As a kid I listened to 80's music along with 70's and 60's music, everything from Earth Wind & Fire to Jimi to Count Basie. From a young age, and even a musician today, I've always been fascinated with the synthesizer. What's more, I always knew the 80's would come back. And boy have they. Not only with this track but with big names like the weekend etc. Cheers, and mad respect on this beautifully mastered track.

Yes, I smashed that like button hearing this. Why? Because this song truly captures the essence of music in the ‘80’s. So much of the Retrowave genre focuses on heavy synth sounds with a brooding atmosphere. This is different. It’s fun. It’s poppy. It is the antithesis to what most people think the ‘80s sounded like. Take it from someone who lived it - this is about as close as you can get to what the actual ‘80’s pop scene sounded like without actually living it. Not all of it was retro future spacey sounding. A lot of it was actually fun and shaped a lot of people’s lives, including this fella. Would I want to go back to that time? Yes and no. The music and pop culture, yes. Everything else, no. It wasn’t a perfect time. Compared to modern times, though, it was and will always be a better time to live.
Yeah, most 80s-influenced synthwave sounds like stuff straight out of a low budget action movie starring Van Damme instead of a Billboard Top 100 song. This is a very good pastiche.
Agreed! I still love this song for the very reasons I listed. It takes me back to my childhood, even though it really wasn’t around in my childhood. It just captures everything I loved about music back then. A lot of music that is made in the retro wave now sounds so cheap and like you said - low budget movie soundtrack material. But Sunglasses Kid takes it up several notches and produces music that so reminds you of that time without actually being in that time. There is no one that does it better!
So true. A lot of modern retro synth wave sounds like an alternate universe 80's. I appreciate it, but it's not the 80's I remember. I love this sunglasses kid song because he's not trying to modernise it. If this was actually released in the 80's, there's no doubt in my mind, it would end up in the pop charts.
Gotta say, even though F13 brought me to this page and I'm a huge fan of not only that franchise but 80's music in general, this truly captures the 80's, the beat, the singing, and that's why it's so authentic, very, very awesome, keep up the great songs!
Whilst blade runner style synthwave did exist in the 80's, this was the actual mainstream pop genre that was popular. You've done an incredible job with this. This genre actually came from freestyle, which is my favourite underground genre of the 80's. The best commercial example of freestyle is Taylor Dayne - tell it to my heart and freestyle - don't stop the rock. I urge budding 80's historians to explore this vibrant genre, it's the missing link that connects everything from pop to early house music and it's just awesome with amazing synths and crazy drum beats.
