I have a very disappointing experience with my Edge 840. Navigation is hard to see and follow, the colors make no sense especially on the sun with sunglasses. Ad hock navigation is not reliable. I was 4kms in a straight line to the beginning of a bike race in Granada. It calculated a 25kms route to get there! It’s just unreliable. Had to use google maps to get there. Also the integration with the phone it’s crazy slow. Finish a route, takes more then 45m to upload to Garmin connect. Also to download routes takes forever. Stop creating new features and work on the core functions.
To the comment on the brightness and contrast of the screen: DC Rainmaker's review pointed out that the Solar version of the 840 is a little less bright than the regular version. With that and solar not adding much battery life at all, I went for the regular 840.
Thanks for the video ! Still toying with the idea of upgrading to the 840 from my 530...It does all I need except when it comes to map zooming in/out and scrolling to get a better sense of the route ahead. That's likely much easier to do on the 840 ?
It is easier, but without wishing to dissuade you if you really desire an 840, I'm not sure it's a game changer versus the 530. It's still only the same size screen, even if you can noodle around it via touchscreen.
@@SportivecyclistThanks, yes the reasonable choice is to stick with the 530 and wait for something "really" better/different, like an Amoled version maybe. The map is only really a problem when you start your route in an unknown area and it's hard to make out which way you need to head out. The best thing to do is probably to pull out your smartphone with the GPX loaded onto it.
I am not a fan. The battery is weak. The sleep function is horrible - guaranteed dead battery, doesn't connect to well to blue tooth, too much BS. Too many menus, screens and crap. Solar is a joke (living FL and it doesn't to anything). Loved my 540. This is not an upgrade.
Ha! No idea Rick. I'm afraid Garmin don't deign to share any pre-release info with this micro-Tuber. My only thought is that not every model gets a 'Plus'. I think both the 1030 (because it was underpowered) and the 520 (can't remember - needed proper navigation?) needed a between generation upgrade. I am not sure that's the case with the current 1040.
Great. All good points. I have the same and it has worked well for me. I got the solar on price promotion, so was only about a tenner more than the non-solar version. Like you, l get a few minutes gain on rides. Work well in my Garmin eco system using power pedals and Epix as well as other Ant/Bluetooth devices. So, yes, I’m pleased with it.
I hated this thing after four rides. Crazy complex to set up. Terrible UI Screen reflective in sunlight. Yes, on a bike computer! New functionality would come on out of nowhere while riding that I didn't want and didn't ask for. Would stop collecting data while riding or disconnect from Di2. Constantly bugging me to login to social media. Does Garmin collect and sell your data? I finally got some peace by disconnecting it and putting in my jersey back pocket while riding. I can't wait to return this thing. I will probably try the Wahoo although my Apple Watch Ultra is enough for now.
Only one quirk I have about my 840 is taking it off charging. The screen just sits idol saying press any key to load. I have to hold the Power Button for 10 to 15 seconds to force it to turn off then it comes back on by itself and then loads the main screen for use, then just lick the Power Button again to turn the device off. Garmin need to fix this.
Started watching this vid for the climb pro screen w/map in the title screen. Turned out it’s not 840 and it’s misleading. Lost interest in the bla bla after that - probably as inaccurate as the title screen. Go figure!
Can't dispute the blah blah, but I can definitely confirm that's my 840 on the thumbnail. Took the footage on the climb up to Avoriaz from Montriand, last July (the day the tour finished in Morzine)
If you mean spoken instructions then no. I *think* the 1050 might have just got this (it's certainly got improved speakers) but I don't own one yet. The 840 is still 'a beeper' only...
Correcto, the "3rd person" shots are the Insta360 X3. It's pretty amazing. The first person shots on the bike tend to be an old GoPro Hero. Maybe a 5, so I think I will upgrade that soon.

Can the edge 840 perform turn by turn voice navigation though my iphone via bluetooth ?
