Friggin excellent! I especially love the passage with the open notes as the solo builds up. That is awesome you figured that out. I havent heard anything else close to getting that ! Nice job!
How does this NOT have more views?? I've been familiar with this song for a long time, but I never knew what this solo looked like, or the chord environment underneath it. Thank you for posting! And you killed it on every little detail, it's great!
Thanks! I don't know, I just don't have that magic viral touch. But I didn't learn this to go viral, or even to post it. I learned it so I can pull out some of this stuff in my own solos
Sorry to be wordy. But one thing I really like about this solo is on the F#/E chord, most people would do the Dream Theater thing and think of this as kind of a Lydian thing. And Allan treated it like an F#7#5, or like a B melodic minor figure. Adds a lot of cool color compared to what is typically done
Great transcription and playing of a difficult solo. What i like best is that you are lost in the moment while playing it. Shows a high level of passion and mastery
@@AndrewGorny there is a documentary on U.K., somewhere on TH-cam. As a test run, ‘In The Dead Of Night’ was already written for the musicians to learn overnight. If I remember correctly, everyone got it on the first take. Also, the reason Allan left U.K. was, he lived to improvise. The group and us fans demanded line for line reproduction for the live performances. He simply did not agree. What a shame!
Ok buddy, it took awhile. I simply do not know how to link this stuff. However, there is a TH-cam channel called ‘The Yak’: Eddie Jobson - Beginnings and the story of the first U.K. Album. 1:16 hrs. Reference to ‘In The Dead of Night’ is 30 min into documentary. Enjoy!
I'm almost positive that is where he actually plays it, but I don't think he taps it. He had like a 5th reach!!! The way I do it doesn't feel very Allan.
The open strings are genius, I covered this song a few years ago but had to use huge stretches further up the neck to try to get it close @@AndrewGorny
I've tried so many different fingerings for bars 21 to 24 and beeing unable to see Allan's play (I don't think he ever cared to play it live note-by-note as album version) - yours seems very convincing!
I actually think it's way up the neck on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th strings, but I can't get it it's too big of a stretch for me!! And yes, there aren't many people left alive from this album. If I meet Bill Bruford I will have some questions about this particular solo. What a way to show Allan to the world with this iconic solo on the first song!
Andrew Gorny - Two years ago, but congrats. It's really accessible even to non-Holdsworth fans, I think. And as a guitarist, it's fun to see what's going on. Holdsworth swore off this solo. If he had a fault it was that he was a poor judge of his own best stuff. Again, great job.
You know what's crazy? It's almost ALL E natural minor. Is this your first time hearing Allan? This was the first solo I ever heard from him back when I was a kid and was immediately like, "okay, this is the best guitarist in the world" and somehow all these years later I was able to play it!
@@AndrewGorny not my first time, but I just couldn't work out what that sound was 😅 I'm on a bit of a binge, especially the first UK record, what a supergroup!
Well done sir..! Nailed it. One of my favorite guitar solos of all time.

@@robertartese808 I think it's actually played in 9th position on the 3rd and 4th strings, but I can't reach it...
So good, great tone, great feel, magical vibes

@@AndrewGorny 🤯 Then there's the rest of us.
@@gregdavidson5898I mean I didn't play it perfectly
Love it! I also really appreciate the transcription of the chord progression, which I've always loved underneath this iconic solo.
This might be the best cover of this solo on the internet.
Fabulous

Brilliant!!!
Good job. I bought this album when it came out in the 70s.
Absolutely amazing, sir!!!❤🎉🎉❤
Wow😮
Good boy!!! Did you know Allan Holdsworth had one day to prepare for this trial track. Nailed it on the first take.
Cool!!! Where did you hear that from???

Amazing!!! You're the man
Hell yeah!
Badass
WTF!!! That was sick man! well done
thanks man! I couldn't get my legato as smooth as Allan in the fast parts. He's a hard guy to play
Best solo I know of!
Impressive !
Excellent!
👍👏
Is it possible to have the tabs ?
Thanks
素晴らしい…👍👍👍👍
I llove this, well done!
Nice trick with the opens strings on 22d bar. I spent so much time trying to tap it in on 9th fret))

@@AndrewGorny you did a phenomenal job! I'm sure Allan would be proud. How did you learn guitar? Did you use any specific method?

Why does this look like it came out in the 90s? Great playing BTW
That's how powerful Allan's influcence on the guitar world was

Where can I get the music for this ? $$
How do you get that sound?
A rookie question: is the tempo in 7/4, 7/8 or 14/4? Don’t really know the diference 😅
No synthaxe?
Hahaha what are you talking about? I can't afford that! I'm a musician, not a lawyer!!!
