Thanks Asia & BJ, for the choice of this interpretation of Angelina, is a honest reaction. She chose a song that isn't easy even for an adult singer with an extended vocal range and incredible belts, yet this little girl, she alone with her mike, no autotune and no interruptions, gets something extraordinarily beautiful and unique, even with the limitations due to age and the voice that has not yet fully evolved. I highly doubt that at the same age as her, Whitney herself would have been able to sing this song this way. 😁❤️
Very good comments, I agree completely - she’s a 13 year old girl putting out a song on TH-cam, while Whitney was a seasoned singer when she sang this. I’ve grown up with this song, and love it to death. But that doesn’t mean that I can appreciate a fantastic 13 year old girl’s version too 😊
And having her own version of this song, is just a good thing. Just like what Whitney did when she sang Dolly Parton’s song…
I think Angelina hit the pocket where she was comfortable. She is such a smart vocalist, never endangering her voice in order to hit notes beyond her range. Angelina's natural voice is so much lower than Whitney's which is what helps give her the beautiful rich, sultry tone we all love so much. Give Angelina a few more years and I am certain she will reach higher notes even though I am very happy to have her sing in her current range.

I think this is a great example of why Angelina is so good now at the age of 15. Many people are afraid and restrictive about everything. They say to themselves: I can't do this, I can't do that, nobody can top Whitney, or my voice is not enough, I'm not talented enough, I'm not ready for the stage yet, what would others think of me, I'll do it later,...
But Angelina on the other hand made progress at the speed of light, why, because she was fearless, she tackled everything, she tried many different songs in many different styles, she didn't care what others think of her, she never thought she wasn't ready yet, she always did what she loved to do, she didn't wait for a 100 takes, she left it at 1-2 takes (quote from guitarists and producers), she performed on stage since she was like 7 years old, ... and now look at her, she performs like a pro at the age of 15 already, because she's got all that experience. And moreover, she proved that age doesn't matter when it comes to moving people with your singing.
Yes, a bit pitchy in 2 spots, but, she's 13. Singing one of the most difficult songs ever. She kicked ass with this.
I hear what you say guys, but I just have to say that for ME, this was an effing insanely good attempt from a 12 year old girl. Especially when you consider what kind of songs she normally sings. And remember also the low-cost of this recording/setup. She just shows us that she's not shying away from trying ANYTHING. And through this tribute she also does just that; paying a tribute to maybe the greatest female singer ever. As a 12 year old I think she HAD to lower the timing of it, too, simply not to run out of breath (she still did that somewhat towards the end). Her lungs aren't by a long shot fully developed yet here.
But this is what makes music so interesting. We come from different places(both geographically,musically and knowledge wise) and we listen with different ears. And luckily, there is no absolute right or wrong.
Now that you have listened to THIS song, may I suggest that you react to "How Great Thou Art" next, just so we can get a REAL feel for her vocal flexibility ?

I listened to the reaction 3 times before catching their message: That at 12 Angelina was no match for Whitney and this particular song. They were NOT being trolls nor were they fair. To say not comparing her then to go on and compare in a negative way is sorta hypocritical.
This came just after someone said she she was in lack of range. She was 13 here.
I think that's fair and since she's 13,she loves Whitney and trying this on for size.Being fearless to find all of her strengths and weaknesses will and are paying huge dividends,especially when working with her record label.Great reaction guys.
Age 13. One take. I love this one. She does some "back phrasing", a jazz technique, which might seem like the timing is "off". It's not supposed to be a Whitney impersonator but rather a Whitney tribute. I do feel you decided how you felt too early into her performance.
She’s singing live. I think she did well changing up the timing. This is a song I normally hate. It’s been done to death. It’s refreshing to not hear someone copying Whitney.
Fun Fact. She sang this song an octave higher than Whitney Houston. Basically we would have hear Angelina sing it in the same octave as Whitney to really make a fair assessment of a comparison. I give her credit for changing an arrangement to that extent and any singer knows that in itself is a talent. Peace.

Enjoyed your reaction believe it or not. One of the things I admire most about Angelina is that she has never been afraid to put herself "out there". There are several videos where she is experimenting with new things and sometimes they're not perfect but it is part of her journey that she allows us to view, warts and all, and becomes part of her life story. Watching her videos from early childhood to now is like watching a mini-series on TV. At the age of 12 or maybe just turned 13 and doing this in one take, I think this is a stunning performance. There are a few live performances that Whitney did of this song where she also struggled. As far as timing, keep in mind that AJ is a jazz oriented singer and jazz notes do not necessarily fall exactly on beat all the time so I believe this was intentional. Asia, you absolutely picked up on what I expected from you as someone who obviously knows music and..... you have a beautiful voice btw! You said she hasn't mastered her high notes....YET. I do believe that Angelina will revisit this song one day and deliver a memorable performance because she never stops trying to improve her skills. Thank you two for continuing this mini-series. lol

I never was a big fan of this song but I thought Angelina did a pretty good job.
For her age, she did a great job! I hope She gets to do this again just to show (because we know) how much she has grown into her voice... Angelina at 13 was every bit as good as Whitney at 29 IMO. Angelina likely recorded this in a few takes, and it is the Sing King "Bodyguard" track version of the song for which Angelina is compared to. Well, you can bet that the Whitney Houston Bodyguard official music video took a massive number of "takes" and no expense was spared on post production to make it sound the finest, and the best engineers money could buy was spent on sound engineering, but Whitney is still a legend and deservedly so. YES! You are absolutely right! Even at her age to had even tried to do a song like this was brave... and heck, why not test out what you are truly capable of when you are the type of singer Angelina IS, and WILL BECOME?! Neither of us in no way meant to make it sound like she just did awful singing this song, BUT we also know she is young.. and even to say that.. I am a grown woman and even on a GOOD DAY, I would still probably struggle to sing this one.... BUT she cant be perfect all the time.. none of us can be.. she is still an angel in my eyes... This is not Whitney's song , it was written by David foster and co writer Linda Thompson for the movie Body Guard for Whitney to sing Whitney and she made it famous with her great voice , but here comes a 12 to 13 year old and sings note for note with Whitney. I realize, just as BJ said . " I can not help but hear Whitney " ,so you two can not but help to want to hear Whitney instead of Angelina. so then comes the criticism becuase it was not Whitney's voice and version . Asia with due respect you your little excerpt was quite pitchy to me.
Whitney with all the technical trappings available to her and the best recording equipment available and Angelina in her own home studio and she is so close to Whitney at times it hard to tell which one is singing. As much you guys have praised Angelina in the past and the stellar covers she has done, to criticize her is a bit over the top .
Being Angelina is so young most people are already ready to claim she can not possibly keep up with Whitney. The visual of Angelina singing will as well have an effect on perception of how well she performed this one , I have heard some say that she looks like she is struggling in some parts, with out the visual that would have never entered into the conversation .
i doubt that Whitney could have sung this note for note( at Angelina's age) to compare with her 29 year old performance.

Thank you Asia and BJ for being honest. I think we all have a natural tendency to want to compare any cover song to the original song and original artist. One thing that I have learned though, is that Angelina never tries to do a karaoke cover of a song....she always puts her own spin on anything she sings. That being said, I think this is a remarkable accomplishment from a 12-13 year old, but, it may and probably does fall a little short of the power of Whitney Houston's voice. That's ok by me. Angelina's body of work for someone not even out of high school is remarkable in itself. Thanks for your reactions, as always...keep up the good work!
You need to grade on context. Whitney was 29 when she recorded this. Angelina just turned 13.....and challenged herself. By the time AJ turns 20, I'd expect a better version.

This was Angelinas tribute to Whithey after her passing. She is exploring her limits here, and the highest belts are strained. That said, it is very beautiful, and the timing is fine by me, AJ is clearly incorporating the jazzy style. I love that you are honest, you are among my favourite reactors
If you listen to Whitney Houston singing this song in one take, at age 29, you will find it worse than this. Point is, this is a hard song to sing in one take. But this is what I like about Angelina. She just lays it out there. Great, good, average, studio mics or cell phone mics, performance, rehearsal or practice here it is. I just enjoy the fact that she has let us in to watch her growth through the years. If you watch the interviews with her guitarist, most of the songs she sings were learned on the spot and we are hearing the 1st or 2nd take.

Can't agree. This is one of her best songs. Absolutely love her version of this. This is one of my favorites from Angelina. Also, she does not try to immitate the original artist. She almost always takes the song and makes it her own. Also they said she had just turned 13 when she this Whitney was like 28 . Plus this is her tribute to Whitney not an immitation. This is the first time I have her her degraded on this performance. Almost all voice coaches I watched have loved this. I only listened to this 300 or 400. hundred times and love it. This was very disappointing for me. Sorry !! . Over fourteen million views. Someone evidently liked it as well as me.

Interesting. I can honestly say, after comparing Angelina's version to Whitney's (which I've done on multiple occasions in the past, and again just now - and note, I'm talking about Whitney's original studio version, not any later live versions), I think Angelina sang most of the song better. Not _all_ of it, but most of it. Angelina's vocal arrangement is much more intricate (and therefore more interesting) in the quieter parts; by comparison, Whitney's original seems almost robotic. And Whitney is suprisingly "non-committal" in some of the high belting parts. Angelina seems to be really going for it every time (whether you think she "makes it" or not), whereas Whitney sometimes goes for it and sometimes not so much. Obviously, one big difference is that Angelina's voice doesn't naturally go as high as Whitney's, so she has to use more "constriction" to hit the high notes - I guess it could be considered a form of vocal fry, except without the raspiness - whereas it's much easier for Whitney (mostly… but keep reading). But then it also seems like Whitney isn't doing as much with those parts as she could.
I *strongly* recommend that you listen to Whitney's original again. You might find, as I have on many occasions with this and other songs AJ has covered, that it's not exactly like you remember it. One point in particular that shocked me when I first noticed it: compare how the two singers sing the highest note in the song (the highest note Angelina sings, anyway), which occurs on the word "my" in the last appearance of the line "Stay in my arms if you dare" (specifically, at 12:42 in this reaction video). Angelina sings it strong and clear, and very "confidently" (not rushed or "clipped" at all). But when Whitney sings it, she just kind of swoops quickly up and back down, spending almost no time at the highest pitch (she actually does that every time she sings that line), and her voice actually _cracks_ a bit. I guess you could chalk that up to "the emotion she's putting into it", but you've got to admit, for that one note, at least, Angelina sang it much cleaner. Very surprising.
I suppose I should explicitly state that I think Angelina does appear to be "near her limits" in this song, as far as high belting goes. And she has some problems near the end where she seems to be running out of breath a bit. So, it's not 100% perfect, by any means. But at the same time, I don't think it's anywhere near as problematic as you were describing. So, there ya go. [grin]
One needs to hear her sing this song several times before you can understand that this is Angelina's version not Whitnys'. It gets better everytime I hear it.
"I don't want to hold it back again" is not correct" "I will hold it back again" is correct They wrote it WRONG for her but she sings it better than Whitney, it's richer and more soulful too.

one take alone at 13 with a microphone and track, no splices or mix I'll take it. Whitney had a gift and her career and recordings were groomed by one of the top producers in music but she threw it away on drugs
I suspect that some people heard the song title and the name of the great Whitney Houston, immediately had the soundtrack or the album with Whitney in their ears. An elaborate production in a high-end studio with an army of professional musicians and who knows how many takes were necessary (certainly not a ONE take like Angelina). Then Angelina (13y) are compared to Whitney (29y), really? There are two great mashup videos with Angelina and Whitney. My suggestion to listen once may change some opinions. ✌️😎✌️💯 *AJ* 💯👣

It's not that it's a bad one. More that people want to compare her to Whitney. You just can't. Fortunately the girl can flat out sing and no one will take that away. From what I recall when this song was covered by her, she wanted to show she could sing different styles to people critiquing her. So she sang this one. I do agree with others who say she shouldn't have tried to cover this one, especially at the time she did. Her voice wasn't ready for this back then. She may never be because of her style.
Honestly is allowed but this was a sustained attack,not once do I recall any credit/allowance as to ANGELINAS age 12.no this was a Whitney fan disgruntled and annoyed that a child could do so well performing her idols best song.
My hat's off to you, cause I thought she did great, but I am by no means musically discerning. This is one of my favorites, because this video was revealing that she had pipes I didn't think she had, and that was shocking.
Find me a version of Whitney Houston singing this live where she sounds half as good as Angelina does here. At 29 Whitney needed a full production team editing her vocals, and I still think Angelina with a backing track and a mic sounds better at 12/13. I think Whitney Houston was a great vocalist, but she is no Angelina Jordan. The versatility, the depth, the texture, the emotion, all make Angelina the greatest vocalist in the history of mankind.
I know other people's opinions may be different, but I never really cared for other's opinions, whether they agree with me or not. I will say it with my dying breath: No one compares to Angelina, and no one ever will.

agrees with you. At 12 years old we have found her limit. Whitney did this song at age 29. So i will give her a pass at this time. Still love her sound more then most. Plenty of time to grow. :)
This is addressed to all the Angelina "Angels" out there. Anyone who feels hurt by the way Asia described Angelina's performance, it is absolutely justified. I'll tell you why. The song started and Asia was already shaking her head and frowning. At the first break at 3:45 she said, "Are you ready for me?" She continued till 7:10 with a barrage of unflattering remarks. Then the frown continued and she appeared very disappointed in Angelina's performance. Then from 9:10 to almost 12:30 more negative remarks including, "She isn't able to feel the note!"
Angelina's "Angels", by this time (if they were still tuned in) had just about enough!
Now, believe it or not, I want to give credit to Asia for her input. Her "opinions" were one's we have heard from many other reactors and they were basically fair but negative, nevertheless.That would have been acceptable. But she kept it up and kept it up and that's when we couldn't take anymore. It was like a fighter in the ring against the ropes and somebody was pounding away at him. The fight ended and of course the winner went over to the beat up fighter and told him he loved him.
If any reactor has something to say about any performer which could be labeled as negative criticism they should be able to get their message across and "let it go!" The audience will get it (and probably agree). So, in the end result, Asia's error in judgment was to not "let it go" and then praise her for the effort she put forth which was tremendous.
In closing, I really enjoy Asia and BJ. They interact very nicely and they have a great sense of humor. I'm not going anywhere and I will continue to listen to them. I sincerely hope Asia understands that her "Angels" regard Angelina as family (daughter, sister, grand daughter and, yes, great grand daughters) and "we" are protecting and defending her to the umpth degree. We were hurt and it was a reflex action. On behalf of all the "Angels" who were bothered by this "situation," let us all give Asia the benefit of the doubt and wish her and BJ all the love we can give them. And, we sincerely hope they understand where we were coming from and they can absolutely feel comfortable with us as we all look forward to some wonderful moments still to come watching Angelina develop her talents more and more and continue to take pride in what a loving and caring person she is.
IMO this is the most underrated performance of Angelina. After a reactor dared his listeners to go and listen to other renditions of this song and see if they are better, I listened to over 30 women singers cover this song. Not one sounds better. Said that, I know Angelina's rendition here is not perfect but take in to consideration a lot of factors like her age, it was outstanding. I had listen to 2 life performances of
Whitney , I am a fan of her for years, I was disappointed because it was not so good as her singing in the movie where it was not a live performance but perform in a studio for the movie.

Asia and BJ: Your critique was honest and yet gentle. Several vocal coaches have articulated criticisms similar to yours. Even I noticed where she doesn't quite have the horse power to hit the notes that way she wants to. Angelina did not do this just to do it, she had some sour comments about her not being able to do high notes and belt, so this was just a way to silence the critics way back then. One day she will nail this, but I am not sure that she will do this again because she have nothing to prove anymore.

A lot of people seem to be upset about their critique. There are a lot of Whitney fans that will never say anyone can sing this song better than her. So here is my unsolicited opinion. I was 31 when this song was released. I thought it was a very pretty song. Whitney was very clear and crisp in her recording. She hit the notes like she was supposed to. It was very technical. It did not touch me at all. I list songs in 3 categories: Songs you listen to, songs you dance to, and songs you feel. And although Whitney's version is pretty, it was Angelina's that made me feel. She put that bluesy sound in. The Greatest Love Of All by Whitney is the one that made me feel. For me, when Whitney sings it is like a bright sunny day. When Angelina sings, it's like sitting on the porch, in a swing, during a rain storm. I prefer the rain. To each his/her own.
You have to remember Whitney version that we all know was a studio production for release as a commercial product to create revenue for the record company. This was a 13 year old doing it as a tribute to an idle of hers. Probably only a first or second effort by her. Your right, this song is not in her wheelhouse but you've got to give her a big attagirl. Shes got a lot of guts, she knew better than anyone this was a big undertaking and she pushed her boundaries.
Thanks for reacting to Angelina's 'Tribute to Whitney Houston'. I have to disagree with your criticisms of Angelina's performance though. You forget to take into account that Angelina had just turned 13 when she did this - in one take with no studio enhancements of any kind. She simply went for it with a half decent sounding backing track, using a half decent vocal mic - and most likely half decent recording equipment operated by family members as well. AND she didn't try to copy Whitney like other singers do, she never does that with her covers. You always get Angelina's interpretation. Whitney's original hit at age 29 was heavily doctored by top professional recording engineers on the basis of many vocal takes, section by section - using cutting edge studio equipment and techniques to remove pitchiness, plosives and other errors. Your negative comparison between the two makes little sense.

I think you are right. This is not her best, although it has a lot of good parts. Even if Angelina's voice is fully grown she would still have a lower tessitura than Whitney. Whitney would never have been able to sing as low, deep and warm as Angelina. Or sing in so many different styles with so many 'voices'. Maybe the only reason Angelina recorded this is out of admiration for Whitney and maybe to prove that she actually can belt!
She did a wonderful job belting in 'It's a man's world' with the Norwegian Army orchestra. A must see!!!
By the way: did you know that Whitney sang 'I have nothing' a whole note lower in many occasions, especially later on? Angelina chose for the original key!

Singing is a lot like playing any kind of wind instrument, it’s all about the breathing. While this may not be her very best performance, I don’t think it was a bad performance. If anything she sounded a little out of breath, especially towards the end of the song. Usually her demeanor is so calm and collected. This song really pushes her to the limits. Maybe there was a little anxiety about hitting the high notes that threw her out of her rhythm thus causing her breathing to not be where she needed it to be. Having said that, I don’t think this song is too much for her. She just needs to wood shed it a little bit and she’ll be fine.

I love Whithey, who does not, but I think you are confusing non-comparable concepts. The version that we all know was made in the studio with all kinds of tricks and arrangements to make it perfect. I recommend that you look for live performances by Whitney of this song, you can see the enormous difference with the studio recording, and of course, she did not reach the octaves of AJ not even close. She did this as a tribute to Whitney, and didn't change it like she would if it hadn't been a tribute. For a 13-year-old to try to emulate a 29-year-old Whitney and do it justice was a monumental task. You can hear her straining for some of the high notes, but overall an excellent effort. I'm sure she'll do it again at some point in her career, and as evidenced by her recent cover of Adele's "All I Ask" her voice is maturing.

Since she is following a packaged track, which is where her timing is coming from, I don't understand the comment. What do you mean by her timing being off?
FYI: when this first came out, I first afraid that she had succumbed to pressure to be more current, but than I figured out she was just answering criticism that, while she was universally recognized as having a good voice, she couldn't belt it out like "real" singers do. I agree with your criticisms and Angelina would probably too. But she was sure testing her limits and did a great job. I particularly loved the cover. I have heard many artists covering this song that can reach the higher notes better than Angelina did in this one, but they don't sound like they are unique or they don't give us so much feeling. On the contrary: Whitney Houstons precision does not give me the chills I get when Angelina starts singing. But I can agree that Angelina here might be pushing her voice out of her comfort zone with a little more stress and loss of breath control than usual. But why not? Needless to say, Whitney had advantages, in physical vocal maturity and life experiences. Asia, you're right. In Angelina's attempt to make it her own, it left her out of step. It's the best rendition I've ever heard, but she's no Whitney, at least at thirteen. After hearing "All I Ask", Angelina may be finally knocking on Whitney's door. Cheers!

Angelina is very young here and as always she is testing herself. She is never afraid to try something different and difficult to improve her abilities. I don't think Whitney herself would have improved this performance at this young age. She is learning very quickly. You can see the improvement from 7 to 9 years old, from 9 to 11, from 11 to 13, and now at 15 years old.

If anyone has a link to a live Whitney performance where she even attempts these high notes, please post it. I have watched many of Houston's performances of this song and none of the live ones show her hitting the high notes. As for timing, that must be a personal preference b/c I really like the way Angelina uses her jazz background to create those spaces. It creates expectations and makes the song more interesting. It was interesting watching and listening to your reactions and I really appreciate you giving your honest opinions instead of trying to pander to us fans. TOTALLY AGREE.... You both articulated exactly how I was feeling. First, as the song plays my mind is putting Whitney into my ears..... Second, The way that she tries to make it unique by a slight skipped beat or the rephrasing of words throws off the timing for me and the rhythm of the song flow.
There's no denying her talent but there's a reason this is one of those untouchable songs.
We all have very high expectations of Angelina, because she consistently blows us away. This was not her best effort. But IMO she did a decent job for being a 13 year old. I would like to point out that Angelina as a Jazz singer uses back phrasing quite a bit in this song in order to make it her own.
good analysis from your part. This song was the first song where Angelina had to deal with very high notes. There was a sense that she couldn't go that high at all. This song erase all doubts. Considering that she was 13 years old, of course she was not going to match 100% of the time on those high notes. But she does an amazing job with the feeling of the song. Most fans don't expect Angelina to scream on every song. I prefer vocal fries and runs a lot more.
Hi A&B, thanks for your honesty. Angie did a little back phrasing in this & as you know she was 13 when filmed. Remember when WH recorded it at 29 yo woman & she had multiple takes & the high notes she really didn't do a lot in concert. I think you see/hear that in her live concerts. This was a taxing song especially for a 13 yr old. But Angie brings us in to see how she grows & her process in this adventure she's on. She still made it her own & English is her 3rd language not her 1st. Plus Angie's tone/timbre is very different that WH & a she's a lot younger. So I feel that even before Angie's voice matures (like WH was when she sung it) she will knock it out of the park. For I believe when Angie's voice matures in around 10+ yrs, Angie will be the one that people will try to emulate her, people & look back on these younger years & wonder how. Plus she singing from a track & not doing all her own, for this was a tribute to WH. (Keep in mind how would you of sounded when you were 13.) First of all, thanks for an honest reaction. I think deep inside - If we're honest - we all felt something a bit unusual for our Angel at some of those difficult moments in the song. Having said that... I believe Angelina was a Whitney Houston fan, and the song was a tribute to Whitney Houston more than a cover. To me, it was good to see Angelina step out of her element a little bit. She always aims for the moon. Everyone understands that "I Have Nothing" is a very difficult song to sing... and is even more difficult to make more perfect. In live performances, even Whitney Houston could not do that. We have so much to look forward to with Angelina!!!
Also remember her vocal cords aren't fully developed. But she did do it better justice more than most!

Asia, appreciate your honest criticism of this performance even though I don't agree. But your ears are your own truth. I've listened to Angelina's version more than my fair share of times and think that at 13 years old she crushed it. Angelina's natural jazz instincts make her want to play around with with the timing and negative space, which when compare to the original is different. But the reason we love her is because her she presents us with something unique and dynamic. Whitney had the choice of picking her own key to sing in, Angelina was boxed in with the backing track key. Also if you listen to Whitney's later performances she sings this song at least one whole step down. Either way, love your reactions and opinions and can't wait for your next Angelina review!
IMHO its even better than the original. Even Whitney struggled with the high notes in this one - you clearly hear that in her official video - she actually doesn't go as high as Angelina. And Angelina is better in the soft parts. Whitney struggles even more in her live performances.

Great reaction, I respect your honesty a lot. I tell you my experience with this cover with Angelina: the first time I heard it (as I am a musician) the details sounded dissonant but I liked the interpretation of it. Then I was learning incredible things and loving this emulation that she did. I learned that Whitney Houston sang horrible (with defects) always this live song. I learned that the only time it sounded was well when I get into more than 5 segments (that made me understand that the song was a trap made so that all the singers who would like to do would sound badly compared to Whitney Houston. Then I started reviewing covers in TH-cam of this song and I realized that all were covers ie with voice and colors tones absolutely different from those of Whitney instead Angelina emulated to perfection the color of her voice. It tells the legend that David Foster, the creator of The song was present at that time.
