@Lost in Vegas - I'm going to get to what you guys are getting at, but don't have the words for. Meshuggah does their own thing, and unless you know what it is, you can't describe it. They like to play with different time signatures, polyrythms, and patterns. Because it is not the norm, there is not necessarily a "groove" to latch on to. A lot of what they do is predicated on unpredictability. There is a reason that their stuff has been the subject of some universities for their use of music theory, and it's mainly to do with timing and how things line up at certain places. What they do is hard... you can't play this shit drunk. They are not my favorite band, but I went to one of their concerts. Seeing them pull it off live is f**king amazing. I think through your journey, you've subconsciously picked up on some of that. Love watching you guys.
"They like to play with different time signatures" Nope. All of their songs are in 4/4, but the key is that they're syncopated, meaning you're hearing polyrhythms that interrupt the flow of the beats, causing disorientation among listeners. Meshuggah simply takes it waaaay farther than most. Listen to Haake, the drummer. His hands typically land on the 4, while his feet are busy providing those insane polyrhythms.
@@matternicuss Wasn't trying to say all their songs are in different time signatures, more at hinting that is what they do with polyrythms and patterns.
The way I learned it through reading and listening to interviews of the band since 1995 when I got into them (Destroy Erase Improve); they do mostly play in 4/4, but in those particular sigs, its what they do _WITHIN that_ "4/4" is what makes them so awesomely strange and mathematical. Each member, including Jens the vocalist, take turns being a percussive instrument. And Haake at times is the "Lead" on drums! of matter (in the studio) is the easy choice. but, i'm gonna go with nascent simply because it doesn't get enough love. also would like to see eden, album version.
As a big fan of Meshuggah this track is one that you check out after you’ve listened to some of the rest of their discography. After you check out the rest of their stuff, this song is a masterpiece. It might sound simple but it’s on purpose there are very tight technical things happening and you can still bang in Straight 4 and that’s what makes Meshuggah. Listen to Obzen, Dancers to a discordant system, Nostrum, Phantoms, Straws Pulled at Random. They’ll grow on you it’s all rhythms man.
Electric Wizard - "Funeralopolis" or "Son of Nothing". Heavier than bowling balls between your legs, and is basically a more sleasy version of Black Sabbath.
Funeropolis for sure.. maybe return trip. Both very misanthropic/cynical/ nihilist lyrics my go to songs to get a certain mood out.. and oh man.... that distorted fuzzy HEAVIER than the EARTH riffs.... soooooo soo good.....
You should try giving Rammstein a listen even though you don't speak German (their lyrics might be a little basic but in several of their songs they are a comment on society). The German language just lends itself so well to metal. As starter songs I would go for: Ich Tu dir we, Sonne, Mann gegen mann or Keine lust. Keep up doing a great job on your journey through the Metal-verse.
I've been telling them Du Riechst So Gud for months. Really hoping they get around to Rammstein, I think they'll love it. The groove, the powerful drums, some transitions but not too many, clean but heavy vocals
You guys should check out Clockworks by Meshuggah, and the video showing the drumming. Also, to help you understand the beat... it's all in 4/4, with different time signatures played at the same time below, creating poly rhythms. When you listen to Meshuggah, look the overall 4/4 time signature.
Wow, I love that you guys went back to bleed in this video. This would be a really cool feature to add to your videos when it's an option. Or even a revisit on certain songs in general.
Really wish New Millennium Cyanide Christ got voted through. I've probably requested that shit 100+ times on the various reaction channels. Never seen anyone do it though.
@@jsunh98 IDK I think the video of them jamming out playing "Air Instruments" along with the song makes it impossible not to get into a groove with. And I disagree about the quality. IMHO, Chaosphere is on par from a recording quality standpoint as all their later albums, and the songwriting was much better. Just my opinion though.
can you remix the vocals out as long as those incredibly awful vox are present, SOP will remain unlistenable. (Damn, what was Chuck, rest his soul, thinking there!?!??!?!)
My favorite metal album of all time... Inspiring... Original... Creative... Meshugah has the same problem as many metal bands of this age... It seems uninspired, so repetitive, so lazy.
I feel you guys, esp when Ryan was like 'I almost feel the groove', and George was like 'it almost builds you up' You guys keep skirting around melodic death metal that's ACCESSIBLE to a new listener... ya'll just keep diving headfirst in lol! And you do the same with power metal as well, which, I gotta give you props for, on both! You were almost there on this one, and I can tell you appreciated them. But nothing wrong with easing yourself into the genre, so you can understand it a little better. I STILL recommend you revisit Amon Amarth for melodic death metal. You reviewed an early, shit song and you NEED to revisit them. They honestly bridge the gap between mainstream metal and melodic death metal. Try 'Live for the Kill' as it has Apocalyptica behind them on orchestra and a very clear, yet elegant melody progression. But anything off Twilight of the Thundergod and more recent would probably suffice.
Meshuggah don't need to try to appeal to people outside their genre as they have enough fan base world wide. In flames are a good example who changed their style to fit into a sound with different taste and they ended up losing all their original fan base and gained new fans instead and are probably only just as popular if not less.
The irony is In Flames could have been bigger than ever if they didn't change their style/sound. I think the same could be said about Meshuggah. If they keep it going and stick to who they are I think they have a lot of room to grow an extremely large fan base, and will definitely go down as one of the greatest metal bands of all time. And hell, nowadays they are main-staging just a few notches down from bands like Slipknot, Korn, Metallica, System Of A Down, etc, so sky is the limit imo. As the world population grows, so will the amount of metalheads. Think of the possibilities 20, 30, 50, 100 years from now.
Metallica is also a good example. While In Flames went softer and lost all of their fans, Metallica went radio friendly and gained popularity while their old fans stuck around complaining but still listening.
Yeeeeeah Bleed is one of those that really grows on you; after a few listens it's really hard to not enjoy some of those grooves. I agree with the point that to reach that elusive status of "truly great" a band needs to be able to extend its appeal beyond the boundaries of fans within their genre; there are plenty of bands that are fully aware that what they're doing isn't going to have that extended appeal. Nothing wrong with it, it's a super rare thing for a band to stumble across that trait unintentionally and capitalize without compromising their original style. I'd recommend you guys check out Monuments. Bunch of songs would be good choices; Atlas is probably the best bet though.
Its about time to hear the late great Chris Squire's groove and the infamous Bass riff :). Meshuggah to Yes covers all basses (no pun intended): "Variety is the spice of Life" \m/.

It's so funny because you're experience of Meshuggah mirrors my own: I first heard Bleed and couldn't get into it all, then revisited Meshuggah (years) later, and they became one of my favourite bands. Rational Gaze would be right up your guys alley though! Hopefully you can revisit it at some point in the future. Cheers
That's an awesome idea! Definitely do a second listen as a bonus at the end or even as a separate video. But definitely would recommend "Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion" and "Rational Gaze". Maybe "Lethargica" too!
I'm glad you finally did Meshuggah again! Great reaction and you made very good points. You should listen to their album Catch 33. It's basicly one 45 minutes long song of crazy heavy stuff. It feels like a decent into madness. You can hear the influence of Meshuggah in alot of bands in different metal genres but still no band sound simillar to them. They just have this unique style.
One GOLLEEE. 😅 I love you guys and I love Meshuggah. Demiurge was the song that I hoped you would try next. I felt that it is a gateway to their more abrasive stuff. The fact that you went back to Bleed to give it a second look shows that you guys really on a journey with music. You could always take an easy road and give only hot takes but you guys take the time and consider what might appeal to others. I’m really glad I subscribed.
I’m so proud of you guys lol, I watch a lot of these and your excitement reignites mine in these older songs. I found my self laughing with you and covered in goosebumps at other parts, keep it up, you’re on the cusp of the reason for the movement
To Ryan's point at the end: I totally get where he's coming from but I could not disagree more. Of course it's a valid indicator of greatness if you manage to produce music that appeals to a wide audience - it means that you have somewhat figured out the "formula of popular music". But then again, on the other hand, it's extremely important to me that there are artists who push the boundaries and use art (whether it'd be music, movies or anything else) to express their specific taste and message - coz that's the only way you get progress and not just more of the same. And luckily, it always happends: Just think of Blues and Jazz in the early 20th century, rock in 60s (Beatles etc.), then metal, rap and hiphop... But that's just my humble opinion.
Meshuggah did not create Djent in fact Djent in my eyes shouldn't be a genre, all it really is a "description" of how Frederick tune his guitar that's just how he plays and it just so happens that's the sound that occurred the word djent is just describing the sound it made. Meshuggah are in extreme Progressive Heavy Metal band that utilize Groove Metal a derivative of Thrash
People forget that many early and mid era Thrash bands, especially Death Metal, use the "Palm-muted" chugging riffage ;). Here is an example from "1989" - Powermad: 1. th-cam.com/video/5_AtZnw7sjM/w-d-xo.html 2. th-cam.com/video/02bq2fZHhzo/w-d-xo.html Many other bands out there from the past were doing it all before the "Djent" scene \m/.

@@alphaenemy Knowing how they dig transitions and changes in rhythm - "Combustion" will blow their heads off. The entire "Obzen" album is more or less like that, actually, where "Bleed" is sort of the exception, but is THE track of the album, cause it's just a phenomenal song in itself. I would say it's a genius decision to include it exactly in this album. Also, what I think they were trying to say is that "Demiurge" is better to introduce the band with than "Bleed", but "Bleed" is ultimately the better song, which I agree with. Still, people are here cause they want to see the reaction and the shock value of not listening to HEAVY stuff like Meshuggah and being introduced to freakin' "BLEED" is a reaction that everyone in the know will love to see. I thought you would find it a little repetitive or samey. But I'm glad y'all liked it. I think you guys would also like REALLY old Meshuggah - "Contradictions Collapse" / "None" era. Cemetery Gates is a must in terms of metal.
Have they ever done Cowboys or Domination, though?
cemetary gates is probably the worst pantera song. give these guys credit, they can handle heavier music. cemetary gates is pedestrian metal
A must-avoid
The single worst Pantera track including the pre-cowboys albums
People hate Cemetery Gates? That song is my shit. It's irresistible for me and I'm no pedestrian.
Meshuggah - is the golden mine of views. They have one of the most loyal fans in the world.
"They like to play with different time signatures"
Nope.
That's fair. I was just trying to clarify. Sorry if it came off as rude
@@matternicuss No problem dude. I probably could have worded it better. :P

Meshuggah Clockworks , Rational Gaze and Perpetual Black Second!!!
They will like Perpetual Black Second, that groove and song structure is totally up their alley. Also, an underrated song by them I feel. That song kicks sacks live.
localhoast2009 Clockworks!!!
Straws Pulled at Random would be perfect too, considering the ending to that song
Clockworks might be a bit much for them to enjoy imo. I'd recommend Rational Raze for sure though.
If they have to react to Clockwork they need to check the drum video of Thomas Haake !
Gojira- The Gift of Guilt
Jacob Davis - Live version plz.
@@TheProphegy YEEEESSS
Jacob Davis hell yeah!! Best song of them probally, and toxic garbage island in my opinion
totally "The Gift of Guilt"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They will undoubtedly love that song. So catchy and anthemic. The live version at Brixton Academy would blow their minds.
I think Dancers to a Discordant System would give them more sections to analyze.
True. What an amazing song!
That's always the first song I show people. It's got so many high points.
They should just react to the whole of Catch 33.... 🤣
For sure! And that is in my opinion one of their absolut best tracks
Agreed. Personally my favorite song by them.
Do “Dancers to a discordant system” their finest song in many aspects!
^ I second this!
It's pronounced "dem-ee-urge" (emphasis on the middle syllable)
demi urge. pretty simple
TESSERACT - Of Matter (Live at Sphere Studios). This is a MUST! It's SO good! No lies!
Ashe is an amazing singer.
Seeing Meshuggah perform Demiurge and Bleed live is an otherwordly total body experience. It was so intense and hypnotic and they are unbelievably tight as a group.
Devin Townsend - Deadhead Live Royal AlbertHall
Tesseract - Acceptance or Nascent or Of Matter (Live in Studio)
William Edmiston Of Matter for sure.
YEESSSSS Acceptance PLEASE! I recently found Concealing Fate and it quickly became a favorite.
Concealing Fate is superb. really like Perfection and Deception.
of matter (in the studio) is the easy choice. but, i'm gonna go with nascent simply because it doesn't get enough love. also would like to see eden, album version.
One of my favorite reaction channels. you guys are very open minded and appreciate other kinds of music, Very cool to see!
If they like that maybe a Yob song after that?
Funeropolis for sure.. maybe return trip. Both very misanthropic/cynical/ nihilist lyrics my go to songs to get a certain mood out.. and oh man.... that distorted fuzzy HEAVIER than the EARTH riffs.... soooooo soo good.....
Should start with Vinum Sabbathi. Funeralopolis or Return trip would be fine too.
Power Trip - Executioner’s Tax
(you’ll love it)
Eddie Cardwell agreed!!!!
Hell yes...Swing of the axe!
agreeeedd
Power Trip is one of the better bands out there right now.
saw them live, great band
You should try giving Rammstein a listen even though you don't speak German (their lyrics might be a little basic but in several of their songs they are a comment on society). The German language just lends itself so well to metal. As starter songs I would go for: Ich Tu dir we, Sonne, Mann gegen mann or Keine lust.
Keep up doing a great job on your journey through the Metal-verse.
I've been telling them Du Riechst So Gud for months. Really hoping they get around to Rammstein, I think they'll love it. The groove, the powerful drums, some transitions but not too many, clean but heavy vocals
I heard you say "Do Not Look Down"..... I HIGHLY recommend it. Def my favorite Meshuggah song. The riff pattern is just absolutely beautiful
Never seen anyone do it though.
th-cam.com/video/pOz8XuVf8PM/w-d-xo.html
@@animalwillopus79 Thanks. Never knew they did that!
it's a good song, but there's too many other good meshuggah songs with better recording quality
Love that song, it's what got me into meshuggah
Guys you should revisit Death. Something from the album Sound of Perseverance.
It is pure gold for a metal elitist, a masterpiece :)
can you remix the vocals out as long as those incredibly awful vox are present, SOP will remain unlistenable. (Damn, what was Chuck, rest his soul, thinking there!?!??!?!)
lucifer lavey gtfo here
My favorite metal album of all time...
Really appreciate you 2 guys being open minded enough to give an honest assessment of this genre of music! !
Meshuggah don't need to try to appeal to people outside their genre as they have enough fan base world wide. In flames are a good example who changed their style to fit into a sound with different taste and they ended up losing all their original fan base and gained new fans instead and are probably only just as popular if not less.
James Dean well said
The irony is In Flames could have been bigger than ever if they didn't change their style/sound. Think of the possibilities 20, 30, 50, 100 years from now.
yeah but could be bigger
Metallica is also a good example. While In Flames went softer and lost all of their fans, Metallica went radio friendly and gained popularity while their old fans stuck around complaining but still listening.
In flames sound great, period
I immediately liked Bleed the first time I heard it, but I gotta say it's like their most over rated song.
They should do Admit Defeat or The Uncollective
Between the Buried and Me-Selkies
That solo :)
Jesse Bowman recently got into this band and that was one of the first songs....amazing
please listen to this!
this is the song
Amazing, but Ants of The Sky is the perfection
I think its about time for that Scourge Of Iron.... Cannibal Corpse with Corpsegrinder is a MUST!!! You wont regret it.

That song makes me at least a full four and a half inches!!! Best on the album..
My fav is Break Those Bones that Sinews Gave it Motion

The Mars Volta- Viscera Eyes, or Cygnus Vismund Cygnus

Hero of War by Rise Against.
Protest the Hero - Mist/Animal Bones/C'est la Vie! Any of these, I think you'd love. Pleaseeeee! You'll love the drumming, guitar and I'd love to know what you think of the vocalist.
Cheers
Dude same
Mine is very similar, but the revisiting happened like a month after.
That's an awesome idea! Definitely do a second listen as a bonus at the end or even as a separate video. But definitely would recommend "Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion" and "Rational Gaze". Maybe "Lethargica" too!
You guys have come a long way, have learned a lot about metal, picked up the idiosyncrasies of what appeals to ppl, love it!
I feel like Catch 33 is in the final stages of Meshuggah acceptance (lol). The next stage imo is Nothing (the remastered version).
dem · i · urge

So much yes!!
One GOLLEEE. 😅
I love you guys and I love Meshuggah.
Between the Buried and Me - Astral Body! Great video as always
Hell yes
To Ryan's point at the end:
I totally get where he's coming from but I could not disagree more.
Actually Your opinion is a fact.
You need to give Lamb of God another shot. I would recommend Omerta or Walk with me in Hell
Straws Pulled at Random should've been the first Meshuggah song recommended
Meshuggah did not create Djent in fact Djent in my eyes shouldn't be a genre, all it really is a "description" of how Frederick tune his guitar that's just how he plays and it just so happens that's the sound that occurred the word djent is just describing the sound it made. Meshuggah are in extreme Progressive Heavy Metal band that utilize Groove Metal a derivative of Thrash
People forget that many early and mid era Thrash bands, especially Death Metal, use the "Palm-muted" chugging riffage ;). Here is an example from "1989" - Powermad: 1. th-cam.com/video/5_AtZnw7sjM/w-d-xo.html
2. th-cam.com/video/02bq2fZHhzo/w-d-xo.html
Many other bands out there from the past were doing it all before the "Djent" scene \m/.
Djent is a rhythmic and percussive guitar style of playing.
Djent is a guitar tone
Djent as a term is resented by Meshuggah. Welcome to Djent Facts!

Combustion is the song for you, guys.
Yes!
No, Meshuggah is just not for them, period. Meshuggah is for people who already truly love death and thrash and are ready to appreciate the boundaries being pushed.
@@alphaenemy I agree
I would love to see them react to stuff like Samael or Coroner "Grin" (specifically, cause I feel they'll fall in love with it), but I guess those are not that much commercial. Whatever.

I was much like you guys when I initially heard Meshuggah. I heard some older songs and understood the appeal and why / how they were pioneers of the genre, but I could not get into them personally. Then Koloss came out and that all changed. It just seems to be a more accessible album. That being said, I'm a little surprised you guys still liked this song, lol. I thought you would find it a little repetitive or samey. But I'm glad y'all liked it.
I think you guys would also like REALLY old Meshuggah - "Contradictions Collapse" / "None" era. The track "Humiliative" comes to mind.
