So agreed! Actually saw him in person near my house when he filmed; 'Attack Of The Cybermen' in 1984 after the 21st season was finished. We soon had the show filming down our road (as a small boy that was ungodly epic) But think, he knew the multi-colored suit he was force to wear by JNT, was kinda super weird and wrong for the character. Given the looks we were all giving him as fans of the show!
True but at the same time I kind of prefer the garish costumes. For all their failings of fashion(the scarf, celery, the cape, the neutral color riddler gitup) they were iconic to the characters and helped distinguish the doctors. Post war the doctor’s clothes just kind of blur together at least for me.
The Sixth Doctor’s coat is very… distinct, while this black suit is more serious. If I’m being frank, they should’ve given him the Blue version of his coat from the very start. The perfect balance.
A tasteless personality doesn't mean destroy the main character in his own show however. Even as kids we knew the suit was all wrong, Jonathan Nathan Turner shouldn't have been the main showrunner for the series during the 1980's. Its no wonder BBC head Michael Grade at the BBC wanted to fire Colin Baker and replace him or end the series outright. Although that was another ugly and personal matter given Colin had married his ex-wife so it was kind of personal between them. JNT only stayed on to keep Dr Who going, but as a writer and showrunner wise? He was all wrong for the show in retrospect and had way too much power in what he was doing. Baker had a multi-coloured suit on and later on McCoy wore too many damned 'Question Marks' on his 7th Doctor? (shrugs).

I agree that JNT shouldn't have continued. (I met him back in the 1980s along with Colin and Tom. He didn't look happy then.) Michael (the Putz) Grade hated Dr. Who and was looking for any excuse to cancel the show. He's still alive (78 according to Wikipedia).Grade said he hated science fiction which is why he wanted to get rid of it and only produce "British" (i.e. snobby) shows. I hope he's having apoplexy over the fact that the revived show has been so popular *worldwide*, and now SONY PICTURES has allied themselves with BAD WOLF PRODUCTIONS to produce Doctor Who, which should make it even better.
My honest take is that the black suit doesn't have enough personality for a Doctor costume. He should have worn the suit, and occasionally worn a bright technicolour coat over it. Then he can look dignified when he wants to, but we still get some of the good silly eccentric 1000 year old man.
Baker wanted something more akin to 9; muted black leather outfit, similar to something out of the Matrix. A departure from the extroverted loudness of previous Doctors, with the somewhat darker take he'd intended.

Ik people really don’t like the Multi coloured coat 🧥 but I actually do it’s really cool 😎 I like the different colours as it reflects the changes in the Doctors personality the colours have never bothered me as much as it does for others. I like when the doctor wears a big long coat as opposed to the simple normal blazer. The doctor has always has a peculiar sense of style xx
Agreed, to me it's all just part of the charm. The Doctor has often been ostentatious if not entirely outlandish with his fashion, and the 6th is just the most outlandishly ostentatious of them all. To me at least, taking away the 6th's mismatched technicolor coat would be like taking away the 4th's scarf. Both are rather ridiculous garments, but both are what give the respective incarnations their iconic look. That said, it is still a shame Colin wasn't even allowed to have any input or options on his costuming.

From what I remember hearing, Colin Baker really wanted black Edwardian velvet, sorta like Jon Pertwee's Third Doctor, which wold have been much more "doctor-ish" than the suit they gave him in that clip.

The original concept was always as someone slightly 'Victorian era' looking, hence the top coat of Smith and Capaldi just that little bit different from everyone else.
I think the black suit is a perfect attire, for Dr 6 and been clad in a black suit trousers, waistcoat, white shirt, black tie and a jacket was awesome in millions and billions of ways and IMO Dr 6 really would have looked better wearing a black three piece suit trousers, waistcoat and jacket than the awful outfit he was alloted to wear during his short time on television.
My opinion would be to merely colorize the colored mess into black and white, and the blue chains on evidently two pocket watches be made silver. This would make it have a weird look with the flying thin tie and yet more dignified. I also do not get why a previous doctor had celery on the lapel.

Yeah he looks like a pallbearer here. It might work if they did away with the waistcoat and had a long flowing overcoat or cape.

I think he should have worn this, but added the cat badges he wore on his actual outfit. It would have had just the right of quirk that way.
