I’ve listened to the cast album more times than I can count, and the scene with the engineer, Kim, and Thuy never fails to stun me. It is probably the most intense and emotional scene in theater history.

For sure. Even on a phone screen, it’s still staggering!

@@mhlkta8516 I always find myself holding my breathe when Thuy grabs Tam and raises the knife. Even though I know what’s coming.

Thank you for reminding me how powerful and dramatic this show is. Even watching you watching this on an iPhone still blows me away. And LEA!!! OMG!!! Just can’t! All that vulnerability and steely determination. She deserves all those awards and more.

Kim cried when Thuy died because she knows that all he really wanted was to save her and take her away from that place or her misery, it's just that Kim is not inlove with him and Thuy doesn't want her son. You can see the effort in finding Kim even after so many years.

Lea is heartbreaking! As bad as the sound quality of this recording may be, you can clearly feel the emotions she is transporting. Of course the cousin and the engineer are great, too.

This is part of history that a lot of people fled Vietnam. They were known as Boat people. Most made it to refugee camps in Thailand. While on the boats, pirates attacked them. Kim needed help to leave Vietnam. The Engineer thought he could get to the United States with a child who was half American. The United States was very tough on who could come in and who couldn’t. France was easier on the half Vietnamese and half French.

The Engineer is like the Thenardiers in Les Miserables… he’s the cold, hard truth in the lives of those who have nothing. “Clear away the barricades and we’re still there!”

Love this! There's a few time jumps coming up, just to warn you. Also yes, the scene with Kim and Thuy is wild and one of my favorite performances ever!

So glad you’re enjoying it. They’re all tremendous performers. I really hope you get to see a live performance of a musical, and try to get the best seats possible. You will will be blown away, and if you feel it during a video, imagine what you’ll experience in real life!

Reacting to this just now. But I saw Miss Saigon many years and this cast was so full of Filipino theater giants--Lea Salonga as Kim, Leo Valdez as The Engineer, Robert Seña as Thuy and a host of others in the ensemble.. The musical has undergone its own revolution over the years and yes, musical theater on Broadway, the West End and in most parts of the world has loads of Filipino actors just doing what they do best--perform! Great musical.

Her cousin was the last link to her past. He was the only person on the planet who remembered her parents, her childhood. I think she loved him like you do a childhood friend or sibling but that doesn’t mean she could love him love him - nor could she let him kill her child - but it didn’t mean she enjoyed watching him bleed out.

Kim's anguish is that he's the last of her family.....and her entire village. They grew up together and were friends and cousins - so she does love him....just not enough to marry him at 16 years old.

  • @jwf-ko2fw
    @jwf-ko2fw ปีที่แล้ว +10

Re: “Cousin” doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing in this story as it does to us in the US in 2023. Thuy was a relative of Kim’s AND her betrothed, but not necessarily the child of her mother’s or father’s immediate sibling. It could be that the village where Kim comes from was made up of only three or four clans (or families).

She needed to bring the engineer with her. It’s not safe for a woman travelling alone in that situation.

  • @callalily3994

About the Engineer going with them -- at that point, there was really no way to communicate to the US government directly from Vietnam. If they want to do anything -- get a visa, find a way to find Chris, and so on -- they need to do it from somewhere else. But there's no legal way for them to get to anywhere else. The Engineer is using his connections to illegally get them on a boat to Bangkok, so he's got to go with them.
Another impressive thing here is how young the little boy playing Tam is. Kids in Broadway shows aren't new, but usually they're at least 7 or 8 years old or so. That kid is no older than about 4, and he's not only able to remember where he's supposed to go and what he's supposed to do, but he's doing it with all the noise and lights and everything else going on. (Or it might be a she -- I know that some of the kids who played Tam were little girls with their hair cut short.) And most shows play way past a typical preschooler's bedtime -- basically, for a kid to be in this show, the whole family is uprooting their schedule around it.

Back again. I so enjoy your reactions to this show! Lea’s performance is so moving. She originated the role in the West End at 18, then on Broadway at 20, returned to Broadway in 1999 and then did this Manila production right before going back to broadway to close the show. This was all before Lea was married or had a child in real life.

So the engineer “saved” Kim from her village and she was so young I’m sure she in a way trusts him. He needs her and she needs him to get across the boarder. Also interesting fact. The engineer is half French so that May also have some kind of influence especially with a “family” idk that’s my theory.

  • @meredithchandler73
    @meredithchandler73 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Kim was not going to be able to just leave the country alone. Many people wanted to leave Vietnam to try to leave the country and it's not so simple. Including the Engineer - he has wanted to leave since the regime change! Kim needed the Engineer's help and the Engineer needed the American connection in Kim's son Tam.

At the end, I feel like you couldn't quite understand what they were singing, so here's the lyrics:
    No grace, no hope
    No life, no hope
No chance, no change (no regrets)
No grace, no hope (no return, no goodbye)
No life, no hope (no regrets, no return)
No chance, no change (no goodbye, no regrets)
One day (no return) one night (no goodbye)
One day (no regrets) one night (no return)
One day (no goodbye) one night (no regrets)
    One day!

This is based on the opera Madam Butterfly. I saw this production of miss Saigon on its opening night in London it was fantastic.
You as an American seem to have a complete lack of knowledge about a war that your country were heavily involved in. You don’t seem to fully understand what is going on here, and I would suggest you stop making assumptions as you are wrong and are missing the plot.

Specifically, North Vietnam won the war. I believe you're talking about her fiancé, not her cousin. They were promised to each other in an arranged marriage.

  • @702heath

The guy is not her cousin. He pretended to be her cousin so that the engineer will look for Kim and bring her to him. If he told the engineer the truth about the marriage arrangement made by their parents , the engineering might not cooperate.
