      This website is not working. The page is jumping all over the place every time I choose something and then I go to check out the pages jumping around. It wants to use PayPal instead of me sending it directly to you and PayPal is not working. This is really frustrating trying just simply make an order.

    Mixing neem seed meal in my starting mix eliminated my fungus gnats problem. I used 1 cup per gallon. However I had top dressed with neem seed meal before and although it eliminated the gnats it was very prone to mold. Save the oil and use the meal. It's cheap and a good organic fertilizer with the benefits of the extract.

    Another great video Gary i learn something new from you all the time. Starting my first container garden this year and yes im late and the weather just broke to over 50 degrees daily. I got my cold pressed neem oil but now i see something new with neem cake and buying right away from ebay. Ill be starting my first seedlings without the neem cake but i will introduce the oil into the soil just as you prescribed. I have two 10 gallon aquariums im using for the seedlings and foiling them in for reflective properties. I have to say your channel is the best for affordable upstart gardeners like myself. Ill be completely ready next year and have two fairly cheap greenhouses for the fall and introduction of my seedlings outside when they geminate and have some growth. You give such great detail and dont waste any of your words. Just joined your fb group a week ago. Thanks for what you do for others! Your a blessing!

      I used neem oil in with my starting mix, then I put fine spagnum moss on top of seeds instead of soil. Great sprout rate so far, I even got the blue poppy seeds to sprout and grow. Started tomatoes,several varieties, mustards, kales, lettuces, cabbages,swiss chards, will start more tender plants next week.

    do you still use this method or still recommend using the neem cake in the starter soil? i also was reading that the neem cake tea can be used against fleas and ticks on your pets, and farm animals. and by spreading the strained out neem cake you can spread that over your yard to control pests there .. i would also think that by putting the leftover slidge from the tea could be put into the compost pile and should work from there .. i dont know .. sure gives alot for thought

      So for water sprays I use 1 or 2 tablespoons for spraying plants outdoor etc. For the starting mix, it is a gallon of mix but I use 2 teaspoons and it seems to be working well. I wanted a lower concentration. -- Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com

      The extracts are usually hydrophobic extracts and they take out all good stuff. I will say hydrophobic extract of neem. You want 100% cold pressed neem oil with all the components. That is why I started selling it, people where getting mislead.

      The neem kernals are organic matter too, so they will mold. That's is soil biology breaking it down. No worries on that mold and fungus. Shop on Amazon and Support The Rusted Garden for Free: Anything you purchase gives a % return back to TRG. Just use The Rusted Garden Link (Looks Like Amazon Search Page) amzn.to/2ttyray anytime you shop. Thanks for using my link. It helps fund my garden videos!

      @bryangugelman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mold is perfectly fine. Not all fungus or bacteria is bad in biology. Organics have a tendency to do this. It simply means your soil is living which is actually super beneficial. Search for living soil and soil food web if you are skeptical.

    Hi Gary,
    I like the idea of this with it going on / in the soil rather than spraying it on the plant, I've had some poor results spraying my strawberries with neem oil before it really knocked them
    back. It could be that strawberries are intolerant of the oil residue on the leaves not sure other plants appeared fine with it, have you heard of this happening before ?.

    I used this on my organic soil mix because of gnats and it got rid of them, I dried the soil up with the neem added into it and I noticed a blanket of mould on the top layer, which I think also killed the gnat larvae and possibly the adults, I love the stuff for that reason alone

  • @seanclimb
    @seanclimb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Gary, I love your videos and have been watching for years! I've had experience with neem and the problem is that its a little too "organic" and as such not very effective. Check out Azamax, its a concentrated form of neem so its just as natural compared to other chemical pesticides but its significantly more concentrated and in turn more effective.

    • @seanclimb
      @seanclimb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also works great as a root drench as a preventative measure against aphids because they no longer want to eat the roots or nectar.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Azamax is where they concentrate the azadirachtin. The neem has been effective for me but what did you notice pest or disease wise that the Azamax addressed cold pressed neem didn't. Just curious.

    • @seanclimb
      @seanclimb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think any pest will develop a tolerance to any treatment, so giving a more concentrated form will help prevent a tolerance, especially with a systemic approach. I don't know if neem alone could saturate the plant systemically enough to ward off pests. In theory, after treatment the plant contains enough azadirachtin that when a pest (on the leaves or in the roots) tries to munch on your plants, they will immediately stop or perish, thus a population never develops. Its a fine line with edible plants though, especially ones with shorter life cycles to begin with (lettuce for example) because you probably don't want to eat azadirachtin in high concentrations.

    I got a question about neem cake. Is it suitable to be used in indoor potted plants that are not exposed to rainfall. It has nitrification inhibitor in it to slow down the conversion of ammonia to nitrate. Does that mean it will reduce the amount of nitrogen available to the potted plant? Thank you.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I could be used. I dont know if it inhibits nitrogen but it might use some as it decays itself, I would experiment if you arent sure.

      Yep. I use boiling water to prep my starting mixes. Cold freezing is suppose to help. But I find any organic product we by has gnat eggs. And I move my flats in and out in the sun so I am sure gnats hitch ride back in. My goal is to reduce pests and diseases. Eradicating would be nice but just not realistic. Cinnamon is good to use.

    HMMMmmmmm, by making the neem soil for your starter plants does it become like a systemic preventative in your plants?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What I cant speak to is if it absorbs it. My understanding is neem drenches and neem cake sit in the soil and protect that way but not as an absorb systemic. The fungus gnats lay eggs in the soil. The oil effects development. The larva hatch and eat the roots that have neem oil on them, they die.
