    I figured out long ago that I did not want to hardly ever do a basic in Salsa, Rumba, or most of the other dances we've taken lessons in. Our teachers have recognized this and asked me why and my answer is "because it makes me look like a beginner with a poor grasp on my repertoire". So, I transition from move to move, pattern to pattern, and only rarely will I do a basic. Most of the time that I do a basic it is because my partner needs it to get back on the beat. But, here's the thing, dance teachers at the studios we've attended do not teach us how to look smooth and polished. Everything starts with a basic, ends with a basic, and has a basic in the middle. So, I watch videos of you advanced dancers, when you're out at a club, and I try to figure out how you do this move or that move. It involves rewinding the video and watching a move over and over as I try to determine what the leader did at what count in the beat, and how the leader prepped for each part of the move or pattern. Sometimes I am successful in decoding how you accomplish a move, other times I am not. Thanks for demonstrating this. I sincerely appreciate it. It will make a dramatic improvement in the look of our Salsa dancing.

    I've never heard about it but you are right, the overall figure changes quite a lot and looks much more smooth and professional. I am still between a beginner and an intermediate and I think that the usage of both hands derives from the fact that we are not yet sure of our techniques and smoothness and that we feel safer with two hands. However, we must try to start to do it gradually and spontaneously aiming at the next stage otherwise we would remain always at the same level. Thanks for this great tip !!!

    That is the first time I've heard this. Amazed I've never heard it before, seems obvious once explained. I've been going to salsa classes for 2 months though still feel like a complete beginner. I know the basic steps and that's about it. I swear I'm learning more about dance from TH-cam videos and dance partners than any teaching. Not for want of trying either, the instructors always seem to go through complicated sequences a beginner could never pull off on a dance floor where the partner doesn't know what's coming.

    This is the best lesson for a beginner who wants to start social dance. Most beginners learn salsa from a studio nowaday, and the beginner lesssons taught by a studio usally are completely out of touch of street dance. When a beginner goes to a party, he or she (especially he) was shocked to see noboday dance the same way as what a studio have tought.

    yes - from the follower's point of view, I see how that makes it possible for us to dance, to move the body, make shapes with shoulders and let our hands fly ('my soul is in my hands' - quote Renata the Queen of zouk). It's original tip! - amazing not headlined ever before. So good!

    It looks so beautiful! But I feel like the footwork is confusing as a beginner once that straight line is no longer there. I wish I had a dance partner that was already a pro to practice with!

    @danielrosas_official
    I love everything you do. You and Jasmine do such great work. I cant tell you how many moves I have picked up from you.
    If I may add one thing that many do not stress enough when teaching beginners is that EVERY move has: 1) A prep; 2) A lead; 3) A close.
    I have been dancing with the same partner for five years and sometimes I get lazy and she will gently remind me during the dance (or training) that I am forgetting to "prep" her for the move.
    PREP
    LEAD
    CLOSE
    Very important.

    The one-arm-style of cuban salsa gives LA-style more coolness and machismo...

      I wonder what the woman's version of machismo is? Is there a word? Because it gives us freedom to fly too. The 2-arm dance makes us feel like robot parts.
