    Simple and straightforward, man. I was stressing all evening thinking about the job ahead of me I've never done. Thank you 1000x. Ordered it tonight and this weekend it's bye-bye to the rattle.

    Fupa, you and Mercedes source are my go to guys for everything merc related. I have been looking for a car to get my through the next 12 months here in the U.K. Being the frugal man that I am, I turn up to dealerships with my OBD scan tool, torch and box of other bits to help me assess the conditions of the cars I go to view. I went to see the ‘wild card’ that was £500 out of my budget. It was a W202 C200 petrol with 45k miles. Having owned (still do) an S202 C220 cdi I know the short falls (rust) and the strong points (well poised cruiser with legendary engines). Anyway - the car was absolutely immaculate. A real credit to its previous owners - and dare say - one of the best examples in the country. I bought it this morning with full knowledge that not only will it last the next 12 months, but perhaps the next 12 years.

      wow ..good find ... I haven't seen one with low mileage in ages ..(I'll grab one if I find it though ) you are correct that the only real issue is rust.. everything else is fairly simple fixes . I took my obd scanner to a dealer this winter to check a low mile ML350..every light on the dash was lit up. I told the dealer I would scan it and let him know what was coming up, since he didn't seem to think they were a problem. The car had been electrically destroyed by an aftermarket stereo installer who rewired everything with scotch tape .. lol.. not joking. All door panels had been broken when removing them to replace speakers ..he cut harnesses he was too lazy to unplug, then twisted the wires together with scotch tape.. many of the wires were twisted together to the wrong wires.. he couldn't even match the wire colors .. I walked away from that one . Scan tool never leaves my trunk :)

      fupabox I’ll do a walk around video on Friday and post the link here so you can see :) I think buying W202’s in the UK is just ripe for the picking now - the rust bucket, high miles, neglected specimens are being scrapped and a real gem can be had for a relatively modest price.

    I watched this video this morning and change my water pump in the afternoon, thanks for the help!. It took me about 2 hrs 20 mins and super happy I saved so much money and time!!!
    I think the best thing in the video is seeing how to get the belt off and on again so easily!
    Next on my agenda is trying to see if the electric plug on the gearbox will stop leaking with just an o-ring change(crossing fingers), and if I really have to I might change a leaking welsh/freeze plug under the exhaust. I have no clue how to get the old one out and fit a new one. So far the quick setting steel putty is winning the battle.
    then is the aircon pump, I need to have the electronic doodat that operates aircon clutch refurbished.

    Excellent video. Was going to give my car to the garage to change the water pump but after seeing your video I'd have been embarrassed to give it to him to loosen and tighten 8 bolts. Great idea for the bolts to ensure you keep them in order. Just did the water pump today in no time whatsoever. What I did though was to fill the system with water after changing the pump. If there are no visible signs of any leaks in a few days time, I'll drain the water and put the violent in.
    Thanks for the video!

    Your videos have saved me thousands on my own repairs so a HUGE thanks!
    Regarding the coolant loss when you pull the water pump off - would draining the block keep that from happening?
    I had to drain my block when I replaced my head gasket and didn't know how high the coolant level was in the block -

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only about a gallon will come out with a water pump replacement .. if you have changed it recently you can just drain off a gallon or so, so it doesn't all get wasted

    Hello, nice explanation. Would you please have any idea why there are waterdrops from below the aluminum body of the oil compartment (probably is the water coming from the water pump, I can't see) but ONLY when the engine is hot. No water drops when the engine is cool, thus no los of fluid. Best regards!

  • @NimaSomeh
    @NimaSomeh 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    hey man, thnx for the vid. but what is that buzzing sound that starts after 10 seconds when you turn the engine on and its cold. it sounds like a jet engine lol and then it goes away after a few minutes. I am sure it is related to cooling system but I am not sure if its to heat the water electrically.

    Hey there bet its cold up there today. I'm doing my water pump on the C230 201k miles and there was a screw in the weep hole under the pulley shaft on your car that I was wondering about whether to seal it or not but you didnt so I wont. Did the crankshaft oil seal last year should have done the pump then I though that the heater core was leaking but the radiator was corroded a bit I replaced that. When I first got the car it sounded like a diesel the belt tensioner shock was rapping due to the tensioner rapidly shaking. I changer the tensioner shock, pulley, and tensioner still did it I used clear tubing,butyl caulk and hoseclamps to disable the shock motion enough to stop it. I took the shock off completely and it was way worse. The water pump will quiet the motor down a bit prob but that shaking is just weird. I might take it to a Merc guy in Noho at some point so he can shake his head at it lol. Ty as always man!

    Thanks for all the great videos. Just changed out my water pump and I wouldn't have thought about ordering the bolts due to the different lengths. Job was easy enough but I was glad I saw it all beforehand.
    So how do you like the SL? I'm thinking about picking one up down the road to replace the c230 as a daily driver. Is the maintenance that much more involved or expensive? I know the parts are probably more spendy, but are they that much worse or is it much more finicky with maintenance?

  • @delboy8903
    @delboy8903 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks mate. My E220 is rattling away at start-up and above 3000 rpm and I was wondering what it might be. Came here to find out how the tensioner worked. So simple; been struggling with a long screwdriver…so I guess I should change my belt pretty soon too. Cheers. Let me stand you a round of antifreeze next time.

  • @saturnguitars9274
    @saturnguitars9274 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    OK ... at 2:44 you use a 15mm socket to backoff the tensioner.
    Oops. I tried to back it off and the bolt actually started coming off rather than loosen the tensioner.
    Ha! Thoughts?
    Thank you

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Saturn Guitars tighten it and then try again...make to after all is done that you re-check that bolt ..if your car has the smaller (I think it's 10mm) bolt head built into the end of the shaft, you can also use that to take tension off the pulley... I usually use the 15mm nut because I find the force needed to move the pulley is too much for the smaller bolt head.. but if you can get a good wrench on it , it is fine

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Saturn Guitars the 10mm torx is the bolt built into the pulley shaft...most people use it to release tensioner tension...I find the socket slips off the 10mm bolt , so I usually use the 15mm..which is the bolt that holds the pulley on...usually there isn't enough tension to untighten the 15mm bolt ,which is what is happening to you

    • @timickan
      @timickan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fupabox my das xentry system specifically tells me not to use the bolt but the E10 torx to release tension pressure.

    I have a 1997 c230 W202 project car. I am in the process of changing the water pump. However the coolant you’ve shown is golden whereas the one I got from Mercedes is blue in colour but the one in my car looks goldenish / brown. I am confused. Can someone advise please..

    Q: Is it really that critical to use MB Coolant? And Why.
    Thanks again, Buddy.

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Saturn Guitars Mercedes coolant is designed for the specific combination of materials that it comes in contact with in the engine and cooling system. Mercedes specialist I spoke to a while back said that he has rarely seen a headgasket or cooling system leak when using the specified coolant...usually when he sees cooling issues ,the car has some other coolant in the system. So for the $20 extra for the MB coolant it's not worth the risk. Nowadays almost every manufacturer has a different specified coolant blend.. I don't know if it is all a scam to deny warranty claims.. but the days of universal oils fluids and coolants seems to be gone

    • @saturnguitars9274
      @saturnguitars9274 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** ... Point taken. And noted that some materials; namely OEM paper or composite gaskets are designed to work with proprietary and tested fluids, etc. I'm enlightened. Thank you, good sir.

      @fupabox  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you could by all means if you want to .. it isn't necessary if it is working fine. But for the few extra $$ for a new thermostat it is prob. a good time to change it for peace of mind

    Hi there, I own a w202 c180 sport. I don't know why they call it SPORT, it weighs 3 tons and and it struggles for power. I was thinking of adding a turbo from another W202 and I was wondering what would you think about it? It has only done 63000 miles... It is a fine car and I love it. Thanks

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ENGTOAL HI I have seen guys add a turbo or a supercharger, and it seems fairly straighforward since Mercedes made turbo and supercharged models.. so it would just be a matter of adapting some of those parts to fit.

    Thanks for the vids much appreciated Fupabox but now I have amajor problem my c230 is leaking oil, I checked oil pan it's in flawless condition, do u have any ideas where I can begin this investigation? Thanks ur friend Tony. This happens a week after changing water pump and I believe it's spitting out on left side of engine based on oil spurts underneath car when I pulled over

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      the best way to start is to wash down the engine so you can spot where the oil is coming from...does it drip while running , or when turned off, or both ?...is it coming out under pressure like a spray ? how much oil is coming out ?

    I have a major problem now my c230 won't shift out of first gear, is this the transmission or could it be another issue, the car doesn't have a transmission fluid leak.

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      could be a braking problem/wheel speed sensor (abs light on ? ) fluid level could be low. solenoid valve block in the transmission, or a fluid contamination of the wiring loom (check for transmission fluid in the big round electrical connector at the front of the transmission)
