This song and the speed and clarity with which Schon plays it was the precursor to the power guitar instrumental style popularized by Joe Satriani in such albums as Surfing with the Alien. A great listen!

Months later, the band completed its most saccharine lineup with the addition of Jonathan Cain after Gregg Rolie, tired of the road and the musical direction of the band, decided to retire. Journey's next album, Escape, reached No. 1 on the charts with such "classics" as Open Arms, Don't Stop Believing, and Who's Crying Now. Perry and Schon quickly forged a musical partnership, leaning towards ballads such as Open Arms and the pussification of guitar solos such as the one in Who's Crying Now.
Live versions on Who’s Crying Now are much better for that reason. I believe I read at one point that Neal insisted on adding that solo at the end of the song since Perry just wanted to leave it as more of a ballad. That’s really what made the song for me. Open Arms is a letdown for the lack of any instrumental portions.
At that time the Japanese video and sound engineers were about the best in the world. It is so telling that many of the great live videos for many groups were recorded in Europe and Japan. In the US serious capture of live performances was lacking.

i can't believe this is the same band which recorded "Separate ways". Totally different style than 80s pop rock they are known for, more in the jazz-fusion category similar to Mahavischnu Orchestra
It's too bad that we can't hear Schon's octave divider pedal. I had a tape of the Westwood One broadcast recording of this show. It must have been a different "tap" of the board mix because you could hear Neal's octave divider much better. I think he was splitting a dry cab and an effects cab. I'm pretty sure it was from the same night because the feedback notes are the same.
I always wondered if they still played their pre-Steve Perry insrtumental stuff live when Steve Perry was in the band--now I have my answer. Wonder what Steve Perry was doing during the performance--he had two choices, I guess: Goof around on stage dancing with a tambourine in his hand while they play, or use the time to make out with a groupie backstage? I'm guessing he did the latter!
Oh why did they not head to Europe then, where their immense talents would of been highly appreciated, and the Na Na's and La La's would never occurred and even more talent growth would of been allowed to blossom? What a shame artistically speaking
I saw them open up for Emerson Lake and Palmer in 1976. This is when Journey could Rock. Progressive rock and fusion before Steve the fairy Perry came along and ruined it😢
Nothing against Arnel, but Journey desperately needs to go back to a 4-piece group, or at least drop the whole 'front-man thing'. They've already had their fame and success, heck, they're in the RnRHF for crying out loud. They need to go back to this style where they focused on the music rather than record sales.
As good as Steve Smith is, he's no Dunbar, Aynsley smokes on the original and live versions of this track with a much better groove too, especially during Schon's solo. Interesting how the version here is slowed down a bit. .
I have first 3 Journey albums, they are the only ones I like. Journey went from a progressive rock band to a pop band not after Gregg Rolie left. Jonathan Cain was from the pop group The Babys. First album with Steve perry was ok , he shared singing with Gregg Rolie.
@@richardjames7382 Listen to Dream After Dream from 1981 only released in Japan, as it would of bombed in N America, the teenyboppers would of rebelled. Rolie's last album.
This tour seems to be a transition between old/original Journey, more progressive, jam session, orignal influences and the «new« Steve Perry, more melodic, voice centered Journey. Interesting.
As far as I can tell a representative of the record company told the band the next album needed to sell better ( reach at least a million units ) or they'd get dropped. So what else could they have done? Then, when Rolie left he recommended to the band that they get Cain to replace him. Some of you people have so much anger, needing someone to blame, for stuff that happened over 40 years ago that isn't even a true tragedy.
They could of done what Rush did, but then again, at least Rush's record company pushed the hell out of 2112, which Journey's reps never did, nor have them do long tours in Europe where this incarnation, could of opened for Gentle Giant, Hawkwind etc , then played smaller venues, and been in their pocket and where they would of been far more appreciated.
THE master NEAL SCHON,! malmsteen! Said ! on fc,you are a first class gay, and a hell off a guitarist!, NEAL has soo many rock friends! and he`s being there fore ever..
Steve Smith and Steve Perry were not in the band in 74 or 75. Aynsley Dunbar would still be in the band, George Tickner would be playing rhythm guitar.
Yeah pry86, i like them to but everyone knows before Steve Perry, they couldt' get on the radio. Herbie will telll u that! With Perry as there front man it brought Journey into new dimension With Perry, Valory, Schon, Smith as a whole that's what put Journey on the map. But maybe u r too young to remember this, or u haven't done your Journey homework!1
Good thing Rush didn't have Herbie then isn't it, no bubble gum form them, EVER. Were in the exact same situation as Journey, but told management to stick it up their A%^. Journey never go their 2112 et al. moment. Thanks Herbie
What did Perry do before or after Journey on HIS own dope. NOTHING...he is just another singer without those top shelf musicians behind him. The music definitely took a nose dive after Rollie left. I will take him over Perry any day of the week.
@@TheTayedrums Have you tried their Dream After Dream soundtrack from the Japanese Movie of the same name. It is the only thing with Perry that is not pop, etc., and why they never released it in North America as the teeny boppers would of lost their minds. It is "out there"
This was Back when Journey showed the real musical talent of each member and then came some guy named steve perrry who ( with their management ) took all this talent away and went commercial and made lots of money,,,,I prefer the old ( original ) Journey...NOT Steve Perry,,,but, that's just my opinion...
Todd Stevens I was talking about the band, not individual members. I agree Gregg has gone to play great music, just not with Journey. With me, music is all about the voice, so the original 3 albums of fusion, with endless guitar solos, do not really interest me, other than the fact that Neal plays an awesome guitar. I prefer my rock music to have lyrics, and a great voice to sing them. Each to their own.
That is not "rock" Dale, it is "pop" music, and I agree to each their own. So I take it then that since instrumentation is of no interest to you, you must enjoy the Bieber's and the Spier's then. Next, why on earth would you be seeking out anything from Journey's first 3 albums, and absolutely do not check out their Dream after Dream album, which has Steve Perry singing,. Just do not due it, it will underwhelm you, although it is Journey's finest hour with Perry involved.
I have the Dream after Dream album, and I like it, although not as much as their other albums. Steve Perry has a voice that can make me stop and listen, no matter what he sings. I have nothing against instrumentation, and Journey does it very well, but as I said, it's the voice that makes me come back for more. And no, I'm not a Beiber fan, his voice is nothing special, IMHO.
I don't get why the first three albums keep getting referenced as being dominated by guitar solos. There's a greater focus on instruments with less lyrics to get in the way, but much of that sounds the same to me as it would if a voice was singing the melody instead of an instrument. And there were only three songs without vocals, anyway, so it's not like very few songs had them. The song here, "Kohoutek", is one of the only ones where a song exists to serve a solo; in most cases, the solo serves the song. Pretty much any other case where it's just a solo is at the end of a song.
What has Perry done before or after Journey? That us right..Nothing! But get fat as hell! He would have remained a nobody on the chicken farm (where Journey plucked him from) in Hanford, were it not for those world class musicians. If he was soooo great all by himself, why had he given up on music and was shoveling shit on his step dads chicken farm?
They already had a great voice..Greg's voice..in the r&rhf twice...with Santana and Journey...so is Schon. They did not need anything..just more exposure.

Technically yes, but Tickner was more of a rhythm guitarist and left just after their initial release.
@@dadduorp Yep, he did so to go to med school.
Steve Smith is a pro, but he ain't no Ansley Dunbar!!
Yes Dunbar on Wheel in the sky live performances he was stronger than Smith.
Not in this genre, now if you were doing Jazz, the opposite is true. It is what it is better at some, not as good at others...
You forgot Aynsley Dunbar. Smith did not join until after 'Wheel In The Sky'.
Steve Smith joined Journey on the Evolution album.
@@petermcallister8489 'Wheel In The Sky' was off of 'Infinity' which came out before 'Evolution'.
@@synthonaplinth5980 why are you telling me stuff I already know? Dunbar played on the Infinity album. Steve Smith did not.
@@petermcallister8489 Okay, apologies. Your previous comment did not state that.
As good as Steve Smith is, he's no Dunbar, Aynsley smokes on the original and live versions of this track with a much better groove too, especially during Schon's solo. Interesting how the version here is slowed down a bit. .
Smith is an infinitely better drummer than Dunbar. He knows the value of space, silence and timing. Whereas Dunbar does not, he was always too loud.
the real journey...steve smith was right on with Ansley's licks...
Except that Steve used a double kick where Aynsley used a single.
@METALkid614 no, there was no smoke. I was there, it simply melted. ;-D

I have first 3 Journey albums, they are the only ones I like. Journey went from a progressive rock band to a pop band not after Gregg Rolie left. Jonathan Cain was from the pop group The Babys. First album with Steve perry was ok , he shared singing with Gregg Rolie.
Totally agree, the 3 first are the only one' sworth having (in my humble opinion)
Well can't blame all the Baby's who played in Journey. One is/was/is again, a kick ass musician.
Gregg was still in the band for 3 more albums after Steve Perry joined in 1977.
I have first 3 albums
@@richardjames7382 Listen to Dream After Dream from 1981 only released in Japan, as it would of bombed in N America, the teenyboppers would of rebelled. Rolie's last album.
What a monster band huh !!
Ross Valerie , such a character 😅
Schon was a BEAST
This tour seems to be a transition between old/original Journey, more progressive, jam session, orignal influences and the «new« Steve Perry, more melodic, voice centered Journey. Interesting.
As far as I can tell a representative of the record company told the band the next album needed to sell better ( reach at least a million units ) or they'd get dropped. So what else could they have done?
Then, when Rolie left he recommended to the band that they get Cain to replace him.
Some of you people have so much anger, needing someone to blame, for stuff that happened over 40 years ago that isn't even a true tragedy.
They could of done what Rush did, but then again, at least Rush's record company pushed the hell out of 2112, which Journey's reps never did, nor have them do long tours in Europe where this incarnation, could of opened for Gentle Giant, Hawkwind etc , then played smaller venues, and been in their pocket and where they would of been far more appreciated.
so good!
Film editors, take note: nobody wants to watch the bass player, either his playing or his face, during an epic, solo by the guitarist.
KOHOUTEK!!!!!! KOHOUTEK!!!!!!
Soooo, FNnnnn Rocks!!!!!!!
THE master NEAL SCHON,! malmsteen! Said ! on fc,you are a first class gay, and a hell off a guitarist!, NEAL has soo many rock friends! and he`s being there fore ever..
Sorry Steve is not Aynsley...and Aynsley is not Steve. Album version.
Indeed Steve for Jazz and Blues, Aynsley for Rock of all styles.
Lets get these years right , I am not so sure but this is 74 or 75
Steve Smith and Steve Perry were not in the band in 74 or 75. Aynsley Dunbar would still be in the band, George Tickner would be playing rhythm guitar.
Yeah Greg Rollie, Steve Perry sitting out on this early song.Just got done starting the the new year off with some Journey, thanks.
One of the only pre-1978 selections the band had covered in the group's early successful period. Kudos to Gregg Rolie, of course!
This is 1980
The year of this concert is... but the original album this song was released on was from 1975.
On Captured, journey should have omitted Dixie highway and put either this one or of a lifetime.
briljant !!!!!!!
If you like jam Journey, with guitar leads longer than 20 seconds, watch my videos of Neal Schon’s Journey Through Time.
what a machine
Schon is a fucking monster....add in Steve Smith, one of the greatest drummers in history..what a shame Perry ruined this band in '86/
Yeap it is a real shame.
Get your facts straight -- Schon ruined Journey. End of story.
artdrtr2 Explain, please.
artdrtr2 lol you are dead wrong. Do research before saying stuff that isnt true
pryt86 Let's hear him explain his point of view first. I want to hear this!
Whats Guitar use neal?
Good stuff here fuck that popular shit
Soooo, FU$&@ Rocks
Dunbar is superior.
Thrash + doom before invented.
The great Aynsley Dunbar on drums he even gave Carl Palmer a run for his money But ultimately the great Carl Palmer wins out😊
This was Steve Smith on drums, Aynsley was on the Album, but had left by this point, as he didn't want to have to choke out Steve Perry.
@@toddstevens13 and of course you're right I didn't realize at first this was 1980 I saw him in 1975 open up for ELP. My bad hahaha
Dunbars touch of ZAPPA!!!
WTF MAN....JOURNEY MUTHERFUCKING ROCKS THIS SONG....
Welcome to the real Journey "Tay", enjoy.
@@toddstevens13 all i every knew was the first 3 albums..(wink!) very enjoyable..thx
@@TheTayedrums Have you tried their Dream After Dream soundtrack from the Japanese Movie of the same name. It is the only thing with Perry that is not pop, etc., and why they never released it in North America as the teeny boppers would of lost their minds. It is "out there"
Seen this journey live twice... Neil, Gregg ,Ansley and Ross. Steve Perry sucks net commercial the first three albums are Perry Free!
Amazing song from amazing musicians before they completely sold themselves out.
pryt86 This type of song would have meant an early end to the Journey story. Fortunately that story includes ALL iterations of a great band.
Young Bruce Springsteen with toupee wearing a jumpsuit? Looks ridiculous but sounds great!
Mico Wikström Springsteen sucks! He sounds like he is vomiting when he sings.
Bruce Springsteen WISHES he could play like this.
It's called overalls dumbass! I can tell you have never been out of the city wimp!
Too bad they sucked after this
Not nearly as good without Aynsley Dunbar
Meh! Grown past this .
Drugs don't add a thing.
