Brilliant! Clear, concise, to the point and covers all the bases. I've tried this a couple of times before, but never managed to get it working properly. It's the trick with the firewall configuration; the last item you covered, which has foxed me in the past. Thanks very much.
Thank you so much for this tutorial !!!!! I spent countless hours trying to configure the firewall creating and disabling rules. This simplified a lot the process and the machine still secure.
Pete - this was exactly what I was looking for. I had set the FTP site/users up but couldn't allow external connection even though it showed up in the Firewall settings. Thanks Pete - much appreciated.
Thanks for showing that thing at the end. I never would have figured it out otherwise. Also thanks for being to the point, too many videos mess around showing unnecessary stuff which just leads to confusion.
thanks for sharing mate! I needed to quickly setup an FTP server and after messing with Microsoft Help I found your tutorial and managed to have it up and running within 5 mins
Good Job Man!!! Nice simple tutorial on how to. Very useful for someone who dies not know anything about FTP. It is nice start. Marco, this is basic stuff useful for folks who do not know anything about the FTP. They need to start somewhere right ? I am sure you had to lean small stuff first and then to move on to bigger things. So be quiet and let the other appreciate :) If you have nothing good to say, do not say anything at all
Actually, you CAN add FTP afterwards! In the server manager, expand "roles", right click on "Web Services (IIS)", and click "Add Role Services". You can then select FTP.
I think you need to be on a DC, or be running domain admin tools, to add a group to Active Directory! If you haven't got a domain, then you can add a local group, or just add individual users into security properties of the FTP folder later.
+Ken Dedesko Friend need windows key can go link facebook.com/Download-Windows-7-Professional-1493261290979277 to got. My key got here and after i used is works properly.
Another fantastic video by PeteNetLive (in addition to his excellent video on Windows Deployment Services.) Microsoft needs to learn training methods from PeteNetLive, i.e. showing real-life examples rather than adding another high level KB article.
While I find this presentation well structured and concise; I'm horrified that anyone would setup a stand ftp server within the domain/local structure and aghast that someone would allow the administrator credential to access and therefore provide a script kiddie with a means of camping on your ftp server figuring out your administrator password. Secure ftp with a separate user base and restricted access is a much safer solution. Not enough room here to properly respond
Can I use a mapped network drive as my home directory? I map it with full access user but I get "home directory not accessible" error when I try to log onto ftp.
During the setup of the FTP server at the point where you create the ftp site itself, can you use a mapped drive for the physical path? as I am using a S:\ and I am getting an error when I test login saying it cant find the path specified. any ideas? the error is 530 user cannot login, home directory inaccessible
I wonder if you may know why upload/download speed is limited to about ~16 Mbit/s per user by default and if there's any way to turn off this limitation? Thanks!
I can't use dsa.msc! It says "To manage users and groups on this computer, use Local users and Groups. To manage users, groups and computers in a domain, log on as a user with domain adminsitration rights." Can't seem to find the solution. :(
That is great and easy to listen to, BUT how do we provide FTp for guests, surely I don;t want to givemy contractors and builders my admin or any domain user pwd so they can put and get DWG and CAD files? Thx Tim
Very helpful. I'm a software engineer, but had to set up FTP on a Windows 2012 server and could not get remote connections to work. The magic step was about 3:20 in and involved allowing svchost.exe through the firewall. My firewall was showing nice green checkmarks for inbound and outbound FTP but it wasn't working. I'm curious if there's a more obvious way to do this or if there is a downside to allowing svchost.exe, which of course is ALL services, not just FTP.
Hi pete, I've done everything you have listed within your video and when I go to test my FTP site externally cmd gives me the error "unknown host" ... please help
That is great and easy to listen to, BUT how do we provide FTp for guests, surely I don;t want to givemy contractors and builders my admin or ay somain user pwd so they can put and get DWG and CAD files? Thx Tim
It worked pretty well, except that I got "unknown host" when typing in ftp ftp.bulle.se in cmd. Does it have to be a domain name that you have registered on the server, or can you choose whatever address you like there? If it has to be a registered domain, is it possible to connect just with IP instead? Other than this, awesome tutorial! Thanks a bunch!
Thanks for the great video. I also watched your other one on setting up NFS Storage. I managed to setup the FTP site perfectly with AD user security. The only issue is that one or two of my users only require a short logon without typing their full email address but others require their full email address as the logon. I cant seem to get everything to login in the samw way. Any ideas?
Great Video. Works as shown. However, if you could show how to set up Virtual Directories mapped to a folder. I cannot get the virtuals to work. Giving the "user cannot log in, home directory inacessible. As some other users have listed.
great video I have got a dell poweredge 2650 server running windows server 2008 and I can't seem to find the bit at the beginning where you add the group, I click on run and type in dsa.msc and nothing comes up as it says there is not such place to go to can you help me thanks
Hi Pete. Thanks for this and all your video's. They are easy to understand and excellent. Can you tell me how to give external non domain users access to the server Cheers
esta buenisimo, pero tengo un problema ya finalizando cuando entro a DOS y digito ftp ftp.xxx.com me dice que host desconocido, he hecho todo igual, a que se debe??? por favor
This was a great help. Spent hours on Microsoft site and did not get as far as 15 minutes with your video.
Thank you.

of all the stuff on the IIS.net website this was the most simplisitc and easy follow explanation. Cheers!!
Perfect straight to the point video without any intro fluff. Thanks for this.

Never configured FTP on Windows server (actually never worked with servers), this took me right through and it worked. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much. Didn't just learn FTP setup but some fundamentals about Firewall settings. Great Video and to the point.
thanks for sharing mate! I needed to quickly setup an FTP server and after messing with Microsoft Help I found your tutorial and managed to have it up and running within 5 mins
Thank you so much for posting this. I was able to get the ftp server up and running on the first try. Very clear directions.
I used this video to setup a ftpserver on a Window Storage Server and it worked right away. Thanks for sharing!
what a great webcast. very clear, consise and got me up and running in no time!
Thanks! "Allow SSL" instead of requiring it was what I needed. Nice work
Superb. Sometimes the subtle changes are the ones that confuse us the most.
Very good! Direct and to the point of what I needed.
Many of your videos have saved me. Thanks!
It's almost like Sean Bean is explaining this to me. Thanks a lot Pete :D
Good stuff. I needed a quick how-to and found it here.
Thanks for posting this. Nicely done.
I was troubleshooting an issue... god bless u for posting this you made me figure out the problem i was having, it was the firewall issue... -=thanks

Thanx Pete - Helped me setup FTP in 5mins.
AMAZING, had to change a couple things here and there for Security settings but none theless, I am now a Sub!
Very nice video, simple and clean. Not to fast not to slow. Thanks!
Many thanks! Solved my issues in just three minutes!
Actually, you CAN add FTP afterwards! In the server manager, expand "roles", right click on "Web Services (IIS)", and click "Add Role Services". You can then select FTP.
Thanks, adding that firewall program finally let my ftp server work!
Great tutorial. Followed the steps and got it working quickly. Thanks for your help.
Very nice and straightforward. Thanks!
brilliant, I'd done it and left out the svchost allow rule, works a charm now, cheers!
Great demo Pete.
Very well illustrated, thanks

Worked a treat - cheers!
One word to describe this tutorial..."smashing!"
Very clear and concise.
Worked as a charm. Thanks!
useful. followed the video & had my FTP up in 4m41s ... give or take a minute for the FTP service installation.
Nice Video. Succinct and gets you up and running quickly. Well done.

cheers dude, even though these steps i already done made me realize what i did wrong..
nice one pete!!!! Very helpful
quite easy to follow, good job!
I have the same question as others, your server is mapped to that domain name, how do we do that so we can access the folder outside of the network?
While I find this presentation well structured and concise; I'm horrified that anyone would setup a stand ftp server within the domain/local structure and aghast that someone would allow the administrator credential to access and therefore provide a script kiddie with a means of camping on your ftp server figuring out your administrator password. Thx mate, Just what i was looking for :)
What? Microsoft's ftp wizard only went part way in configuring the firewall? Mind blown.
@mowtown75 On the permissions - change it on the FTP folder so that "Everyone" has read access only.
Nice work sir.
thanks pete, very helpful
why do you press both Apply and OK at Active Directory dialog? OK does both Apply and Close dialog anyway
very clearly explained. thank you so much!
Can I use a mapped network drive as my home directory? I map it with full access user but I get "home directory not accessible" error when I try to log onto ftp.

well done, do you have videos on how to set up a dns, web and radius server?
That is great and easy to listen to, BUT how do we provide FTp for guests, surely I don;t want to givemy contractors and builders my admin or any domain user pwd so they can put and get DWG and CAD files? Thx Tim
Thanks! This was outstanding!
If IIS has already been installed without adding in the FTP option, there seems to be no way to add it in (without removing IIS and reinstalling)?
As I've already found out with different setups. Pain in the derriere.
Great tutorial, thank you sir.

What a smoggy ninja.
Thank you very much. It's very good video
hey Pete, why is the ftp fast when I browse with IE but when I use command line to do a LS it take literally 5 minutes to see whats in the directory?
thanks very helpful
Dude...awesome!
Awesome video mate, thanks!

Thank you for this Informative post!!! We are not using AD and it will not allow me to log into it with my windows user information. Any thoughts?
How can I do to access information from another network, another domain and another network segment?

i would like to know as well. did u find a solution?
Hi Pete.
Thanks for this and all your video's. They are easy to understand and excellent.
Can you tell me how to give external non domain users access to the server
Cheers
Errm. Do you mean it is secure to enable svchost.exe for free access? A simpler solution: provide access for port 21 in advanced firewall!
thanks a lot, thanks for your help
did u put dsa.msc into run cause i keep getting a error when i press enter
