People that regularly park their cars under trees listen to Scotty! Best bet is to avoid sunroofs all together. 99% of cars I see on the road with sunroofs have them closed, even on perfect weather days. They are a waste of money and always end up causing problems.

I owned a 96. Make sure that if you use the rear wiper washer, it sprays. In my case I couldn't figure out where the washer fluid was going. The rubber hose connector runs down the rear most driverside pillar. (Where the spare is.) Some fluid would get the rear trunk area wet, and some fluid ended up trapped in the rear quarter panel, short story long, i reconnected the hose and drilled a 1/4 inch hole from underneath and found the missing fluid

I don’t mean to be a jerk but, I used to install sunroofs and full power moon roofs aftermarket and factory sunroofs. There’s a drain hose that goes down the A pillar on the passenger side. They develop moss and scum in them. The reason is because they are made from clear hose. Light gets in and mossy sludge develops. That track around the sunroof only drains one way. No need to mess with all 4 ways. J/s Thanks for all your help Scotty! You have saved my wallet many times.

I’ve heard that if you use pressurized air, it can blow the plastic tube off the nipple that it connects to, and then you have a major problem, and that the weed wacker line is the best method. You can also purchase a small brush on a flexible cable. I purchased one of those brushes, but I found it was too big and required considerable force to push it through. I abounded that process when I tried it because I thought it might push the tube off.

I have learned so much from Scotty but I do want to mentioned that, at least for Subaru Outback sunroofs: (a) you do not want to use compressed air as you may lodge a solid piece inside the tube (similar to what Scotty said about not flushing the transmission fluid). instead, use some Q-tips to clean around the opening (b) soft electrical wire will not push through several bends, they will just bunch up; instead, using a long piece of grass trimming plastic line, making sure to melt the beginning end to dull any sharp edges. (c) it is extremely difficult to get to the rear drain tube openings; you will need to use a long tube (think of a long straw) to guide the trimmer line

If your sunroof leaks replace the seal. Drains are there for backup not for normal water flow. Seals last only about 5 years and less if you open it a lot. Use weed wacker string and cut off a 7 foot piece and clean them once you replace the seal. It should not leak at all if it's good.

My problem with the door is you have to pull the gasket away from the door frame and the Water Runs Out the weep holes.. I think it's designed to drain with the door closed but mine only drains when I open it and pull the rubber away from the metal frame of the bottom of the door

Use solid electrical wire so that you aren't just pushing the debris further in and just moving the clog.

my drain tubes were fine, just clogged in the floor pan. snatched some rubber plug out of the bottom of the car, and let the gallons of water loose. no more wet carpet, no more moldy smell. now i just don't have a sunroof, so life is that much easier

5:08 Tell that to GM. I think they got the memo by 2014, but in 2011 their Silverado and Impala just blinks the A\C light instead of allowing the A\C to be on in the winter and the windows fog up really bad. It's very annoying. My Mom has a 2014 Malibu and I can use it's A\C all year round.

My 2005 Toyota Avalon had the sunroof drain lines plugged, and for 2 years, we couldn't figure out where the water was coming from. The water ran down inside the B-pillar, without our knowledge and our car smells like the NFL locker room with a basket of stinky socks! NOW I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO GET RID OF THE ODOR!

if the hose is clogged, the air pressure can pop the hose off the drip tray, then you'll have to drop the headliner to fix it properly. Better plan is try pouring water down each. If the water backs up and doesn't drain, run weed trimmer line down the hose and knock out the obstruction.

yeah that's always been true with sunroofs especially when the vehicle is older like a classic/antique car like for example a 1974 Cadillac Eldorado coupe or a 1975 Porsche 911 930 turbo targa top. the first manual transmission car my mum ever drove was a silver 1978 Porsche 911 turbo which had a 3.3 L flat 6 water cooled engine funny enough her 2012 Hyundai Azera has an engine with the same displacement except in 60 degree V set up ironically they're roughly the same gross weight around 6,000 LBs and the Porsche is 2 Ft shorter 14 Ft as opposed to the Hyundai's 16 Ft similar to a modern day Toyota Camry though the Width and height of a Camry is almost identical though their sales were no where near each other in 2012 the Azera sold less than 10,000 units that year while the Camry sold 405,000 units the best selling in its class for the 15th non consecutive year at that time and now 26 of the last 27 years the best selling American sedan in its class is the Chevrolet Malibu with 130,342 units sold in the US in 2023 which was #3 in the class. mind you January 2024 sales are up 32% from January 2023 to 22,061

Love your videos, but have to question one statement??? I have had sunroofs on every car I have ever bought, and I am 66 years old!! Never have I had one leak??? I drive every car I like to Death, and then replace it. The only thing I do is once a year is wipe the seals down with a paper towel and window cleaner. Then WaLa no leaks!!! Never knew about drains?? But I do only buy Top End Honda's, Lexus, and little else...

Open sunroofs suck all they do is make a lot of wind noise. A stationary one with a sliding shade more practical 😑

Don't stick a wire down the sunroof drain tube. The drain has a rubber tube that runs through the body of the car and will pull off from the bottom of the sunroof.

If you've never cleaned any of these before, maybe don't start with the compressed air, because you might just compact a clog and shove it further into the drain system. Try a piece of wire first. Also, if water or snow is deeper than the lowest part of your vehicle's airdam / front bumper, go about 25 MPH or slower, because that water or snow is likely to catch on underbody plastic panels, the exhaust system or heat shields, oxygen sensor on the exhaust, etc. And it can rip that stuff up and/or right off the car.
