    ►WE USE THIS CAMERA (B&H) - buff.ly/3rWqrra
►WE USE THIS SOUND RECORDER (AMAZON) - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
    Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/425k5rG
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/3WEuz0k
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv

The main character, what he/ she wants to do, what they're up against.

Very useful to demystify the dreaded log-line for us.

Steve’s formula is super solid. Another one I’ve recently discovered is; [main character] who wants to [physical goal] despite [irony of the situation].

I think a major obstacle toward writing loglines is that we think we need to *both* communicate the concept *and* demonstrate our spectacular, undeniably 'genius' writing skills. Like, the logline is your introduction to a person/decisionmaker, so it's a 'first impression,' and it can't be as simple as "A is trying to B but he must first overcome C." It feels like... if you say that to a person, they'll not expect you to then put forward a rich and complex story. Of course, if you're already inside the walls, and you have relationships and proven track records, you could pitch that way and you are already pre-approved in terms of assessments of your intelligence and capabilities. But, for an outsider, unless you have the most sensational 'big concept' to throw at them, going in with the most elemental logline just feels like a 'punt.'

This is so helpful, Karen. That formula really helps me as a novelist to crystalize my various characters, their wants, and obstacles

Really enjoyed this video! Steve Harper's formula for creating a genius logline in just 3 steps is so simple and effective. I'm definitely going to put it to use on my own writing projects. Also, had to check out the book recommendation - A Few Short Plays to Save the World sounds intriguing! Thanks for sharing, Steve!

@1:08 What is your logline formula? this is handy to come back to

Wrong answer. A writer needs a log line because when you submit your script to someone they will have an easier time reading it because the log line gives a quick snap shot of the whole movie. It is not for the writers benefit. It aids the reader because nobody wants to read a script cold, without any idea of what it is about. So when the reader begins reading your work they are already primed and know what to expect.
