I am so sorry that a brilliant, humane, intuitive senior police officer lost his career because he failed to tick a few management boxes that effectively give the victims fewer rights than the perpetrators. Hopefully, no one will forget that he also got a serial killer off the streets. All the best Steve Fulcher. You are a bloody hero in my eyes.

Well said ! he didnt do it for the wrong reasons he did it for the right reasons, to try and bring someones daughters home alive ! he should not have had to suffer because of that, that is a miscarriage of justice in itself. if it had been their daughters missing they would have welcomed him to help in the same way, yet he was punished for doing whats right, i dont get it, that needs to be changed. i agree he is a hero in my eyes as well,
I do believe there are more victims just by what he said in the last interview, dont come back to me later with this, with that, in other words when you find out i killed others dont come ask me, well tough, just admit what you did, who you did it to and where they are then.

Agreed,not to mention that it's not an officers job to make sure you get an attorney, it's up to the suspect to request one full stop.
A guy confesses to a murder 10 years earlier, having pinpointed a murder site under investigation.
He takes the officer to the exact spot, remains are found yet it gets thrown out on trivial grounds.
That is beyond ridiculous.

These laws should be reviewed. If someone is literally offering up evidence after they have said..."I'm not speaking to you, I KNOW MY RIGHTS" clearly shows he knew he didn't have to say anything but decided to ramble on about a whole other crime. This is not the same as someone who is being bullied by police and doesn't know their rights and I think that distinction should be made!

Stevo-O is an absolute legend! The suspect was not going to share the information later on. So thank God he got it! Maybe he couldn't be charged for the second girl but everyone knows who did it Thanks to Steve. And wouldn't have known otherwise. But what a miscarriage of Justice. The system sucks sometimes.

It's totally unfair that a good police officer has had his life ruined by a serial killer. He did a wonderful job and all I can say is, I hope he finds solace in his new environment in Somalia. The rules really need to be overhauled for PACE.

This detective is a shining example of a good officer. The second victim would have not been found without his quick thinking and improv. This is the guy they fire and the lot that enabled grooming gangs get to keep their jobs. Make it make sense.

The female judge who ruled the confessions inadmissible is a reflection of the complete loss of perspective on protecting the public; the priority was on following the procedures rather than ensuring evil is out of play.

From my perspective, this disgusting criminal voluntarily confessed to the ‘first’ murder, with the clear knowledge that he was entitled to have legal representation because he initially kept wanting to ‘go back to the station’, as well as repeating, “No comment”, &, although being held under the ‘kidnapping’ predisposition, he placed the law enforcement officer in an unprecedented moral & ethical dilemma with the subsequent confession from a ‘serial killer’, by his offer to ‘show’ the officer where his ‘first’ deceased victim was. This is clearly of no fault to the officer, despite the legal requirement to read the criminal his Miranda Rights. He did ask the murderer, “Are you sure”, prior to being shown the burial location of his supposed first victim. I say ‘supposed’ because we don’t know how many more victims there may be.
This is clearly a wrongful persecution of an outstanding law enforcement officer because if my child was murdered, I would prefer her body back over pathetic justice any day. In comparison to a body retrieval & justice, justice falls short because grief lasts a lifetime, & justice for such an atrocity contains no true equality. Eg: criminal compensation runs out over time, but loss & grief remains. It is deplorable that this law enforcement officer cannot be employed, whilst the psycho serial killer was eventually found guilty and sentenced for the same crime he voluntarily confessed to, & is probably laughing at the psychopathological position he put his ‘captor’ in.
Now ‘that’ is injustice.

Amazing how laws vary from country to country. In the USA spontaneous utterances by offenders are 100% accepted in court.
Screw the "legal ramifications" The confessions were not obtained through torture or any other harmful method. This detective did what he had to do to get answers for the families but it is of course much more important to protect the criminals than an experienced detective who got results.
If I were EVER TO WIN THE LOTTERY..I WOULD PAY ANYTHING TO HAVE THIS MAN AS HEAD OF A
PRIVATE INVESTIGATION COMPANY...
Hopefully, he found a new career after he left the police.

Regardless of the Courts determination that the officers actions "undermined" justice for Shan, the family was supported by that officers decision to press the killer for information, the courts ruling that charges be dropped against the killer for the second murder demonstrates just how ludicrous and self defeating laws have become.

Absolutely agree. The trial judges decision that Det Supt Fulcher was wrong and not to admit the evidence and adding to the distress of the victims' families as well as Steve Fulcher could have been said to be at least questionable and at worst, flawed!

Yes, they did him dirty with the first case, probably not so much the second, however. Regardless, he brought two girls home to their families as opposed to them never having closure. How sad the storied career of a Detective Superintendent came to a close in England. Packing up & moving to Somalia? Well, I just hope he’s got one helluva salary.
@@SisuGirl They did him dirty in the second case as well, the whole idea that the confessions are not accepted is BS but let's go with that. He led them to the bodies, that is independent of a confession and should be admissible. I could possibly lead the police to a dead body it does not mean I killed the people there. I could have come across it or been told about it. He should still have to explain how he knew exactly where the bodies were.
Detective Fulcher is great at his job. It's a great shame what that monster did to those girls. They lived in a great community, the people really came out to help ,and the lantern vigil was very touching.

Could you imagine If he said no stop, and then we would never even know where that second body was and he knew it too. I think you did the right thing underneath it all.
Forget the second body, he got in trouble for the first. We know this guy would not have confessed when with a solicitor as he didn't. Without the body it is incredibly difficult to even get her declared dead let alone get a murder conviction, he would likely still be murdering people.

I am living in Canada- and our police seem to be handcuffed as well by the laws protecting the rights of the accused over the rights of the victims of crime

It’s really disappointing that a police force would go against one of their own because of protocols that were not properly …… then 3 yrs later the courts excepted the same evidence that they denied years before. Crazy.

It shows how convoluted the constraints on that Police officer are, it seems to be geared more towards protection of the criminal than enabling the Police to secure a confession.

You must have seen the same scenarios from a TV detective show. I forget the title of the series but in that episode the star detective throws caution to the wind, doesn't follow police assigned protocols and makes some kind deal with the kidnapper in order for him to show them where he had hidden his victim!! I think that show wrote to that script based on this particular event/case. The show although had a better ending compared to what this man did.

Steve Fulcher took a chance when the killer (not alleged) had a moment of conscience and he uncovered another girl. The fact that the killer refused to talk after being taken to the police station only showed that Steve Fulcher had seized that moment of opportunity therefore to say that he should have adhered to the rules is beyond my comprehension and my utter disgust that he is penalised. If you were a victim of crime you would have wanted a Steve Fulcher on your case to investigate because he gets the job done. Thank you Mr Steve Fulcher I am deeply disappointed and angry that you were failed by the authorities.

I’m reminded of provisions in military law & maybe they exist in civilian law also, about the right or responsibility to disobey illegal, or immoral, orders.

My heart goes out to Becky's mum. While I understand wanting to protect procedural integrity, Fulcher should not be a pariah.
That PACE law definitely needs to be reworked , it's tilted way too far in the suspects favor.
The officer HAD to breach protocol. If he had not, Halliwell would not have led him to either of the bodies. The fact that the bodies were FOUND according to the information that Halliwell provided to the detective proves the legitimacy of the interrogation, as well as Holliwell's guilt. The primary objective of law enforcement should be to keep serial murderers off the street.
Thank god for people like Steve, well done for bringing those girls home to their families x
Steve fulchers actions are complete common sense. PACE and the justice system needs to be revised. This man is an exemplar detective whose quest for justice is unequivocally.

When given the choice between this officer and the officers today (who arrest people for praying in public or posting jokes on social media or basically anything a politician doesn't like) I prefer *this* officer.

I wish we had more police officers like Steve! Laser focus and rules be damned when someone's life is on the line. Christopher was smart, tried to screw up the investigation by NOT repeating his confession. Unreal. Criminals have more rights than the victims. Unbalanced justice. He was treated unfairly. He was doing his job. Period. But another thing sticks out to me. The killer's children and wife. Their lives as they knew it were also over. They, too, were victims of their father's crimes. And I wonder how many more Christopher killed and buried?
I just wish more police were as honourable as Steve Fulcher. Doing what is right is often not much consalation, but in this case he has saved other lives, so he achieved so much. Others could be dead if he hadn't done what he did. Shame on the system that caused him to lose his job.
I have nothing but respect for this officer.
Surely this is an exceptional circumstance. Sometimes the laws rigidity is unfair and unjust to the person who does what is morally right. As Halliwell was found guilty of Becky's death the Steve Fulcher who was instrumental in finding Sian should've been reinstated to his role at the time it all happened and received public acknowledgement of his unfair treatment. Somalia - he'll be flat out there. But he was unfairly treated and common sense did not prevail. Shame on those who stand in their negative attitude towards his actions. 😔

The place where Becky was buried would have been impossible to find if he didn't tell the police where it was.
So let me get this straight, a detective solves a recent abduction, turn murder, uncovers a body from a cold case and gives two families closure (as sad as it is) and as a reward he is railroaded out of the police force and vilified?

Common Sense says you take what the killer offers in the moment so the dead or the living can be recovered. No killers should ever walk because of litigiousness.

That "Line" of protocol is what allows a majority of filthy bastards to be freed, acquitted, and returned to society to do more harm. This police officer did a magnificent thing, and risked his own future to do his job as he was sworn to do. What is more valuable to us as human beings; protecting killers that confess and show where the victims are buried, or more officers like this fine man?
There is something wrong with the law when a serious crime would have been missed if this law had been obeyed by detective Steve Fulcher. Steve Fulcher's decision meant that another murder was admitted to by the murderer, and the victim's family could have closure.
