      They even cut out the silent parts. The awkward silence is a huge part of the discomfort and adds a lot to the lines. Horrible representation of the show.

      Yep agree..... and also remember the US version references this so these characters aren't like x.... they are x and the US version is like x.... just saying and taking a tribal stance on the content I've not created for a feeling of moral superiority.

    I agree to an extent that the US version is more overtly funny, the UK version has a lot more cringe-based humor. The US version can be very in-your-face with its humor, while the UK version can be a lot more subtle. I don't necessarily think one is in any way better than the other, you can't really compare them when they're completely different styles of humor. I will credit the UK version for laying the ground-work essentially crafting the formula of The Office that the US version did justice. There's also a weird sense of nostalgia looking back to the early 2000s with the UK version I don't feel with the US version.

    Obviously coming from the UK I love the original office. It’s what introduced me to Gervais and Merchant. And Freeman. But I have to say The US Office is part of our daily routine, we love it. The characters are amazing and once the first few episodes were out the way, they found their way. The actors themselves are now amazing to me - just like Gervais etc. Steve, Rainn, John, Jenna, everybody.. well done to Greg Daniels for being brave enough to take the conversion on. There are very big differences between between American and British comedy. We find awkwardness, empty silences and sarcasm/cringe hilarious. I dont think some of these transcend very well over the pond. Especially not to the US Office. They are really different programmes. Things like Inbetweeners is very British but also quite straight forward. Say with Friends, no one in England who has any sort of 'street cred' would admit to liking it as its too staged. When The Office first came out there were vast proportions of the country that didnt know if it was a comedy. It was so subtle. Eye movemts, the way the cameras are subtly changing their angles , the sarcasm the sheer desperation of Brent wanting to be loved. We all relate to characters like that.
    Loving you are doing the whole reaction to British humour. Its really interesting to see what you guys think is funny compared to us. My advice is watch it all. Especially not reading the so called punchline before the clip is over. Sorry for the waffle i am sooo precious of The Office as I am Peep Show. American networks have bought the rights to many British sitcoms over the years, with varying degrees of success. The Office is obviously one of the great success stories, along with All in the Family ('Til Death Us Do Part) and Sanford & Son (Steptoe & Son).
    A notable failure is Fawlty Towers, the subject of three failed attempts at a US remake. Only one made it to a pilot, I think. John Cleese tells the story of one attempt in which 'only one thing' was changed from the original: Basil had been written out. When Cleese heard that, he thought that everything he'd ever heard about Americans was right.

    Agree that some of the punchlines were cut from the clips. One of the funniest things I've seen on TV was the "office appraisal", where david brent gives keith his appraisal. There's a short clip on this, On par with the sheriff scene from Silver Streak.
    The UK and US versions are different, so it's best not to compare like for like. The US version is a comedy series set in an office whereas the UK one is a spoof documentary, very dry and if you are not tuned in you would miss most of the jokes. Us Brits say we should have included a few custard pies in faces for the Australians to laugh at.

  • @EfftupSmith
    @EfftupSmith 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I see others have pointed out the problems with these clips. In some cases, particularly the Oggy Oggy one, they actually cut off the punchline. After the stupid rhyme, Tim asks about Oggy. and the UK version of the show is about the awkwardness, so the uncomfortable silences are funny in themselves, it's weird if they are cut out. YOu should just try and watch the whole show. It;s only 12 episodes and a Christmas special.

They never (Or at least very rarely) have a big slapstick physical moment, that is exactly the essence of the series, the fact that they are meant to be real people being filmed for a BBC documentary on Office life.....That I think is where the American Office fails in that it breaks rank with the constraints of reality.

    I don’t think the Uk version is better it’s just different. The humour is more brutal and at times it can be painful to watch but it is very clever and insightful. The US version is more immediately funny and the characters are a little more likeable. I think most people like Michael but very few people would admit to liking David Brent. I’ve never worked in the US so I don’t know how realistic it is but what is painful as well as funny is how true to life the UK version is.

      Not all shows but Ricky Gervais always said the absolute best comedy was 2 6 episode series and quit while you are ahead. works brilliantly for Fawlty Towers and the Young Ones. 'Allo 'allo kinda milked the joke too long and went way past its sell by date because it didn't know when to stop.

    I'd say this clip hasn't really captured what the series is all about. you need the minute before, and more crucially the minute after the line is delivered to get a better grasp of the context. Where The Office is concerned, it's only a 'one liner' if you already know the context.

    American 'The Office' is just a pale version of the original.

    • @halgari
      @halgari 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an entirely different type of comedy. In the British office you're supposed to hate the boss, but at some point you just can't stop cringing and the show starts to die. In the US version they toned that back and made the boss a bit more believable (really how can you be that crass and keep your job in the US?). Over time the audience starts to see the boss as a person and even starts to cheer for him at points. Two different shows, two different goals.
