A coyote scare and a sad goodbye. | Vlog 674

  • Well, we weathered the ice storm with just a firm coating on top of some fresh snow... but it did freeze things again so I can get a few more jobs off the pre-lambing to-do list.
While cleaning manure outside the barn, I came face-to-face with a pretty big coyote. Not the first time I've seen him around these parts, but hoping the last.
Picked up my new water gates which is super exciting!
Mark updated my feed cost spreadsheet for the ewes and lambs.
The internet then proceeded to point out all our emissions on said spreadsheets.
Sunday however, I had to put down a sweet ewe who has all the symptomatology of Maedi Visna.

Exactly. Ditto, I second that. Whatever you say depending on the job and part of the world .
☝️🫵Don't ever let anyone make you feel less than. You are a ROCK STAR in the Sheepping world.
AND A WORD TO THOSE WITH CRITICISM, I won't say fans since us fans don't question what you tell us. We know you don't need to tell everyone your business. That's not how things work unless you are selling someone your business. (I own my own business, i was raised in a family business and i married a SBA banker) i don't care how much people think you should say, if you say half that you are still sharing to much. You say what will help you make your point. If they want more they don't understand how businesses work or work for the Canadian I arrr ess.. the modern day pirates.
You do an excellent job and the relationship you have with Clarissa reminds me of some of my past employees. At a certain point We were all family. You keep being you. Thats why we are here. The closest thing I have to sheep down here in cave creek AZ is a 🫏donkey or 2🫏🫏 a few miles away a few🐐 goats and my 2 sheepishly me felting kits, my friend and i are going to do together.....thats why i haven't started it yet. 🐑

This is what I have learned after watching your videos for about a year...
    You are smart.
    You are caring.
    You are loving.
    You are loyal.
You are a wonderful wife and mother.
You wear your heart on your sleeve and want the best for everyone; animals and humans alike.
You are definitely NOT dumb. Anyone who talks down to you is just trying to bring you down to their level and the opinions of those people don't matter.

@@fia8079 Rather rude. Perhaps you should go back to the videos from mid 2021 when she had some critical, and expensive, testing done and consulted two different vets on all of her ewes. Also, had you listened to the full video you would have heard the name of the illness this ewe had. It is incurable so what was done was to stop the ewe from suffering.

While discussing the spreadsheet, you mentioned there were additional expenses such as gasoline not included. They were the dumb ones for not paying attention. Ex. I used to teach accounting and didn’t teach depreciation until much later. When one of those know it all students would bring it up(trying to prove me wrong) I would just tell them that’s next chapter or next semester and you don’t need to know that yet. Don’t fall for it Sandi. You are the teacher here. 😖❤️

What an amazing woman you are, Sandi. One special character trait I see in you is your passion for sheep; how much you care for your flock, which helps you understand your sheep on how they feel, especially when they are I’ll. I know it’s so hard to say goodbye, but seeing terminally I’ll sheep suffer in pain longer than needed is too much. I’m so proud to see you spend some moments with your sheep, and thanking them for being such a blessing. You know the clues a sheep shares when they agreee, their fatigue, weight loss, labored breathing, loss of wool, no desire to eat or drink, or wander. What compassion you have.

Thank you for sharing all the ups and the downs. It's important for people not to think farming isn't a walk in the park! As you very well know.

After a rough day (night) at work, I was thinking to myself, "wouldn't it be awesome if there was a Sandi vid today as a pick-me-up. And lo and behold! It's funny that watching you work so hard, dealing with painful and frustrating and physically taxing tasks makes me feel connected after working so hard, dealing with painful and frustrating and physically taxing tasks.
I'm know you've expressed appreciation for medical workers in the past. I want to officially thank farmers for the incredibly challenging work *you* do to bring food to the table for us!
You're a gem, Sandi. Thank you for what you do, and for doing it with such kindness and sensitivity. ❤
PS. Does the process of composting kill off viruses or bacteria like the Maedi visna virus? Is it the heat, or maybe does it not survive outside the animals after you spread the compost in the field? I'm so curious about how you fight it from getting back into the ewes' feed? (This is NOT a backhanded criticism - I genuinely know nothing about farming but I'm kind of fascinated by the processes you use to keep the sheep healthy and fight off the ovine plagues that seem to lurk in every corner.)

Thank you for taking care through the end. The coyote report concerned me, can it get to the golden girls? Getting the manure out to the field to be ready when it is time to spread is a huge task. The spreadsheets are fascinating. It would be interesting to see just a list of what is considered "overhead" in running a sheep farm, not the numbers but just each element. It adds to my respect to farmers that supply us with food and other products, like wool.😊😊. Hope you stay safe and warm, not much longer until lambing. Yippee!
