the EMA is aware of this siren having issues, but they weren't exactly sure what those issues were. I'm unsure what they plan on doing about it. EDIT: as of now, this is the most viewed video on my entire channel, and I've been doing this for 7 years! Thanks to everyone!
Probably not because I tried to go to one of their other sirens and ended up wrecking the car. As of now, it's not trustworthy for a long trip like that, but who knows what the future will bring!
@LayTaw-b3w That's from the solenoids. It's normal for them to clank when they close, but they're not supposed to clank sporadically. One of them has a bad connection that causes it to open and close rapidly sometimes. Normally, you can't hear the solenoids that well, if at all, because of the blower supercharging the Siren to increase volume. Sadly, the blower is also broken, so the siren isn't loud like it should be.
@@SNIXC Heh, at this point we're going on two years now. I may have been absent from my youtube channel, but I never stopped recording sirens so I have a MASSIVE backlog of siren recordings that I still need to upload. I stopped uploading due to personal life issues. I promise that I'll get back to uploading eventually! Close friends of mine keep pressuring me to do so and I don't blame them, lol.
I think it might be the brushes, because it only makes sporadic contact when the horn is pointing about 40° to the right of the camera. The blower is packed with grass, so there may be lots of dirt on the collector rings, too.
@@Superocky4040 That's probably because both of them have broken blowers. They're not very loud without a blower. At least Shamrock is on a higher chopper level.
@Superocky4040 solenoid issues are decently common on these. But to be honest, most of them are doing decent for the fact that all Thunderbolts are 30+ years old (most of them are much older) and most of them are rarely, if ever, maintained. If you can find a place to get the old (possibly lead-based [toxic]) paint removed safely you can probably paint it relatively easily. As for the motor, it might be a bad capacitor. If that's not it, it might be needed oiled. If that doesn't work, there might be a short in the windings. If that's the case, you can probably get it rewound or find a new motor. (West Shore Services may have one if you're looking for an exact replacement.) As for the solenoids. The problem is most likely with the collector rings or brushes. Brushes wear over time and eventually stop making a good connection. Cooldomino has some siren maintenance videos that may be very helpful.

Nice video! sad to see it in that state. It seems the collector ring for the solenoid is dirty thus the intermittent electrical connection at the one spot. I think the blower contactor heater tripped which may be why the blower isn't working.
I looked in my manual and I can't find anything about a contactor heater. i was talking to someone who lives within it's range. @@SirensandThunderbolts1003 Oh. I thought you were talking about literal heater. So, you were saying the blower motor may have overheated and tripped the overload protection?
@@BlueNovaSirens I've told the county about it and I'm not sure what they are going to do about it. On another video of this siren, I heard that they were looking to replace their old sirens. However, I also seen a comment saying that they may keep or fix it. Who knows. It would be neet for it to get a refurb, but I don't really think they are going to do anything about it, as they've done nothing about the solenoid that's been broken for over 10 years.
As of 6/3/2023, I asked someone who lives across the street from it if it went off. They said yes. I also asked if it was fixed yet, and they said no. However, I can't confirm this because I was at another siren. What I can say is it's still up and the blower is still full of grass.
Damn, that thing is practically falling apart. Hopefully it gets fixed rather than replaced. Also, the 126 dB at 100 feet rating is only on axis with the horn. Thunderbolts horns are extremely directional, so when they're on a pole about 40 feet off the ground, most of the sound is going overhead. From my experience, they tend to average around 115 dB from the ground, maybe a little higher. So assuming your reading is fairly accurate, and based on how the decibel scale works, the sound would be approximately 500 to 1000 times more powerful with the blower. 115-87=28, 28÷3=9.3333... let's just round that to 9, you'd actually put 2 to the power of 9: 2^9=512. Needless to say, you definitely gotta hear a properly wired one at some point. They rattle your chest and the ground, especially on the wind-down.
I've never seen it solved this way. Thank you for explaining it. My Db reader probably isn't 100% accurate but it seems to be pretty accurate as the most common maximum "safe" level is 85 and that's right around the level where it starts getting somewhat uncomfortable.
@@J19_vlogger74 Another thing to note is siren dB ratings are usually in C-weighted dB, while most meters default to A-weighted, although some have the ability to read both. A-weighted is based on how we hear sounds, as our ears are more sensitive to higher frequencies. C-weighted is the actual sound pressure.
@@Thunderbolt1000Tfan When my meter powers on, it turns all of the indicators. it shows dBA and dBC but i can't figure out how to make it measure dBC for some reason.
