I hope AMTK 54 can at least get repaired. That P42 has one of the best, if not the best NF K5LA on Amtrak currently. AMTK 161 is now the second Phase 1 HU that Amtrak has lost. I remember seeing 156 on the Texas Eagle in 2018 before it was wrecked. 161 Also came on the Texas Eagle a lot in the past year.
I remember some of the corrugated passenger cars Amtrak took out of service. Around 1979, I saw some of them had been burned for whatever reason when I was in Fullerton, California. A lot of those beautiful corrugated passenger cars were built by the Budd company in the 1940's. Amtrak got them after freight train railroads saw it was beyond impractical for freight train railroads to provide passenger service. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
@@WarrensTrainsouch. hurts to see this locomotive go through (what will probably be) a career ending accident like this, but im glad nobody was hurt. seeing 161 in flames like that gave me flashbacks to TTTE season 5.

I mean, personally I'd argue 164 is more of a freestanding unit, not for 50th Anniversary, but replacement for 184... But at the same time, 184 is now operational, so I don't quite understand why they repainted a different unit into the same scheme rather than repainting 184 if it was truly necessary, since it is still operational. My main point being, 164 doesn't have "1971-2021" or "50 - Amtrak" like the other 50th Anniversary units have, and was released in early-mid 2023 (late 2022?), not 2021. I sure would love to know the inside scoop as to why that decision was made, but I digress; point being I personally don't consider 164 as 50th Anniversary
At the time of 184’s servicing, Amtrak didn’t have paint supplies for Phase IV, so they just used whatever they had. But when 164 was sent in for maintenance, Amtrak received the needed paint supplies and painted it on 164 instead. The unit later rolled out into service in either March or April 2023.
The cause is currently under investigation, however it was either sabotage or extreme engine failure. I'm going to go with the latter option. A few people have said sabotage/arson, but with the cameras covering the area and the security going into the yard (trust me, I almost got arrested trying to find a place to record this video), I don't think that is a realistic possibility.
54 looks like a very easy fix, she’ll be back in service in no time! Glad the damage wasn’t too bad on it. While I still think #46 has the best K5LA in the fleet I will say the K5LA 54 has is easily in 2nd place competing with the 46 50 anniversary unit!
I'm gonna be going to Ivy City every time I get the chance to post updates about the scrapping process, really sad to see this happen, but atleast I've seen it a decent bit. I know there was some people who really wanted to see it and that sucks.

It may have been a #359 and I misremembered. Let me check my sources again. Since it was uncoupled after the incident I didn't see it when I recorded this, I just remember seeing a picture with the back being toast and being able to see the number. I know for sure it was 3x9

I’m more concerned about 54 than 161. 54 has a PERFECT narrow font K5LA. Glad I got to see it twice just recently. I’m sure it’ll be fine though. As for 161, sucks to see it go. I’m sure we’ll see phase 1 painted onto another unit.
Regardless of the Siemens locomotives coming onto Amtrak i really don't care.
