  • Here is a breakdown of the chords behind Dirk Powell’s wonderful song Waterbound .. I have been chasing this one for years .I have a few takes of this in many tunings all staying away from the 4 chord or Sub-dominant. i wanted to show the shape of the song as Dirk is doing it .. For my old voice I need to drop it down to D . Dirk is plying this in Cumberland Gap tuning down at E . eC#F#BC#..Thanks to Adam Hurt for describing this tuning as a sawmill tuning with a dropped fifth string … I am playing my wonderful Mike Ramsey banjo for this one. PS at 3:15 I misspoke : the domiant or 5 chord is ring ringer first string second fret and the middle finger Fourth String Second Fret

    I've been playing around in several different tunings and didn't think of dropping the 5th string, thank you for posting this lesson!

    I missed this tutorial after learning from your other video and I've been trying to figure out how to throw some variation into the tune. I'm no literate musician but it feels like the whole melody is a progression of 1/8th notes, which makes it difficult to add to the tune without taking something away and making it sound like a different song. This is great though. Really stepped-up my presentation of the song, these chords really let me explore the emotions of the tune. If that seems like something some goober would say after getting high and picking around on the banjer... well... it is.

      Waterbound is perfect for Dulcimere .. I might try "baggpipe tunning" dd d D before inonian C but it will sound great on that instrument .. Have a blast ..

    Many, many thanks Guy for this video which I have re visited after a long while and managed to get a grip of this beautiful song now as I’ve been playing and recording in a lowered tuning(double A#) for a while now and it all makes sense to me now! Another banjo purchase certainly helped motivate me also. 👌🎶

    I fell in love with Bailey Cooke's version of this song, though I can't figure out the tuning she's in for the life of me... it has a very unique sound

    • @guywolff
      @guywolff  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello 1203 .Yep she is using Cumberland Gap Tuning .She is playing it tuned just like Dirk but up the neck 4 frets at a#GCFG (from regular pitch Dirk has lowered the strings as well for his take way down to E ) .It is Sawmill tuning with the 5th string dropped to be in tune with the first string at third fret .. Also: She is playing it without going to the 4 chords on the word "bright" ..She like most of my takes stayed away from the sub Doniant 4 and exchanges it for the realitive minor to the Tonic .. All the best , Guy ...
