got a great deal on it. Since then I would periodically look to see if I could find the 5W and after a year I finally found a left handed rouge 5W in the same shaft as the Driver and 3W and immediately pulled the trigger. At only 110 USD with tax and shipping it was a no brainer for me. Hopefully the wife doesn’t get mad that another golf club shows up at the door. 😂😂😂 great video as always Rick!

I may not be getting the same distance, but then I can't buy youth! Paying £500 or more on ott prices for a driver which may give one an extra 5 yards - then it is not worth it as you can't buy success, but you can safe your money for a rainy day - but don't spend your time in a golf shop on a rainy day!

With the exception of a new set of Taylor Made Sim 2 Max irons that I bought last year, I have bought used clubs for years. These TM were the first new clubs ( had a club fitting) I have bought in 20 years. And I love my Ping G-400! I also have Ping G-400 3 and 5 woods, Ping G-25 7 wood and 23, 27 and 31 Ping G-25 hybrids. I agree with their forgiveness. In the fairway is my choice and I prefer that to a few extra yards and having to play from the rough or worse. Thanks for your videos, I view every one!

i have a Callaway Big Bertha 816 Alpha DBD driver which I love. I won't be changing. I also have matching fairways and 815 2 and 3 hybrids. I doubt I will change those either. Golf Bidder is the best in U.K. 2nd Swing Golf is the best in the U.S. I like your driver picks. M1 is very good - lots of adjustability to make it match your fairway woods so they all swing the same.

I'm still smashing this Titlist 975 J that i got from 2nd Swing in US for $33. No complaints! In fact i just picked up some Wilson Fatshaft Deep Red 3w and 5w and i must admit i love them. I'd be curious to know how Wilson drivers hold up. Never thought i'd dig Wilson so much but the woods had good reviews and were dirt cheep. I've never had much confidence with woods until now.

I doubt you’ll have the opportunity to read this comment, but I like the idea of these videos. I’m in high school, and I’m trying to put together a decent set for cheap. Do you have any recommendations for a forgiving set of clubs that is also cheap enough to afford? Thanks much if you see this!

I got a TaylorMade M3 last year second hand and it has improved my golf game dramatically! From the reviews I have seen it is almost as good as the more recent Sim 2 and even Stealth, but for less than a third of the price.

Spot on Rick for a change ... last year in the winter I paid 249.99 used for a the original Sim with a shaft and its was in mint condition and sold the shaft for 99.99 and used my own shaft ... Thats from global golf , I always stay two years back for this very reason ... Golf can be cheap if you want it to be , but yet still have nice equipment ... Can we get a video on the effects on your body from trying to swing like Bryson , I think its a problem , golf related back surgeries are through the roof in the last two years ...( Source? My uncle is a back surgeon ) Thanks Rick

Hi Rick. Thanx for making golf easy to understand and motivating new players not to be too serious. With all your insight and advice, I've become much more comfortable, as a new golfer, hitting and missing, slicing and duffing among good players without being self conscious. If you are ever in South Africa, come to Port Elizabeth. I've got a house on a golf course.

Rick, I bought new BUT last year’s model.
TaylorMade SIM2 Max 12* loft w/ Ventus Blue regular flex. I originally was fitted for the SIM Max 12 but settled on the Cobra Airspeed F-model at 11* loft because of the price. Did a re-fit this year and pulled the pin.

I purchased the ping 425 max based on your recommendation. I got this driver 1 week before I headed to pinehurst, it was a game changer for accuracy. before I got the driver it was purchased and returned so I got it kind of second hand, it replace the ping G30 LS that I have gammed for quite a long time. Looking at my bag there is not a club in it that I got brand new. keep up the great reviews, and thanks for the content of the best reviews on you tube.

I purchased a G425 Max driver last month and it's supposed to arrive tomorrow! I'm excited! I just started playing last season and was fitted for the PING, but by the time I was ready to commit to purchasing a driver, PING was on back order about 10-16 weeks out. So, I went with the next best thing I could which was the TSI2.
Long story short, when I miss-hit with the TSI, I get punished severely. This season I want to be more efficient and hence why I purchased the PING. I don't know what I will do with the TSI just yet!
    Thanks for the content Rick!

I'm all for 2nd hand drivers, I've just purchased 2 to replace my SLDR, I got the Callaway XR16 pro, and the GBB sub zero. Both are great drivers, with the XR16 I can shape shots off the tee better than ever before, and with the GBB it really goes when you nail one in the middle.

Just bought myself a second hand Taylormade RBZ Stage 2 driver! Been using the 3 wood of the RBZ Stage 2 for years and love it, was struggling with my driver so decided to go with something familiar. I'm a 15 handicapper so don't really see the point in shelling out 400+ on a new driver when my inconsistent ball striking is what's holding me back more than any club technology. Got the RBZ for $90, lovely. Great video as always Rick, would love to see this on irons too

My entire bag is 2nd hand. Pieced my bag together thru Golf Avenue (Canada golfbidder), 2nd Swing, FB marketplace, eBay and a couple buddies who were upgrading. They’re not all perfect clubs but I’ve been able to research and make adjustments to fit my swing. Much cheaper than brand new and they play fantastic.
