  • "Dracula" graphic novel read by Christopher Lee.
Dracula is a novel by Bram Stoker, published in 1897. As an epistolary novel, the narrative is related through letters, diary entries, and newspaper articles. It has no single protagonist, but opens with solicitor Jonathan Harker taking a business trip to stay at the castle of a Transylvanian noble, Count Dracula. Harker escapes the castle after discovering that Dracula is a vampire, and the Count moves to England and plagues the seaside town of Whitby. A small group, led by Abraham Van Helsing, hunt Dracula and, in the end, kill him.
Dracula was mostly written in the 1890s. Stoker produced over a hundred pages of notes for the novel, drawing extensively from Transylvanian folklore and history. Some scholars have suggested that the character of Dracula was inspired by historical figures like the Wallachian prince Vlad the Impaler or the countess Elizabeth Báthory, but there is widespread disagreement. Stoker's notes mention neither figure. He found the name Dracula in Whitby's public library while holidaying there, picking it because he thought it meant devil in Romanian.
The graphic novel printed in 1966.
The audio was recorded in 1966.

I love the comic-book sketches! The artwork provides some good visuals. And Christopher Lee's narration really brings the story to life.

The images in this video are scanned from a 1966 Ballantine paperback illustrated by Al McWilliams, adapted from Bram Stoker by Otto Binder. In its accuracy to Stoker's novel this Binder/McWilliams version is second only to the Thomas/Giordano version, which Marvel published over the course of decades and remains the most complete and true-to-the-book comics version available. Yet as topnotch as Giordano's work is, to my eye the illustrations here surpass all others in their realism, their sense of depth, and in McWilliams' flare for shadows and mist.

I love his voice in this era. Always reminds me of King Haggard from Last Unicorn. To some people he was Dracula, to some he is Saruman, to some he is Scaramanga. However, the first time I ever seen Sir Lee, he was King Haggard.

There’s something so silly about the “dam-dam-daaaaah!!!!!!” musical cues, but it’s a product of its time, and I guess it was effective in the 60’s? It feels more like a minor jump-scare each time to me, cuz of how loud it is XD This is really nice and well made. It’s so interesting to see a portion of the story come to life like this :)
