I'd advise Jess to plant the roses in the ground .They survive and thrive in rock hard clay and don't love pots too much 🙂I use heavy duty plastic each winter after adding manure and each spring I fold and store but I'm left with perfect warm soil in spring . It was only £10 for 4mts X2 MTs and it's still perfect 5 years on .

We don't have the soil for them in the front garden so the giant pots was the best we could do! Followed all the advice from David Austin so fingers crossed for them! Thanks Susie

Nice crop JB. Leeks, carrots, and parsnips .You need a head lamp to stretch the day out.
I made up a hot bed 4 meters by 1 meter wide 60cm high in the middle of my tunnel using a mixture of coffee grounds 15%, grass 15%, comfrey 15% , spent hops15% and 40% fine wood chip . It reaches 70C with just a slab of insulation on top. Just waiting for it to settle to add completed compost. The only problem at moment is the amount of moisture it generates.
If you put leaves at the base of your beds they will retain some of the leeching nutrients.

A very productive day for you JB. Great to have all that manure to put on your beds even if it is stinky. Crops will grow really well in that. Amazing carrot 🥕 mine were all wonkey but have planted more in the polytunnel so fingers crossed 🤞 they'll turn out straight. Love parsnips must be fabulous to have nice fresh home grown ones to cook. Shame about your leeks, I need to check mine, they are the ones Danny gave me to plant. Happy gardening to you and Jess ❤

Wow you have got a great work ethic and when things are not as expected you have worked your way through and just get on with it
    - having defined edged beds will allow you to task yourself to weed/plant one bed at a time and I feel it will be less stressful because it is more achievable
    - hole in the poly tunnel..... how are we going to repair this? and how to stop it happening again
    - triumphs a carrot and a good looking parsnip 👍
    - set backs leaf miner....... you already have the solution, next year cover with a fine netting frame
You have certainly found your mojo this year and have worked through those tough times brilliantly.
Here's to new adventures in the new year

Great video, i totally agree with the poly culture idea, it just makes sense to me as its how plants would grow naturally as opposed to a mono culture. I often fantasize about an allotment van, in fact a morris minor van is top of my lottery win list. Your not alone in carrot failure.

Hey JB, the Potty mouth soft launch was fun and then the first one with you four was great too. Welcome back all. Isn't a surprise harvest the best ?! First that carrot wow 🤩 and then the parsnip incredible! Whoop. I am hoping the two that I have left will be as good. I am saving them for the Christmas table this year. Shame about the leaf miner, I here it is now endemic on most allotment plots and I have even found it in my garden. My elephant garlic suffered a bit last year as I didn't cover it. An now there is a new allium pest in town, allium aphid. That struck my garlic horribly last year. And it was covered. I still had a harvest but it was a bit reduced as the aphids reduced the vigourness ( is that a word 🤔)
Your beds will be might next year. Good going. And I am glad that getting out and physical on the plot lifted your spirits. The great outdoors does it again, why do we doubt it ☺

That hippo "garden gnome" looked so cool 😃Grats on growing a carrot!!! 🥳Who knows. Maybe I will succeed with my nemeses (tomatoes) next year! 🤞Haha nice woodchip dance 🤣

Such a productive few weeks on the plot JB. It’s changed massively and we can all see how you’ve inspired yourself as much as us.
Shame about the leaf miner. The parsnips and carrots were very impressive
I’ve been toying with a hotbed but thought I might just do it on top of one of my manure store pallet bins. It’s all fresh in there, and generating a lot of heat. Can use my plastic cloches for a bit of warmth.
Good to see Jess enjoying her project too

    • @JBNat
      @JBNat  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes those pallet bins are basically a ready made hot bed! If you just built a small bed on top of that and put about 6inches of compost you'd probably be good to go!

@@JBNat yeah. That’s what Charles Dowding does isn’t it? Pretty sure that would work for us too.

JB, thank you for sharing such a fabulous video. Jess's roses are looking good and she is doing a fine job in your garden 👏👏. As for your allotment, wow, a truly great transformation. Things are really coming together for you. Great parsnip by the way 👍 I've taken a couple from my allotment and they are huge, so, like you, we should have some tasty parsnips for the festive period. As for your leeks, I had a great harvest last year but lost every one of my leeks this year (and I grow a lot) to Allium Leaf Miner. I pulled them up as soon as I spotted the pests and have duly disposed of the material away from the allotment. I am a strong advocate of crop rotation and with a large plot I won't be growing onions, shallots, leeks in that bed for some time. Nevermind, as you say, insect mesh will be used next season. Once again, a great video and you've made so much progress despite the pressures of work,. Well done, you should be pleased but make sure you get some time to rest. Paul

I got a bulk delviery to the plot of manure from Hampshire Garden Supplies. Probs would be a higher delivery charge for you in Portsmouth but £44 for 1000l of manure is a bargain even with delivery (was £30 to me, they are in between Southampton and Portsmouth)

Great video today JB you no I had chicken manure on my garden bed and the rain was just falling every day never get anything else done with it so maybe all the nitrogen and whatever else was in there went down to the bottom, and yes when it’s wet it’s so much trouble to work with, Jess it was very nice seeing you today ❤

I love that Jess is getting more into gardening. I wish we could grow all the roses you can in the U.K. here in Ontario, Canada. Love the hotbed idea. Charles Dowding did one in his polytunnel, I believe he started seeds on it. Love to try this myself but I am still waiting for my greenhouse to be built. lol

I love a creepy ghost story especially a Christmas ghost story. If you haven't already, check out M.R. James. I haven't listened to his audio books, only watched the TV adaptations, not everybody's cup of tea but some of them leave me cold.

Leaf miner is such a pain. Make sure you don't put the leaves on your compost heap otherwise you'll have them in every bed as they survive in the soil. If they're in the soil then netting won't help

Andy the Landy was a gift from my husband when he retired from the RAF after 30 years. Making up for being away so much, all be it doing a great job. Literally all my birthday s at once🎉!
I'm very grateful and smile every time I drive it, especially when I get a little wave from other Landy owners.
We live in deepest Norfolk So also it's essential kit for the terrain, dogs, camoing gear, paddle boards and the all important allotment TD5 short wheel in dark green. Once driven never forgotten, V
