I bought a 1960's Lyle on ebay. Made in Japan about 50 years ago. Rosewood and spruce. Bought some tools and went through the whole guitar - new tuners, fret job, truss rod. Pulled all the metal out of the saddle to make her more responsive. The whole Magilla. She's a beaut. Sound is nothing short of wonderful. I was only able to do this because Dave has shared his craft. Thank you Dave. Music is being made because of you.
Havent made it past the 15 seconds, and im gonna finish the video, but that cracked me up. Title: Common Acoustic Guitar Problems First Line: Howdy folks... I got something here i dont see very often
I've got a Conn the spittin image of this one. About 1972 vintage with the problems you described. My first exposure to you're videos was in our successful attempt to revive it. Thanks again for your helpful videos.
Dave, I really appreciate the time you've taken to post all of these videos. I'm now doing better work than the geniuses at my local guitar shop, and my brand new Godin plays awesome. Cheers from Florida!
I have a Fender F-3 I GOT IN 1980 AND IT'S STILL HUMMIN' AND A BUZZIN' ...In other words, still plays great. Had some work done on it several years ago and corrected a couple of problems...
My bass E string sounds kinda dull with little sustain. No buzzing but I’m just not happy with the tone of the E string especially when playing a G. Suggestions? Thanks!
Shaving the bridge down and the saddle again is a possible option. AS LONG AS it leaves at least 50% of the saddle showing above the bridge. I do it all the time with Vintage Yamaha Acoustics that are 35+ years old. 100% success record. ;)
New fan here, good vids. One question, how much pull do properly tuned strings have on the bridge and body? would it be better to store after loosening the tension some ?
2 years ago, I bought a 1972 Harmony H-166 acoustic. It had been 53 years since I owned a Harmony guitar. By today,s standards, this guitar would be in the $600.00 range. It is flawless, with plenty of room for neck and intonation adjustments, which it probably won't ever need. Just goes to show how integrity and pride has changed.
Orpheus (Greek mythology) guitars were made by Guyatone under contract for Suzuki in Japan during the 60's to 80's. Orfeus and Orpheus Valley guitars are made in Kremona, Bulgaria since 1924 to this day. Nothing conclusive on the USA made Orpheus, but they may have been a Harmony or Guild badge for Sears, JC Penny or another retail chain.
When I bought my acoustic guitar it comes with 11's but for maby a few monds ago when I had a intonation problem with it I leave it to the music shop and they set it upp with 12's ,very wierd, they said that 12's are standard gauge for steelstring guitars. I think the guitar sounded much better with thicker strings. 10-47 gauge is for week people!
Hi, Dave, I enjoy your videos very much they are both informative and entertaining! I look forward to each and every one! I have searched and cant find one, have you ever done a fret replacement video replacement? I saw once you got a new fret wire bender. I would love to see a detailed video on that process. Oh and more cooking videos :o)
Hi, Dave! I had a little suggestion: Could you maybe do a video about dead spots? I really have no idea what's causing them, why they're there, and if you can 'cure' them!
Got a no-name classical guitar last winter. Buzzed like crazy on the G string. Now that summer is almost here (way humid) the buzz is gone. Is something broken, or just dried out? Wasn't in a case when I got it. String action is in the stratosphere - .040 at the nut, 8/64ths (1/8 inch!) at the 12th fret. Lota filing and sanding in the nut and saddle's future. Thanks for your videos. Educational and funny as hell! LOL!
LOL, bridge deflection. I was at GC picking in their humidor. A couple came in and picked up an over priced acoustic bow & arrow. The mom asks me about this guitar, buying it for their son. Not to say the brand; I told her if they wanted to buy him an arch-top then buy a arch-top. I showed her what I was talking about. The top had a good 1/4" bulge right at the saddle. She put it down & left. Next thing I know the mgr came in and asked me to leave because I was running off their customers. LOL
You mention not using really light gauge strings! Gibson seems to put 11 to 52's on a number of their acoustics. would you look at that as "not right" and re-set-up the guitar with heavier ones? When I tune to Open E, my J45 feels very tight. Is this going to hurt those braces? Or is it hard to answer without seeing the specific guitar?
Hi Dave. I have a moderately high end 1990s acoustic that I've had for a few years. It plays nice but I've always found the volume of it too low considering the quality - my much cheaper Simon and Patrick guitar, for instance, sounds much more resonant and bombastic. The guitar doesn't sound rubbish, quite sweat and mellow, so I'm hoping it can be tweaked for a little more volume and zing. The guitar feels beautiful in the hands. To the naked eye the bridge is secure and no obvious bulges in the body so I'm assuming the bracing is intact. Humidity might be an issue but then my cheaper guitar, kept in the same conditions, sounds peachy so I suspect not. Only things I think might be making a difference are the saddle, which looks like plastic and not even Tusq, and the fact that the action feels a touch lower than any acoustic I've owned so I'm wondering if the strings have enough room to vibrate optimally. Would bone or ivory transmit more vibration and thus more sound and would raising the action just a shade be a possible way to go?
+hammondsphoto I don't know about the construction of the guitar, but thick strings (and thick picks) usually help with volume. Try adjusting the action but low action is usually a good thing. Isn't volume determined primarily by the size of the resonance chamber?
Why don't more acoustic guitars have tailpieces. Had a '67 Gibson B45-12 that had a tailpiece. The neck and the bridge "sank" together. The bridge height was also adjustable. Never had any problems with it. Lost it in a fire. Still miss it.
No one important He must have really taken cared of his guitar. My guitar is currently getting repaired. How many times did you reset the neck on your Grandad's guitar?
People want the feel of an electric guitar out of their acoustic... Two remedies for this: You wimp out by swapping gauges or you put the electric away for a while. Play the acoustic as if you were playing your electric and your electric skills will advance so much further. It's like pulling teeth for a week, but if you can hit 10 hours a day on acoustic... the sky's the limit on them both. I've done this so long that I'm putting heavier gauge strings on my electric. Pickups will need adjustmen
Dave, i spotted a sign on the wall at the end of your video. "....On Duty. Stars Made. Epics Produced. While You Wait" Info please. That's gold. What is it and where can i get one? Thankee.
Mista Dave , please listen to me .. Shaving bone saddle to address action is not good 🤔 The break angle across the bone becomes more shallow because the saddle is so low ,so the string pressure pushing down on the bone is far less,, therefore you lose volume , and overall tone of the guitar.. The only way to address this problem is to do a neck reset to correct the pitch of the neck , then you can install a new saddle bone with the correct height to factory specifications .. 🤷♂️
When I play open or on many freads my guitar's string touch my fread's Line(metal or coppper). What I need to do now?I change string, I change brieg but nothing happen.I buy it about 1 month ago.It is Acoustic. Can you help me?I need litter beat fast. Please help me.
This might be a Little late since i see that your poste is 4 mounths old, but im gonna come with my sugestion anyways. I believe you have to change the angle of the neck.
Hi Dave, thank you for this video. I got a question if you please; I have an Whasburn acoustic guitar, jumbo style. When playing low E string and mostly 5th fret, the body makes a unwanted vibration, a buzz sound.. is this a gluing problem? How can I solve this buzzing. Thanks for your attention Dave
PS. I would probably charge about $60 US to do that so that's about what you're looking at money wise. Any good acoustic guitar tech could probably do it. The tools to do that would be more than $60 US
I have a newer Martin HD 28 (3years old) and it requires so much pressure to fret the strings. I've had it set up and the action is actually lower than any of my other Martin acoustics, but it's still so much work to play. No one can give me an answer as to why this guitar is like this. I wanted to ask you because of all your experience repairing guitars. Do you know why it's like this? And is there anything that can be done?? It just feels so tight to play..
funk- I had put 12's on it and it played totally comfortable. But it didn't sound like it should when it had 13's. I have a Martin mmv also, and the mmv, which is a guitar center custom, with rosewood back and sides, spruce top, all solid wood as well, but has the d 15 bracing, and my HD 28 sounded only as good as my mmv. Which was kinda upsetting to me because the mmv was 1800 compared to the 2800 I paid for the hd28. So to make a long story short I lowered the saddle quite a bit, and now the HD plays totally comfortable with 13's now. I didn't think I could lower it that much but it's great now. Doesn't break up or anything.
If yall want a damn good fender acoustic for around 200$ look at a fender CD60-CE .. acoustic electric.. beautiful necks and frets and onboard decent electronics. I got mine for 170$.. a super budget acoustic that is good but needs some setup help is an epiphone DR-100 .. you can get those DR-100s dirt cheap. I got mine shipped to my door for 99 US dollars.
+Scott Brewer bought a dr 212 twelve string for about 120 bucks slightly used! after set up sound great after set up and tuned down to c# to lose the twang and get the bottom growling! one of the best values in guitars in guitardom!
In Peru, I got a new, lovely Fender CD-60 with hardcase for $148 on sale (no electronics, but managed to get a Dean Markley external pickup) and it works and sounds really fine. It came with good Fender strings and the neck is comfortable enough for medium/small hands like mine. My bud got a Epiphone PRO 1 Ultra with electronics and tuner for $272 and it sounds and plays really good, too. We play Beatles covers and are happy with both of them. Just send it for a set-up to your local tech/luthier and buy a new, good set of strings for it that match the factory ones and that's it!
hi does anyone here know this kind of problem? everytime i pick strings D and G theres a sound like vibrating from the inside i gues? take note (its not buzzing sound) its like theres an echo before the sounds fades away. i mean its really annoying when u here it.. i tried to remove all the strings like almost everything of it except doing things inside. been to 3 guitar shops and tried to ask them but seems they dont know the problem.. its an acoustic guitar by the way.. hope someone could help. thanks!
When the acoustic top sink down doesn't that lowered the action plus with lighter gauge of strings sometime you have to humidify it to bring up the top with moisture but ur risking for the get water into the wood and create mold, yikes !
Typically, when that happened(sinking sound hole), both the neck and bridge deflection changes - thinking of the guitar folding-in on itself. Therefore and with that being said, this results in the action getting higher.
Dave the sink or swim tune was great the first 8000 times we heard it. In fact I quite enjoyed it. Now its like the bass player who needed a place to crash for the weekend. 6 wks ago! Its starting to smell. turn the damn autoplay off!

I've got a Fender F-35 from the same era and it still plays beautifully.
I love Taylor for their neck system. It takes their repair guys less time to tweak the neck angle than adjust the saddle. It's amazing.
I have a Fender F-3 I GOT IN 1980 AND IT'S STILL HUMMIN' AND A BUZZIN' ...In other words, still plays great. Had some work done on it several years ago and corrected a couple of problems...
great videos man! i have seen folks fix suken tops with a wet rag in the sound hole then put back in case
for a few days..It works!
Keep em' humid but not too humid, that can be just as bad. You're looking for around 45-55% humidity ideally.
So much for soaking the guitar in the tub
That was interesting as Im working on one of my old guitars and have the problems you talk about!
I have one of those from mid 70's and it's held up well
If you store your guitar with lowered, or no string tension at all, it could potentially hold-up indefinitely - assuming the humidity is fine
My bass E string sounds kinda dull with little sustain. No buzzing but I’m just not happy with the tone of the E string especially when playing a G. Suggestions? Thanks!
Hey Dave I've got a fender f25 here in Manchester uk,, mines a 1976 in very good condition. Auditorium size not a huge body, no arm ache.

I was going to ask about string gauges on acoustics, thanks.
I guess if you run out saddle and bridge then a neck reset is called for? Thanks good info.

If its new you should send it back for replacement. My guitar is over 30 years old so i expected to have some sort of problem with it.
Hey Dave, have you ever heard of the guitar brand Orpheus? The only info I found is that they are rare..
On the g string of my acoustic, the first and second fret make the same note. How do I fix it?
Beautiful guitar. Also I heard that some guitars can last over 80 years! and how do you fix a loose bracing?
Jirapat Thaenphromrat my grandads guitar is over a hundred years ild and stil playing

Oh I see I see. Thank you! I forgot to say mine is japanese..
Are you going to do a "common bass guitar problems"-video? :)
hi does anyone here know this kind of problem? everytime i pick strings D and G theres a sound like vibrating from the inside i gues? take note (its not buzzing sound) its like theres an echo before the sounds fades away. i mean its really annoying when u here it.. i tried to remove all the strings like almost everything of it except doing things inside. been to 3 guitar shops and tried to ask them but seems they dont know the problem.. its an acoustic guitar by the way.. hope someone could help. thanks!

I tried to send you a message about getting a sticker and they gave me an error message 3 times. What now?
You're the only Canadian I know who says "about" with an American accent!
CluvVenny I have lived in Canada for 20 years and NEVER has anyone said "aboot".
I've heard a couple, I think they were both from Minnesota.
I'm Canadian and the only time we say "aboot" is when we are talking about what we wear on our feet...
zizzinpuss Oh, all you Canadians think you don't say "Soory" and "aboot." Trust me, you do. It might be subtle, but you certainly, most definitely do. This guy's accent is blatantly obvious. "I like to go one two three frets down" every number glaringly accented.
From an upper Michigan native who sometimes sounds distressingly Minnesotan/Norwegian, according to his Florida born wife. :)
Can you show us how you fix nut relief?
How about common bass problems (don't forget fretless bass player) ?
I don't see send a message to get a sticker.but keep the vids coming.
Idea or brain fart. what if the strings went through the heal block from the back or side, of course the guitar wovld have to be contoured for this to work...?
Nice I got the same guitar :)
I wish this guy lived in Ireland.
so wierd looking at that guitar coz its kinda the same like mine
I had a Fender F-35 that I did a Pete Townsend on.
Just like to say I ain't no prude,
No Common Bass Guitar Problems? FML
Kay message sent.
your saying "About" I expected "A-boot"
are you pissed off with youtube dave?
I do not learn anything
So, pretty much this video is about what can go wrong and NOT how to fix it.
He has many videos fixing everything he discusses here. It never hurts to actually look before speaking friend...
شكوبيستاني مر من هنا 🌚🌝
wow first to post. cool
It looks like you have a fake hand stitched onto your arm.
4/64 = 2/32...............he he he
The action yuck
There is interest in your videos but can you not get by without effing and blinding? Don't watch, yes, but that defeats the objective,
Well, it's obvious your an expert on doing that, so I suggest you carry on being plonker of the day, I'm always amazed at the mentality of idiots who they allow on Facebook, meaning you ,
