Thrifting For Profit | The Best Side Hustle Of 2021!

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 27 ม.ค. 2025
- Thrifting for profit isn't for everyone. If you live in an area with crazy prices or just not many thrift stores, your opportunities will be a little limited. But, for a lot of folks, this can be a great source of income whether you choose to do it as a part time side hustle or as a full time job. It isn't easy, and you wont always find the best stuff, but it is possible to make several hundred or even thousands of dollars each week if you are willing to put in the work.
Thanks for watching!

JOSH! If you put rolled up newspaper in wet shoes, it will dry the shoes in 1/5 the time!!! You can even take out the wet newspaper in 15 min, and place dry newspaper back in for faster drying! It’s a trick as a winter camper / mountain biker. I’d slosh thru mud and water all day, do the newspaper trick, and wet, muddy shoes would be good to go within a few hours or so.
Careful, the print from newspaper may bleed
@@constancerobinson1377 maybe hit up auhaul for a box of their pointless newspaper
Theres also lead powder on newspaper at least in my region
Where the heck do you get newspaper easily? 😂
@@deidrecalabro5725 delivered on my doorstep on the weekends, then I read said newspaper
Here's one of those laundry rules of thumb I hope you'll find helpful: before you wash/dry an item, make sure your buttons are UNBUTTONED and your zippers are ZIPPED. This protects the fasteners and other clothing that might be present. Thank you for doing your videos. I'm learning.
I also like how honest and forthright you are explaining how you will cut off now, then say I'm back after two hours...etc. It's REAL.
Yay! I'm so excited! I just bought the "Greetings from Florida" pillow! It's gonna go perfect in my 1988 RV that I live in full time, as well as reselling from, remodeling to make it MCM/ vintage Florida tourism 🌞. Thank You Josh!
I love watching your channel you're inspiring, motivating and very informative, ooohhhh also, CONGRATS on the bazillion subscribers!!
Thanks for the support!
@@HairyTornado where are you thrifting from?
@@kimroe2550 You should watch the video.
Sounds like what I hope to be doing. In another year. What kind of an rv Roxie?
@@constancerobinson1377 Mabel (that's what I named my RV) is a 1988 Ford econoline cab/chassis, Fleetwood Jamboree Rallye. The engine had been recently replaced with a rebuilt 460 Lincoln motor (don't quote me on the size I have it written down in her log book) & her tires were fairly new. Technically she could sleep 6 people, but it's just me and my 4lb furbaby Pearl that has her Sweet 16 Birthday this Sat Aug 28 💗🎂.
Constance if you wanna find me on fb under the same name and message me with any questions, I can tell you more.
You can return the Patagonia to the store for trade on the value of the item or they will send it out to repair the zipper. Or you can choose to donate the item to them and they rework it or sell as wornwear. Super respectful company and very smart policy...
The goodwill bins store looks like the most miserable anxiety inducing living nightmare or a shopping experience you could possibly ever create.
Agree😂 I have been trying to get up the nerve to go for years!
That’s okay. More for us! Stay gone!
@@kristinbrown6768 love your attitude Kristin! I’ve been twice but I am still not searching the bins properly
It’s definitely not for everyone
Goodwill is like a box of chocolates
Also from 100k in April of 2021 to (looks) 237k in December is HUGE my dude! Congrats! to you both!
Lol when you said "clean up a little bit" to your dog, it looked down like F that
Please, please, please make a video about what shoes are worth flipping and how to clean them to get them ready to post.
Life hack: you can press the side buttons on the gas pump while the ad is playing and one of them is the mute button! Press all of them and find it!
It's the second one down on the right usually! :)
Hoppy Easter to Mr. 100k Hairy Tornado! Hope you have a wonderful holiday with family! Thrifting is definitely the best side hustle of 2021, and it's fun too! Thanks for making these videos Josh!
Hey Josh, I found some needlepoint and felt vintage Christmas stocking kits at a yard sale super cheap (like $3 ea) and 1 sold for $70 before Christmas. It was an oop one. Always pick up those kits!
Good to know. I didnt think they had any value.
They make a spray can product that you can spray old dusty wicker with...you can get it at any craft store! Brings it amazingly back to life in less than a minute. We used it all the time at the floral shop.
It would be cool if you could provide the product name to clean the wicker! I looked in two online craft stores - couldn't find anything remotely close - thanks!
Someone else probably already said but, the "problem" with cassette players is an easy cheap fix. Pulley belt is stretched and needs replacing. 5 dollars for several belts.
Folks follow you because you teach, are kind and courteous. Also you don’t scream at us. I am an old lady just enjoying watching.
Loved the longer video and your breakdown of everything including your time and gasoline was great. I like watching you tear into bins to find things. I enjoy how you explain your process - it helps me understand everything. Thanks and love you so much!
Moses, lol, when you say "clean up a little bit" he looks around the floor then has the expression of 'none of this is even mine!' ha ha
Need to get you a shoe shelf for the dryer.
The way you break things down is amazing. I really enjoy watching and learning from you
Glad to see you thrifting Josh! This is the stuff that got me to subscribe to your channel in the first place.
The people at your BINs are NUTS!
They are Speed Chucking...then again our BINs are loaded, they don't start in cardboard boxes.
Very 1st walking in, that Grandma 👵 was chuckin some heavy stuff like the HulK
Love how much you say “ Love you so much” moe is so lucky to have you all as his parents
The Plush you grabbed after the pikachu is also a pokemon plush. Blaziken according to comps he goes at around 25-30. Just in case you see it again.
It wasn't a full plush. It had rigid legs and a battery compartment
I was just coming to say the same. Probably worth picking up
Checked the comments just for this, any pokemon item will sell
@@nickrm7 Amen to that, heck I would have bought it from Josh myself because I don't care what condition a plush/toy is in if I like it then I'll buy it.
This is a super old video so I know you dont remember but you missed a stuffed animal Blazkin ! It's a really good pokemon lol it was by pikachu
Josh, Your thrifting and EBAY sales is what brought us here, so that can never stop ! LOL
i love the way you break down the numbers, I appreciate that! keep thriving!!
It's always interesting when you show us how it is really done. It's much more effective than just talking about it. Good job on the video!
I agree 100%. It validates me and gives me hope I'm in the right direction.
Glad we had a bit of thrifting haul video. Remember most of us aren't making you tube videos buying pallets or meeting people for a truckload of golf clubs or whatever. Missed your thrifting trips...and of course we love Mose.
Agreed! Love Mose. Pat Mose more gently on the head? :)
$40 an hour (that's better than $80k a year). The size and pace of your reseller operation suits you pretty well, and if you have no need to grow a lot, that's just great. But a real fact of life many people ignore is, if you wanted to launch a big growth plan and build your business into the 7 figures or even 8 figures per year, you could do it and do it for far less upfront investment than virtually any other business plan you could think of. Sell on bro, sell on!
Josh just a tip. When your at the gas pumps that have the TVs things playing, you can push the second button down on the right side of the screen and it mutes the tv. Just figured I’d let you know as I just learned this myself.
Thank you for showing the process of cleaning and listing. That would be awesome if you did more of those. It was very informative. Thanks again.
Those really cool 80s swim trunks look like a pair George Michael worn in a WHAM video.
U I u
Reminds me of Rocko's Modern Life...Lol 😆
The fact that someone in America knows this fact makes me happy ...George Michael is my favourite singer
Hi Josh! I think Patagonia offer a lifetime guarantee on their items or something like that, so it might be possible to bring the vest to one of their stores and they should be able to fix the zipper (or at least so I've heard). Happy Easter! :)
I was just going to comment this! Yes, they will repair it! They are a company committed to not letting items go to the landfill :)
Josh, the issue with that tape player is likely one of the o-ring black belts behind the player. They are basically just like a rubber band only smaller in diameter so they wear out. I had to replace my technics bands on my old dual tape player and it still plays and records tape to tape with the new o-ring/bands, pretty fun.
You should list the vest with defect mentioned. Some people never zip their vests anyway :). Worth a try..
Nah because the buyer could claim you sold them a broken item without stating it and on ebay you lose both your money and sometimes product too
@@johnlang160 he meant list it WITH mentioning the defect
A 30 minute Hairy Tornado video? What a great day
Feeling some serious Zach Morris vibes on the bathing suit. I dig it. Great video as usual!
You can send in the Patagonia to the manufacturer and get it repaired for like 5 dollars as of 2021. I do it for items I get for personal use. Strange fact - their repair warehouse is in Reno NV where I live.
I always love the "Clean up a little bit" head pats. You'd lose it if he actually did lol
If I cleaned shoes in the kitchen sink my wife would kill me!!😁
LOL! I was wondering about that!
I said Same thing..its just nasty. I think he's more interested in making videos. That's just subject matter
@@garyk5959 it aint that deep, not like you serve ur food from the sink, you wash your dirty hands in the sink..
@@jarvishodkinson806 ever stepped in DOG shit? Ever stood at a urinal at a football game😅🤣. Then you donate your shoes to Goodwill?
@@garyk5959 ah well I’m sure you could see/smell that nasty stuff and avoid the sink🤣you make a good point though
Thanks for the comment shoutout Josh. No hate at all intended when I asked that in the last video, just was genuinely curious since these are my favorite style of videos to watch!
Thanks for the inspiration!
@@HairyTornado @8:26 you had that Blaziken Pokémon plush in your hands! Not sure which brand or year it is but probably worth around $20 on average
Wow! The belts in a cassette deck are way more complicated than i ever knew. Thanks for the little rabbit hole I fell down in researching this one. Lol. Love this stuff.
Oh my god I’m crying of laughter the way Dora the explorer flew @10:09 while sifting through the bins hahahah🤣🤣🤣 anyway cool video and thanks for the well needed laugh !!
Josh you are the best, thanks for being so transparent about everything involved
It was nice to see a thrifting video!! It has been awhile. 🌞
OMG, the duck basket!! My mom has one in my room when I stay there on weekends 🤭😁. 👍🏾 from London. I would have bleached the laces on the golf shoes but you sold them so that’s a moot point 🤣
"Copyriiiiight Music!!!" haha! Nice to see a thrifting video again.
Thank you for this video. Just getting to watch it now in Jan 2022. Still trying to wrap my head around the spent vs earned vs hourly wage. Thank you for the informative video. Loving watching you and how you do it. I've purchased over 100 items from Goodwill to get my store up and going after three years being down. Took me almost three weeks to unwrap, wash, get stickers off, write down in book, photograph, research as best I could and rewrap and put away. Thought I'd never get done. Will reopen and start posting on ebay in February. Three things are being donated to Goodwill as I made mistakes in purchasing.
Hope it is working well for you
I love how much Huey Lewis & The News I hear playing at the thrift stores you visit. There's two songs from their Sports album in this video alone lol 😂🙌
Great intro on this on Josh loved how you showed us the little details like the gas was low and slowly zoomed out . Great quality !
That Realistic/Radio Shack clock radio takes me back. That was really high-tech back in the '80s and I remember coveting them mightily, but I just wasn't willing to shell out the $30 that they cost at the time. If I'd have found that for $4 I'd have bought it just for the nostalgia.
I really like the way you source josh! I love the longer videos man! 💪🏼💪🏼
I do too!
i am really like that you show as the good and the bad staff you picking. Like the vest with the zipper broken .also like your positive attitude about it.
Wow... Gettin' fancier with your edits and storytelling I see. Looks great, my man. :)
Oh my gosh , your goodwill's are so much cheaper then the ones in Minnesota!! Shoes average 15.00 for name brand
My wife puts our daughters stuffed animals in a pillow case and ties the end off. That and we keep tennis balls in our dryer. The pillow case helps prevent pilling and and damage to the stuffed animals and the tennis balls we use all the time. They speed drying time.
I know I'll sound like such a mom, but please get some gloves for shopping the bins! They are dangerous! I use gardening gloves with a heavy leather palm.
Yup like this longer vlog style video 💕 ty
Bins look like a nightmare I give you credit!
0:47 depending on location if you hit the second square button down from the the top right it will mute the tv.
Did Ebay complicate things further for sellers? Wanting Social security numbers etc. I'm in Mesa Az. You mentioned a farmer's tan. It was 99 degrees over the weekend. I contacted the local sell by the pound Goodwill in Phoenix asking them about mystery pallets. They have no clue what it is. I do know Goodwill and a large charity run by the LDS church Deseret landfills their overflow. The Pima tribe that runs our landfill's has them dump the roll off in a secluded part of the dump so they can dig through it. The load I saw last had probably 20 mountain and bmx bikes in it plus tons of clothes and misc. stuff. If they did sell by the pallet they could make a lot of money. Either they have never thought of doing so or don't want to waste the time.
Congrats on your 100,00 subscribers!I love your TH-cam channel I learn so much about reselling. I would have never thought about taking batteries out of things, I will now 👍
I could not leave a Bible! I love how you put the Bible in your bin cart carefully!
I'm watching ebay for that Florida pillow. I love that retro artwork.
It sold already :(
So glad I found you. New subscriber! Lots of information that I can put to practice day one. Keep up the good job!
you left that Pokemon Mega Blaziken.
The red one after the Pikachu.
I was screaming at you lol!
Great educational, inspirational and entertaining video…… Thanks Josh!!!👍
Happy Easter. I enjoyed this video. from buying to listing to selling. Very nice format
Thanks for sharing your thirfting adventures! I picked up a new in package Elsa Williams once...it was rare and one had auctioned/sold on Ebay for about 150. I listed mine the same way starting the auction at $50..and it went for around $300! I thought they might not pay for it...lol. But they did and it was one of my best returns ...I think I might have paid $4 for it! Always looking for those now! Happy hunting!
We did stuff different we had a machine in the back that dumped the stuff into the blue bins and are bins where never dirty like that and never no sharp stuff
The miracle thaw is awesome! Definitely thaws frozen food out quickly!
My man! Saw you grab that pikachu man pretty cool stuff. You missed some BRAND NEW native kids shoes brother! 🤪 love the channel keep it up. Go Gamecocks
Happy Easter!! You have blessed me in making this content. I have learned so much from you🐇🐇
LOVE the green back light!
These goodwill bins seems like such an American thing. People pushing others out of the way and running into the store just to be first for stuff that costs basically nothing. Murrrica.
Your entire video was great. I don’t know why I’m still hung up on you talking to birds at the gas station. Probably because I do the same thing lol! Thanks Josh! 👍
7:10 The guy throwing all the stuff like no mercy 😂😂
Always enjoy your thrifting vids. Appreciate the #'s. Keep up the great work Josh! Appreciate you!
HT - Sorry if already suggested but normally when cassette machines don't work like this, it's the rubber drive belt which loses its elasticity and therefore grip. Cheap and (normally) easily replaced.
THAT TAPE DECK NEEDS A NEW BELT, THEN IT WILL WORK FINE.
Does tape decks were famous for the rubber belts stretching out and then it wouldn't play anymore
Happy Easter!!! Just smashed the like button!!!!
OMG! Pink Lady apples are my FAVORITE! Not the easiest to find though
The Patagonia vest that you couldn't sell...when I have something like that, I will save it for the next time I take a trip and will leave it folded by the trash can in the hotel room. I will get a wear or two out of it, will leave it so someone else might be able to wash it and get some wear out of it, then it will leave some room in my luggage to put some thrifted items to take home with me! I also have made quilts out of squares of fabric from sweatshirts or vests like that that are soooo warm. I had a quilt made up of 12" squares of sweatshirt material one time that was not pretty but it was the warmest quilt EVER.
Glad youre thrifting - I'll admit that I get my"fix" by watching some youtubers thrifting. I'm from a smaller northern area, plus since covid, thrifting is almost nonexistent for me right now.
I do not sell anything on ebay, only on Facebook Marketplace. Little things like plants, seeds, and other things of my own. But yet I still have to binge watch TH-camrs thrifting stuff at the bins and Goodwill. Living vicariously through them!
Your videos are getting more and more artsy I like it!! All enjoy them but also like how you are filming nice use of the drone 👍👍
Tried a Goodwill Outlet for the first time. made some beginner mistakes yet did very well. Found an oversized pieces Ravensburger puzzle taped shut (but in tiny pen 3 pieces missing found after I got it home, as I love puzzles will do it anyhow.) Brooks running shoes an older model never found a picture that looks similar too worried it might be counterfeit, but they are in my size and totally comfortable, a stainless steel extra tall pot, 5 books one is a Black & Decker Deck Building book and another is a Japanese kite designs book , and an extra large plaid cotton outdoor table cloth. Less than $8 total. Spacing is 1 person per bin and a rotate every so many minutes. Everyone must mask and wear rubberlike gloves to get in the door. Books $.49, general merch including shoes $1.69 a pound some kitchen ware $1.39 a pound. Trying to interest my 12 year old grandson in doing it perhaps with me. He is, his own idea, buying candy in the Dollar store, and peddling it to other kids on breaks at school. No close quick in and out or fast food stores near this school.. Can kids sell on EBAY?
This was an awesome thrifting video Josh! I love the hourly rate breakdown at the end! 🙏🔥
I love your content I swear all you care about is golfing stuff and shoes like you passed up on the nice skates and that beautiful buz lightyear toy like you always pass on so much good stuff 😬
i got a very nice french pan today and iwas very happy when seeing it worth good money on the ebay then when iam trying to shiping it found out some crck on it. felt bad but because iam seeing your video now on april 4th.i felt i should be positive like you and deal with the everything positivly.thank you so much iam sahar from canada having seeing your videos for long time they really inspiring and alot of leasons ilearned from them.i wish i can meet one day iam just cross the border.
I ain't 100% sure but I think your Niki Shirt with that J monogram on the sleeve is a Managers shirt from the Flying J Truck stops but research it to make sure.
I dont know how you can go thrifting without being curious of clothing! I know you only sell hardgoods and shoes mostly, but I so curious to check jackets and coats, mens pants, women's etc. But then again this is why I end up being there for 2 hours lol
I sent my wife an invoice for taking the items I've sourced. 🤣
Duck basket! Cute with pine cones or such!
That polkadot bag looked kinda cool.
The blue-ish purple-ish bag…
Oh yeah and that duck basket 🧺… wicker is an expensive hobby 😂
Those roller skates at the bins caught my eye. I sold two pair within a month this year. Even the manufacturers are having trouble keeping up with demand. I know a few people who waited months for new skates from a website (Moxi).
They were pretty cheap feeling.
If you press the 2nd button on the right (of screen) itll turn the sound off at the gas pump!!!
Patagonia does have a repair policy. I don’t know if yours would qualify for free repairs but it would be worth looking into.
Wow! They make YOU unload the containers? Smooth move by them to get free labor Lol. :) No used soda streams for me. Had a bad sale with the first one I bought. Tanks resell well though.
That was a Blaziken pokemon plush next to Pikachu which would have made you some money, too!
Great intro into the video ! I would list the pillow as vintage for $25 and let people talk you down. The design was definitely vintage !
@2:30 Those DirecTV usually have a hard drive in them that you can get out of it and resell for a decent price depending on the storage capacity.
