  • Bruce’s career in ichthyology began in 1956 with a small aquarium he received as a gift. From that day on he has always had an aquarium nearby. In 1967 he took up scuba diving while working at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan in April 1971, then traveled to Guyana to assist in a study of cichlid fishes. From 1972 - 1975, he participated in a survey of the coral reefs of the Fiji archipelago as a joint project of the Peace Corps and Smithsonian.
In 1975, he moved to Honolulu where he earned his PhD in Ichthyology at the University of Hawaiʻi and started work at the Waikiki Aquarium where he pioneered techniques for culturing corals, and new exhibits featuring nautilus, cuttlefish, giant clams. In 1990, he was appointed Director of the Waikiki Aquarium. He left Hawaiʻi in April 2002 to join the design team to create the world’s largest aquarium in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2011 he retired and returned to Hawaii.
Bruce has published numerous scientific articles ranging from descriptions of new species of reef fishes, to telemetry work on chambered nautilus, to culture methods for corals. He remains active in the defense of the Hawaiʻi aquarium fishery and continues with research on the chambered nautilus.

I haven't seen this video before! How can that be? I remember searching for and couldn't find it. Anyways.. Also, if you look at the number of "likes" you will understand that the majority of the views were most likely from people "indifferent" to the importance of the facts involving the collection of Hawaiian tropical marine fishes. How can 2,800+ views translate only to less than 60 "likes" and 2 "dislikes". The people against collection would give a "dislike" (only 2). The hobbyists didn't even take a time to "like". Thank you Dr. Bruce for such a great job putting this video presentation together. Your time is precious and it's value is tremendous. I just hope the aquarium community would look at the problem in a different way and take a serious approach. Unfortunately we can't change everyone's minds and bring the attention to the problem as we should. This presentation shows how facts can be totally manipulated and things can get out of track. Is there any common sense anymore to any great decision?
The only thing I know is that if the hobbyists don't mind taking it seriously, who will?
Perhaps that is the reason why the opponents won?

A very important and amazing talk. Dr Carlson has the wherewithall to stand up and tell the truth - and back it up with evidence. We need more people like this. Awesome and thank you.

And it is not just in Hawai. In Japan, Taiwan and the rest of the southeast Asia people eat fish that we care for and pay 50-100&$ to have. Now, someone can tell me that eating 3 Naso tangs in one sitting is acceptable but keeping one in the aquarium for many years is not?

I live in SEA and yes this is true. Honestly Hawaii can ban all their aquarium trade fish, that just means more money for us. Thankyou stupid people. You would rather sell 1kg of dead fish for 5$ than to sell 1kg of live fish for 300$ be our guest.

One of the speakers at this years Macna conference started off by feeding baby clown fish as live food for other fish, people like that give our hobby a bad name !

you are talking about Richard Ross right? He does clarify that the clownfish being fed to the dr Seuss fish are culls from a local breeder which were destined to be destroyed anyways due to defects. He has shown that clip in previous years too.
