The easiest way to explain things is that Baseball is a Spring and Summer sport, but football is a Fall and Winter sport. They really do not compete with each other.

Absolutely! We are a real mixture of all nations and we are all into where our ancestors came from! We welcome everyone because our ancestors all came from other countries. It is a tragic part of our History how the Native Americans were treated as well as black Americans but fortunately things are much more equal now.

Chicken Fried Steak. Yes, you NEED this. It's steak cutlets that has been pounded and "tenderized", then dunked into a breaded batter and deep fried. Then served on a plate (usually covering nearly the entire plate) and smothered with cream gravy. When done right, you don't need a knife to cut the steak, it's tenderized enough to just cut it with the fork.

The best way to experience America is select a region. Choose a 7 day adventure(minus traveling time to get here) and SELECT A REGION. We are basically split up between 4-5 different 'areas' so to speak. Trying to experience all of America is just impossible unless you can spend a month+. I live by chicago and still learn something new every time I go there for example. The north east corridor, the panhandle, the deep south, all of these areas are so unique and different but each has something amazing about it. First decide what you really want to do. And focus your time on that area. It is like traveling from Portugal to kyiv if you try to experience it all I guess as a comparison.

When you pronounce _Illinois_ , the letter _s_ is silent, so it's pronounced more like _Ilinoy_ .
Yes, I imagine that some people will ask if you're from Russia.
I like some of the accents from Scotland and also Ireland quite a bit. I live in Alabama and have heard accents from people who moved to Alabama or were visiting from Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, Italy, India, Columbia, China, Germany and Poland (four Holocaust survivors).
When I was in my twenties, I worked in a hospital at the information desk and in the gift shop, so the huge majority of those people were hospital employees, office workers, medical staff, volunteers, and such. I loved talking to them and discussing cultures. A lot of them didn't know much or anything about black Americans and our various cultures and how they connected and blended with others. I loved giving my bit of knowledge from my experience as a young black woman.
The four elderly Holocaust survivors were so sweet. They were two married couples who met in a concentration camp, made a vow to survive, did, married and the four were always together. The two men showed me their tattooed numbers on their arms and asked if I knew what they were, and I did.
They were open to discussing some of what they endured, but told me there were things they wouldn't tell me because it would be too much for me to handle. I'm just listening, but they lived it. 😢
Their wives always wore long sleeves because they didn't want people asking questions about the tattoos as it was a hard for them to talk about those times. Understandable.
I liked hearing all four of their accents. Such sweet people who always took time to talk to me as they said I was "an old soul" and it was rare to find someone so young who were interested in their lives. 😢

A “ball park figure” means : give me an estimate of the [cost, distance, length of time] of something. If my car needs some maintenance work, I would ask for an estimate. I don’t want something specific, but an educated guess of the cost-a ball park figure. When I take my 80th birthday road trip from Brownsville, Texas to Durango, Colorado, I will drive somewhere in the ball park of 400 miles each day.

So the accent thing is a real phenomenon. When you're surrounded by a different accent you unintentionally tone it down but when you're around a similar accent it builds up. I used to work with a bunch of Jamaican men. When they got together during lunch their accent became so pronounced that I couldn't keep up.

19:45 Many people, including a LOT of Midwesterners surrounding Illinois, will say "El A Noise" when it should be "El A Noy". I can remember back in the 1970s to the 1990s there was a state slogan to promote the state that I heard in TV ads that said "There's no Noise in Illinois". This referred to both the rural calmness of most of the state along with a reference to the common mispronunciation of the state's name. (I originally from the bordering state of Indiana.)

(This was a large enough reply to -- which sports are popular by season -- that I decided to promote it to full-comment status.)
Basketball is king in Indiana. Its star has been tarnished by the ill-advised splitting of the single-class State Tournament into a multi-class format where schools of different sizes went into separate tournaments. While the split was supposedly to be "fair", many feel that it both relegated smaller schools into pretty-much ignored "lower" tournaments, and starved these schools of the money (normally evenly-split-regardless-of-size gate receipts) now going only to the large schools in the highly-attended large-school tournaments while adding to the small school's expenses by having the first couple of rounds (the Sectional [Section->Regional->Semistate->State rounds]) cover a larger area which incurred higher traveling expenses. This has eroded the importance of the famous "Hoosier Hysteria" of the past. (Mt. Vernon (Indiana) Senior High School, Class of 1981. Class size about 250.) While it was true that usually a small school was out in the first round there were often significant first and second round upsets that were an extreme source of pride for the small schools and their home communities.
One reason for basketball's importance is the extreme rural nature of early 1900's Indiana. Most of the population was spread out across countless tiny and often poor rural towns, each of which often had its own high school (sometimes even combining years into single classrooms because to the small number of students). Basketball was the only sport that was affordable for these poor schools, since to play the only equipment needed was uniforms and a basketball and the only facility needed was a wood-floored court with 10-foot-high baskets on either end. To practice on their own players needed only a plywood backboard and a basketball hoop nailed onto a light/electrical/telephone pole at a height of 10 feet.
Anyone interested in the roots of Indiana's obsession with basketball should check out the historically-based fictional movie "Hoosiers". It is a decent fictionalization.
    ====================================
    Milan, Wikipedia:
The 1954 Milan High School Indians won the Indiana High School Boys Basketball Tournament championship in 1954.[1]
With an enrollment of only 161, Milan was the smallest school ever to win a single-class state basketball title in Indiana, beating the team from the much larger Muncie Central High School in a classic competition known as the Milan Miracle. The team and town are the inspiration for the 1986 film Hoosiers. The team finished its regular season 19-2 and sported a 28-2 overall record.[2][3]
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
    Hoosiers, Wikipedia:
Hoosiers (released in some countries as Best Shot[3]) is a 1986 American sports drama film written by Angelo Pizzo and directed by David Anspaugh in his feature directorial debut. It tells the story of a small-town Indiana high school basketball team that enters the state championship. It is inspired in part by the Milan High School team who won the 1954 state championship.
Gene Hackman stars as Norman Dale, a new coach with a spotty past. The film co-stars Barbara Hershey and Dennis Hopper, whose role as the basketball-loving town drunk earned him an Oscar nomination. Jerry Goldsmith was also nominated for an Academy Award for his score. In 2001, Hoosiers was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."[4][5]
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
    Hoosier Hysteria, Wikipedia:
Hoosier hysteria is the state of excitement surrounding basketball in Indiana or, more specifically, the Indiana high school basketball tournament.[1][2] The most famous example occurred in 1954, when Milan (enrollment 161) defeated Muncie Central (enrollment over 1,600) to win the state title.
Indiana's passion for basketball was observed and written about by basketball's inventor, James Naismith. In 1925, Naismith visited an Indiana basketball state finals game along with 15,000 screaming fans. He later wrote that while it was invented in Massachusetts, "basketball really had its origin in Indiana, which remains the center of the sport." Hoosiers have a traditional love for basketball similar to that of Southerners or Ohioans for football, New Yorkers and New Englanders for baseball, Pennsylvanians and Iowans for wrestling, Michiganders and Minnesotans for ice hockey, and Washingtonians and Oregonians for soccer.

Is get a pork roast , cut up an onion put it in the bottom of crock pot put pork roast on top , add 2 cans of coke or Dr Pepper to the pork , salt and pepper it and cook it till it’s done . Then use 2 forks to shred it . That’s pulled pork . Serve it with sauce or as is , it’s amazing both ways .

We do have minor league teams, and they draw decent crowds, but people tend to talk about going there once in a while because it’s a fun vibe, not because they care about the sport. But football is like a religion, and there are some pretty intense college basketball fans.

    *_Chicken Fried Steak_*
a southern USA specialty best eaten in Texas or oklahoma. it is a beef steak that is usually tenderized by being pounded with a hammer, then coated with breading and (deep) fried in oil/tallow/Drippins, and then topped with a bechamel-based cream gravy.
when served at breakfast, it is typically accompanied by fried eggs, Grits, Biscuits, pancakes, and the like. for lunch/dinner it is normal for the side dishes to be things such as mashed potatoes (with extra gravy), corn, green beans/haricot vert, cooked greens or a salad, dinner rolls, etc.

The size of the United States shocks most Europeans, who think a 3 hour drive is a long trip. It's close to 50 hours of driving to cross the country. Portugal, even including its island possessions, is smaller than the state of Indiana, which isn't a particularly large state. Then there is Alaska, which would be the world's 16th largest country by itself.

Actually baseball is called “Americas favorite pass time”.Baseball is important when it’s baseball season in most cities that have a team. And when it’s football season everyone that loves football is excited about football. I guess many Europeans don’t get that we celebrate ALL of our sports. Because many Europeans don’t have but one sport to rally around you guys seem to find it confusing how we celebrate them all. Like you just did you guys try to narrow one sport down to one area of our country and another sport for another part of the country. When in reality as I said we celebrate all of our sport teams around our country.

You should react to more of Shaun's content. He has traveled quite a bit across the U.S. He also has many travel vids of Brazil as his wife is from there but they live in Scotland. I believe they spent the pandemic in Brazil though. These were the first content creators that I subscribed to many years ago. I love Shaun because he eats in more restaurants than fast food joints. He likes to eat all the local cuisines, etc.

I have studied Russian, so I knew you weren't Russian. But I did think you were from Eastern Europe; the Portuguese accent is very rare in this country. But I am certain you will be asked to speak in your accent when you visit, so perhaps prepare a few phrases so you don't get caught off-guard (as my Londoner husband frequently was)
The free zoo is Lincoln Park Zoo. As a child, my dad had a boat in Diversey Harbor, which is only a few blocks away, so I spent many days wandering around there with my sister. Even then they had some amazing exhibits, and as I understand, they've always improved. What I didn't understand then was their "Farm in the Zoo" which housed common barnyard and backyard animals (like raccoons) - then I married a city boy and realized what I took for granted, most city kids had only encountered in books.

To give you an idea about driving through Texas. If you go through Texas at it's widest points from East to West it will take you a day & a half. I know as I've had to do it several times. Other states you may get through rapidly because they're so small, others it will take 8-12 hours depending on traffic. You hit Texas and the feeling of "are we there yet" really hits hard when you want to get to the next state's border. :-)
Also, there are some very beautiful areas in the Midwest that people never mention because they never go there. Visitors always hit the really big cities like NYC, Chicago, L.A., Miami, etc. Ohio, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Kentucky & Tennessee (yes I know they're in the South), etc. So much to see here if your into natural land beauty because of both the National & State parks and also some very nice cities.

Seattle is similar, as to weather and people's temperament, but Portland has generally been considered the most European of American cities over the last half century or so. We catch a lot of hell for that, actually. I would suggest that Vancouver, BC, Canada would feel even more European, though.

I attended a church here in Ohio that the pastor was from Ohio but his wife was from Texas. As they were getting ready to leave home one morning to visit a church in another city in Ohio, she asked if they would get there that day. You can go from one corner of Ohio to the other in a day easily, compared to Texas where it can take two days or more to cross the state.

I do hope you get the opportunity of coming here and spending some time exploring the different areas. If you want to go to Chicago and Texas in the same trip, springtime would be best. Chicago has very cold winters, and Texas is hot all summer.

I like your accent and wouldn't have recognized it as you being from Portugal. You'll definitely be asked where you are from.
I am asked that almost daily and I am from the USA. I moved to the Smoky Mountains area 20 years ago after being born and raised in the Pacific Northwest.
Even I had a culture shock because the Southern culture is so much different than where I grew up. The food, language differences, architecture, and especially the historical atmosphere. There are civil war echoes everywhere here.
I still get asked where I am from because of my accent. But the funny thing is that when I talk to old friends in my birth state, they all tell me I sound Southern now. I have become a mutt ..my accent doesn't match anywhere anymore.😂

@@user-calm_salty How did you guess what my name is about? Not just accents, everything. We pick up new things as we go through life. Some nice, some not so nice. But put it all together and it becomes a pretty mixed bouquet, weeds and all. 🙂 I also lived in two more states before landing here. Each area has been different from the last (especially Arizona) but it wasn't until I made it here that I strongly felt a shift in culture and drastic accent changes. It took a good 10 years for me to be able to tell the different Southern accents apart. They all sounded the same until I lived here a while.
I just found these reaction channels and am enjoying them very much. He's become my favorite one to watch and I can't wait to see what else he discovers.

The state of Michigan is on the other (east) side of the lake. Chicago is in Illinois, on the southwest side of the lake. Wisconsin also borders Lake Michigan, on the northwest side, and Indiana has a bit of shore on the southeast side. (It's a fairly substantial lake. More than half the size of Portugal.)
My mom's side of the family has a small amount of Scottish ancestry, a few generations back. (There was a man named Kim Estes, in the nineteenth century IIRC.) Come to think of it, my maternal grandmother's maiden name, McCready, could also be of ultimately Scottish origin, but I don't think that line has been traced all the way back to immigration, so we don't really know the details.
