How do you know you're headed in the right direction, career-wise? Write a song at the age of 13, release it independently, and have it clock more than 50 million streams on the music services. That's what happened to AJ Mitchell and "Used To Be." Our new LIFT artist, now 18 years old, has flaunted both craft and charisma for several years now, initially earning himself a strong following with his R&B covers on TH-cam, and then releasing his own material on 2018's 'Hopeful' EP. From "Girls" to "All My Friends" to "Slow Dance," his recent string of tracks is so impressive we just couldn't get AJ out of our heads. So we invited him to be part of the LIFT program, and headed out to a gorgeously desolate Illinois drive-in to catch him at work. That's where we captured the perfectly moody performance of "Down In Flames." Then we hit his hometown to have AJ show us around, and contextualize all the regional elements that inspired him to start making music in the first place. Fans will learn a lot from our exclusive portrait, 'Life Is A Grand Adventure.'

Love this! For one I am beyond in love with your home town, it’s everything in my wildest dreams running through the fields. I grew up in a small town and spent majority of my childhood in our woodlands. Nature and music were my getaways from some really tough moments in my childhood, and to be fair still from the ones that are hanging onto me through out my early adult hood too. But I’m beyond grateful to you for sharing this, felt like a home from home for me. Without music artists sharing their incredible skills I’m not sure where I would be right now it has helped me tremendously. Blessed to see this and listen to your music, I appreciate it so much 🙏🏽
