The "star" symbols are for weapons that have extra upgrade levels so it's Common -> Common * -> Epic -> Epic *, etc.... These apply to the Assault Weapon and the Dragon weapons.
Also yes, Contract, is an item meant to apply specifically to the Contract Killer character as a means to offset the 200% materials dropped bonus they get.

Contract feels like it should be epic, not legendary. Compare it to Anvil, which has no downside and gives armor once you get maxed weapons.

There's a character called Contract Killer that gets 200% material bonus and starts with Contract as a means to help balance the OP character (SPOILER: it doesn't) :)

I think the tradeoff with Anvil vs Contract is supposed to be tgat contract is cheap (it recycled for 6). But like with Explosive Turret that just makes you sad when you get it from the boss.

Do not buy Chomp. The dragon character says that they can't buy weapons, but actually it's a characteristic built into the weapon Chomp and not the character itself so buying it will keep from any other weapons showing up in the shop. Conversely this also means you could recycle Chomp as the dragon character and do weapon upgrades in the shop (making the character very OP).

It's not "-5 money per enemy", it's "-5 harvesting per enemy"?????
That's insane!
It would compound so much during a run, it would mean that every enemy left alive on a wave would take 5 money EACH WAVE until the end of your run, and that's just gonna grow!

I'm guessing that the contract is more or less free in the shop, given its effect and it only recycling for 3 materials. Makes it a lot more appealing. Anvil still way better though.

there was a melee weapon (some kind of club) that starts with a 60% lifesteal scaling. that would probably be the weapon to go for :) you just haven't unlocked it yet.
edit: nvm you had it. it's the boneclub but this character can't start with it

An interesting difference between Anvil and Contract is that Anvil incentivizes pushing all of your weapons to purple tier, therefore spending more money, whereas Contract incentivizes you not spending money on weapons since you are essentially spending the money through the harvesting loss

Exactly, Reto getting the contract as his "free" legendary was very unlucky. Finding it in the shop makes for a more interesting tradeoffs.
