- You can now buy Soviet GP-5 Gas masks directly through Amazon Prime and have them delivered the very next day.
I ordered one out of curiosity, the mask came with a bag, filter, and anti-fog inserts in a cardboard box, once opened you can store everything inside the bag.
The mask is very clean and still coated in its original talcum powder.
This was a Size 2 mask and cost around £14, the price seems to vary depending on mask size and stock.

Just got mine in the post from Amazon. Thanks so much I’ve always wanted one of these and now that coronavirus is a thing I finally have a reason to get one. The filter is even sealed and seems to be in good condition. Thanks for the video, I never knew that gas masks were available on Amazon.

Because that's an older video, they're all confirmed to contain asbestos now so you should never use the original filters.

Got a GP-5 at a surplus store this week, was pleasantly surprised to find out it came with a C2A1 filter not a Soviet one with Asbestos in it, it doesn't fit on alll the wayy, but it's tight enough to stay on and air tight, I have no clue how lucky i am to get a Modern Clean filter instead of a Soviet Lung Bomb, but I'd imagine decently.
That's great as C2A1 filters are like $20+ normally

Mine just arrived. It came with the mask and the bag, and I had a filter at home. I'm very happy with it
Something to be mentioned as I am a brand new collection starter: When you by the mask (after you wash it) it will be extremely tight even if it's your size. Try to stretch it by pulling it. Ie, keep it constantly pulled for a couple of minutes (if you are fit enough lol). Then It will be just fine. The very first one that I've just got is a GP5. C 1976 (Comrade Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev era)... It also says Φ1174 which I assume is the assembly line. Today I bought a GP4 as well. In terms of filters, I order masks without any. I bought a Drager canister. GP5 seems to work ok. It was shipped from Ukraine near the border with Russia and instead of 3-4 weeks it arrived in 1. Wow.

According to the current amazon listings for these, they come with an asbestos-free activated-charcoal filter now. I'm curious as to whether or not they still work as good.
The seller is lying again... They still contain asbestos.
It's the cardbord inside the filter that has the asbestos. The coal itself is nothing to care about.

I know it's and old vid but, I think the y next to 2 is actually ''u'' in russian alphabet. I think it stands for умеренный which means medium (medium size) or something like that. :)
Mine just came in the mail today. I picked up the black one, gonna have to clean it when I have the time because it seems to have little black specks inside. It does not seem like talcum powder nor do I think it is the rubber breaking down because I notice no cracks. Will have to take a closer look.

Well Amazon Prime has their reasons, I believe within reason that GP-5 filters are allowed to be bought and sold with the understanding it is not intended for use, only collection!
It depends on the country, here in the UK it is illegal to sell or give away any item known to contain asbestos, but the law isn't enforced.
Same in Australia, but you see tons of WW2 kits being sold here without trouble. Tbh I don't mind things being the way they are as most buyers are collectors or museum owners (cost is very high as well to deter inexperienced buyers). So it is a safe system for now I would say...
Yeah as long as someone doesn't cause a stink over it hopefully the law stays as is, a while ago the British Government tried to pressure the Imperial War Museum to destroy their respirator collection because "asbestos", thankfully I think they just put some glue into the filters in the end.
The "extra lenses" are for cold weather you place them on in side to stop it from fogging up.
They are generic anti-fog inserts, not designed for cold weather, as gas masks will fog up due to humidity alone.
If you don't mind me asking, what filter are you using?
Polish ABEK filters, did a video on them. When the Soviet Union collapsed, Poland modernised the filters to meet NATO standards but had the GOST screw. They're technically expired but still work from testing, more importantly, they're safe.

If that’s true, BE CAREFUL! N95 is NOT a gas filter. It’s a particle (aka dust) filter, and can filter some aerosols to a point. I’ve been in close to a dozen tear gas clouds with an N95 on and it did NOTHING to protect me. The officers deploying the chemical agent wore gas masks, but as part of the medical response team, all I got was an N95.
Weirdly, when I saw these on Amazon, they were claiming that they were reproduction even though that’s blatantly not true
The Y stands for the rubber. For example, a size 2y has thinner, and more stretchy rubber compared to a size 2. More or less just when the mask was produced.

I remember how my uncle brought me home one of these as a gift. I thought the talc was asbestos.
Probably not a good idea to breath it in but it's basically just rubber/preservative residue. I've had some masks where the talc was so thick it took several cleaning attempts to make the masks wearable. Bulgarian masks were the worst offenders.
Also, just as a quick side note, where can I get modern day filters that won't give me a horrible lung disease?

40MM nato filters,they don’t make a tight seal. But you CAN force them on (gp-5’s use a different MM but you can force 40MM on)

As you may know, as long as the filter was made after 1992, it contains little asbestos and is much safer to use.
If it contains any asbestos it is NOT SAFE to use.

@@Weaponsandstuff93 fr, I got the FP-5 and it works well with my GP5. FP-5 is a Polish filter used in the Polish had mask MP-5 used by the polish military but currently being replaced by the new MP-6

i bought one with an activated charcoal so the filter is safe but you can get separate filters if anyone in the comments is wondering.
Is it a Soviet green filter? If so the seller sold you an asbestos filter and lied. All gas mask filters contain activated charcoal, or else they would not work.
Is it a good idea to wear a mask (i.e. a gp5) without a filter as a prop?

Wearing it without a filter is perfectly safe but the mask is useless, and it's a Polish ABE filter from the 1990s.

Well regular NATO filters won't fit, you'll need a GOST or standardised filter.

A Polish ABE GOST filter made in the 1990s, they don't make those anymore so you'd need to get a Russian army filter from around now.

I bought 2 from Fleet Farm here in the United States. Where were you able to get the Modern filters? Did you need an adapter to make the modern filter work?
That depends, GP-5s take GOST filters, standard 40mm filters are STANAG, it's a different screw so STANAG can't go into GOST without forcing it in, potentially damaging the screw on the mask.
You need to find modern GOST filters on eBay or elsewhere.
