Episode 98: McDonald's Massacre

Around 4pm on July 18, 1984, 41 year old James Oliver Huberty entered a busy McDonald's in San Ysidro, California, carrying 3 guns and a bag of
ammunition. He opened fire on the people both inside the restaurant and in the parking lot. He managed to kill 21 people and injure an additional 19 before being shot to death by a SWAT team sniper. Huberty’s massacre lasted over 77 minutes.So, how did police allow this unrelenting attack to go on for so long? Were they genuinely concerned about putting innocent people at risk? Or did their protocols cost lives? And what exactly could drive someone to commit this sort of horrific crime? Lauren Ash investigates.
