  • "Highway of Heroes", was co-written and co-produced by The Trews and Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar) and was inspired by the 2006 death of Captain Nichola Goddard from The Trews' hometown of Antigonish, NS. Canada's Highway of Heroes, is the section of the MacDonald-Cartier freeway named to honour those who have sacrificed all in service of country.
You can purchase "Highway of Heroes" world-wide exclusively via iTunes. bit.ly/dbVi6d
Net proceeds from sales will benefit the Canadian Hero Fund ( www.herofund.ca ), an organization that assists the families of Canadian military personnel through academic scholarships.

When I was about 12 years old, I played runescape with a Canadian Soldier. I played with him and talked to him almost every day, he never minded talking to a little kid and he gave that time of my life a lot of happiness. That February he got shipped out to afghanistan. He said he would be gone for months. In that time I stopped playing. I never knew his name. I still think about him every year around this time, wondering if he was one of the ones to go down that highway in a casket. Wherever you are buddy, I hope you found peace and happiness whether its on earth or in heaven or wherever you go, cause you're a hero to me and the country and you deserve it.

My Father came within a hair's breadth of making the trip down the 401. He Commanded a Leopard C2 Mexas. They hit an IED outside of Kandahar, and the ammo box for both the main gun and the Coaxial Machine Gun cooked off.
His Driver, Gunner, and Loader weren't so lucky.
I was 3 years old at the time. The first time I ever truly realized how lucky I am to have him was during a trip to a museum in Ontario 9 years later. We came across about a third of an armored corps headset. Being a naive 12 year old, I of course started questioning, not recognizing how uncomfortable my father was seeing items from Afghanistan layed out on that display.
"I wonder if that guy made it home."
    "Max, that was my headset."
To *all* the troops who served and continue to serve in the Canadian Army, and every Army the world over thank you for all you do for us. To all the less glorified positions, like supply, maintenance, even the cooks, thank you for making sure that armour was strong enough to hold out against a case full of hesh cooking off. Thank you for making sure our troops are kept well fed, well supplied, and healthy.
And to the Ambulance drivers, Military or Civilian, the paramedics who go with them into objectively hostile environments, and the doctors who work at the exclusion of all else to help their patients: *Thank you for making sure my father made it home.*

I'm a high school teacher in Southern Ontario and we are pretty close to a stretch of the highway. Today marked my sixth year in a row showing my students this video (and Leonard Cohen reciting "Flanders Feilds") and talking to them about the people who we owe our lives to.
I am always uplifted by how engaged they get in the song, it's lyrics, and the video clips. Today when I said "we have 5 minutes left in the period, are there any more questions you want to cover before dismissal?" They were shocked that the period had flown by so quickly, that went to show just how much discussion this song generated.
I haven't served, but I have family and dear friends who have. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for this song and this video. It is a precious key to unlocking the hearts and minds of the next generation and I will use it every year that I have the privilege to be in a classroom.

Yea, Canada is no better at a FUNDAMENTAL LEVEL, I can see ur reason for opting out as a decent explanation. Without the STATE and the MILITARY, u, me and all canadians may not be as capable of defending our nation and freedoms [Speech, Financial, Medical, Economic, Human-Rights, Personal, e.c.t.] from those who wish war on basic human rights and freedoms, so U could talk shit about the STATE and the MILITARY. However the STATE and the MILITARY are needed to some extent for protection/management of a country against those who mean to invade/harm u, me, and all canadians. In a historical sense, humans banded together into villages/towns/cities for preservation/protection against invasion/war. So let me put a question to u, Would u rather fight everybody in a military-style fight singlehandedly or Would u rather have an armed-force to back u up in a military-style fight?

The first time I ever heard this song it was on the radio in the car when i was driving between Kingston and Gananoque on the 401, I didnt know at that time that that was the day that Cpl Nathan Cirillo was being transported from Ottawa home to Hamilton, I knew something was going on because of all the cars lining the shoulder and the overpasses and shortly after this song came on i saw the cop cars and hearse pass me going the other way and i became overwhelmed with emotion. Such a beautiful song with so much emotion behind it. Thank you to anyone who has ever served this great county.

the 401 runs through my City, and its a somber sight to see the procession of police cars and a hearse followed by more police cars.

It disgusts me that there are 86 people at this point who dislike this video. Our soldiers, whether you agree with their deployment or not, represent our country and the people who live here. I for one could never look at a soldier who has given their life in poor light. I wear blue, not green, and thank soldiers every day for the life they have chosen. Although some day I may die on the home front, serving law and order, they have passed while far from those who love them. They are true heroes and I think of them every day when I drive on the Highway of Heroes.

I’m an American infantryman and we may give each other shit, but I want to thank our Canadian brothers for standing with us. This weekend is our Memorial Day weekend when we honor our fallen and I’ll definitely be having a few shots in honor of our allies!

Do not live in Canada, but my grandmother came to the US in the early 30's from Montreal. She had so pride where she came from ,she shared her love of Canada with me .Toronto has become my home away from home. Highway of heroes always brings tears to my eyes for family that served in Canada and family that served in the US thank you for sure a wonderful song

this song gets me everytime, can't help but tear up. i'm thankful for those who gave up their lives, to help keep us safe, may god bless families who lost loved ones, and may god bless those who are still fighting. in a few years, i'll be out in the battlefield.

Saw you guys in concert at the Delaware State Fair in Harrington Delaware. This was the last song you played. I play it for everyone I know that has ever served. Great tradition for honoring your fallen heroes. God Bless.
