Testing Handcrafted Clarinets at Music Fair 2024: My Impressions (in the description)

Ich habe auf der Messe 7 Klarinetten von 5 großen Klarinettenmanufakturen ausprobiert. Die Preise der Instrumente variieren von 4500 bis 15500 Euro. Für mich ist klar, und das habe ich bestätigt, dass der höchste Preis nicht unbedingt die beste Leistung bedeutet und dass das Instrument nicht immer am besten zum Musiker passt. Alles ist sehr individuell und ziemlich kompliziert. Es gibt viele andere Faktoren, einschließlich Zubehör, die berücksichtigt werden müssen. Um ein Instrument auszuwählen, braucht man natürlich viel mehr Zeit. Dieser kurze Test, den ich auf der Messe durchgeführt habe, war letztendlich ein grober Überblick, der durch den ersten Eindruck mein Fazit beeinflusste. Andererseits zählt bekanntlich genau der erste Eindruck am meisten. Mein Favorit Nummer eins nach dem Test ist die Leitner & Kraus Klarinette: leichte Ansprache und Staccato in allen Lagen, sehr gute Intonation, bequeme und komfortable Mechanik. Favorit Nummer zwei ist die Dietz Klarinette: weicher angenehmer Ton, gute Ansprache und Staccato, gute Intonation, etwas gewöhnungsbedürftige Mechanik. Favorit Nummer drei ist die Seggelke aus Leadwood-Holz: sehr leichte Ansprache und Luftzufuhr, gute Intonation und angenehme Klappenmechanik, schöne braune Farbe, aber sehr hoher Preis. Das sind meine Eindrücke, natürlich subjektiv. Trotzdem hoffe ich, dass ich jemandem bei der Auswahl des Instruments helfen konnte.
P.S.: Möglicherweise hat L&K einen einfacheren Klang als Dietz, aber das war ein einfaches Boehm-Modell von L&K; sie bieten auch Reform-Boehm mit einem 14 mm Bohrung sowie Wiener Bohrung mit 15 mm Durchmesser an (hier ist Link zum Test: • Perfect Evolution of C... , was dem Klang ein ähnliches Timbre wie bei Dietz verleiht. Außerdem kann man mit Hilfe von verschiedenen Zubehörteilen wie Mundstück und Birne den Klang beeinflussen. Zwei Faktoren spielen für mich auch eine sehr wichtige Rolle: das Spielgefühl und die Handhabung (bequeme Mechanik). Und beide dieser Eigenschaften waren bei L&K ohne jegliche Eingewöhnungsphase besser als bei Dietz.

I tested 7 clarinets from 5 major clarinet manufacturers at the fair. The prices of the instruments range from 4500 to 15500 euros. For me, it is clear, and I have confirmed, that the highest price does not necessarily mean the best performance and that the instrument does not always suit the musician best. Everything is very individual and quite complicated. There are many other factors, including accessories, that need to be considered. Of course, choosing an instrument requires much more time. This short test, which I conducted at the fair, was ultimately a rough overview that influenced my conclusion through the first impression. On the other hand, as they say, the first impression counts the most. My number one favorite after the test is the Leitner & Kraus clarinet: light articulation and staccato in all registers, very good intonation, comfortable and smooth mechanics. Favorite number two is the Dietz clarinet: soft pleasant tone, good articulation and staccato, good intonation, slightly unusual mechanics. Favorite number three is the Seggelke made of Leadwood: very light articulation and airflow, good intonation and pleasant key mechanics, beautiful brown color, but very high price. These are my impressions, of course subjective. Nevertheless, I hope I could help someone in choosing the instrument.
P.S.: Maybe L&K has a simpler tone compared to Dietz, but that was a basic Boehm model from L&K; they also offer Reform-Boehm with a 14mm bore as well as Viennese bore with a 15mm (test is hier: • Perfect Evolution of C... ), which gives a similar timbre to Dietz. Additionally, you can experiment with the tone using different accessories like mouthpiece and barrel. Also, two factors play a very important role: playing feel and handling (comfortable mechanics). And both of these qualities were better with L&K without any adaptation phase compared to Dietz.

You said L&K was number 1 and Dietz number 2. But to my ears the Dietz sounded significantly better - a fuller and more mellow sound. The L&K was too bright in comparison. But the recording conditions were not ideal, so maybe the sound here is not representative of how things really are. Interesting, anyway - thanks.

You may be right. But for me, the playing feel is crucial when testing, and my fingers need to feel comfortable with the mechanics. When comparing all the pros and cons, in my opinion, L&K comes out on top. The sound can be adjusted with suitable accessories like mouthpiece or barrel. Additionally, that was a basic Boehm model; L&K also offers models with German and Viennese bores, which produce different sounds. And my reed was a bit too light for L&K.

How do you think the sound of L&K and S&S, which have the more warm and deep sound?

A 15,000 expensive Seggelke model made from leadwood sounded interesting; in any case, the response was easy. For me, L&K offers the complete package: tone, easy response, very good intonation, comfortable mechanics, and relatively affordable price. I particularly liked the tone of the Dietz clarinet.
