      This insane masterpiece is made from the point of view of a detective.
      Watch fom 2:00 to 2:16
      The psyshic situation of Batou´s inner reallity and from his inner feelings is witnessed by himself in Connection with the dog. The same way he internaly sees himself for that scene the dogs sees it too in the fish bowl creating a double connected vision (the detective´s view)... He stablishes a psychic connection with dog or better said the dog has a psychic spontaneous connection with Batou (from Batous reality). He also sees everybody else living in the same psychic world after Motokos incident (from SAC2). Trully insane.

      Mamoru Oshii, the film's director, has a Basset Hound that he likes to bring to the office. He often had his animators use the dog for reference. As you might be able to tell from the scene, it was a very well-fed dog.

    Like the major, Batou has struggled with the idea of his ghost not really existing. This scene shows how the depth of his humanity. everything he does for his dog shows such tenderness. his role in section 9 doesn't leave much room for personal investments. but this simple action shines through.

    • @PrezPendejo
      @PrezPendejo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +168

      I think it's also important that the dog still considers him human. The dog can obviously tell his body is artificial but it responds to him like it would a person and not an object.

    • @gatotsu2501
      @gatotsu2501 6 ปีที่แล้ว +109

      It also shows why he can’t follow the Major into the cyber-world; even with his body mostly machine, he can’t relinquish the “innocent” emotion of love that binds him to the material world, thus he can’t ascend to her fully digitized state of being where such feelings and bodily sensations no longer exist.

    • @constraintautomaton9547
      @constraintautomaton9547 4 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      I don't think Batou really struggles with this. It was the major in the first film, it implies with the scene at the morgue that in a past that it never represented he struggle with that.
      In the movie, I think he struggles more about the disappearance of the major.

    • @thesilverstevo
      @thesilverstevo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      The commen theme of Batou is his struggle with self or identity . I fully agree with your statement, you get a bigger sense of it when compareing him against Togusa. Togusa has many things in life that define him, his family, his gun, and even his partly natural body. Togusa doesnt spend any time questioning himself when it comes to identity, his identity is well solidify, however Batou's isn't. He's a blank slate who tries to pick up multiple hobbies to make himself different then all other cybogs. Weight training equipment, the sports car, boxing, his care over tachakoma, and the dog. However in the end each one is ruined for him, making Batou more uncertain of his ghost and identity.

    It's such a rare thing for animated movies to do this (at least western) they often try to cram things into the movie (often because they're trying to get things done in such a short time), things need to be constantly going. They don't generally take the time for things like this, it's animated so they need to warrent its nature with constant animation and flash, they forget to be movies first. But this, it knows it can be quiet. It's simple but it's beautiful. And the animation can still be a specticle this way, the way it's crafted is masterful, the detail and care phenomenal.

    • @Valzahd
      @Valzahd 8 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      +jrupert1 It reminds me a lot of the moments with Deckard in his apartment in Blade Runner. Sometimes the best way to establish a character is with quiet moments like this.

    • @clydeyello
      @clydeyello 8 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      +jrupert1 It has to be said tho: Ghost In The Shell is very unusual even for the standards of Japanese animation. As a matter of fact, both GITS and Innocence are anime that someone who's not into anime can appreciate.

    • @wh3nderson95
      @wh3nderson95 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      jrupert1 As much as I am inclined to agree. Animation is still a nish market in Japan. When a company invests so much money in a film and only to do get mixed to below average in sales. It's difficult to for them to deal with.
      Studio Gibli closed because their movies couldn't consistently make money.
      Which is a crying shame. I love animation and the works that comes from it. Both Western and Eastern.

    I feel like in a lot of ways Batou brings a lot of heart to the Ghost in the Shell franchise. Between this dog, Motoko in both the movies and the SAC, and the tachikomas on the show, he continues to care for all of them as individuals no matter what existential self-questioning he hears out of the Major. Togusa may be the family man, but Batou is sort of more able to emotionally connect on some levels in this world.

      Considering his time in the Ranger, he has seen a lot of horrifying things. It's the variety of life experiences that probably made him tougher on the outside and even softer on the inside. You can definitely see the differences between him and Togusa in terms of how they handle dangerous criminals.

    Kimikoh Itoh song goes so well with this scene. This probably is a favorite scene for many people. Shadowing on his face when he checks his feet, spraying down the sole (Im already laughing at this point). Gently lifting the hound's ears. Facial muscle movement with that first sip of beer. Fingers flipping hologram card. Also you are led to "see" things that are not showing in the screen, like the dog poop and Batou signaling dog to eat. Not a single word spoken but you get the feels ಠ_ಥ The dog animation I think was what the director said where they put the most effort in one of the interviews

    I feel sorry for those that don't know about Ghost In The Shell
    It's richness in moments like this that go beyond fan service and actually only mandates that you give attention to the simple things such as caring for the little things.
    How being tender in the most mundane tasks can translate to being more human than most people today as the importance in the most boring tasks is what matters the most.
    This right here is what I love about how immersive Ghost in the Shell is.

    "The dog Gabriel, looking once more like the only "real" being, makes a key appearance, as in many of Oshii's movies. A scene with Batou feeding his dog is echoed in Ash in Avalon (2001). He explained the reason why all his films feature a basset hound-his companion in real life: "This body you see before you is an empty shell. The dog represents my body. Human beings can be free only if they free themselves from their bodies. When I am playing around with my dog, I forget that I am a human being, and it's only then that I feel free.""

    I love this scene. It says so much about a Man who has given everything to his City & Nation, even his body & pieces of his soul.
    All he wants is a home for his Dog, food for his dog since he himself doesn't need to 'eat', & a recliner so his Dog has a place to sleep when he's either there or not there. Everything you need to know about Batou is right there. Show, don't Tell 1000%.

      Very well said, honestly i couldn’t of said it better.
      The thing to also mention if i may, is that there are people like this who exist all over the world, not in the sense of being cyborgs but in the fact that they devote themselves tirelessly and often thanklessly to helping others and just doing “ a good job “
      I don’t know if anyone will read this but if you do, know that there will be some nights where you are solitary and on your lonesome, do take care of yourselves and know that during my nights, i’ll be toasting a cheers to wherever you might be.
