1001, 1002... Metal Detecting a Never Ending Field of Old Lost Treasure!

- Some people compare metal detecting to fishing. Both are similar in that you are hoping for a "bite" and then you try to bring a big one up to the surface! Once you find a hot spot in fishing you can keep going back to that area for years and years, catching more and more fish as they spawn. That's not the case for metal detecting though, as once you pull things from the ground they're not getting replenished and the spot runs dry quickly and you have to move on, often forever. This is the scenario we deal with everywhere we go, we hunt it hard for a little while but then have to move on, never to return. But there are often exceptions to the rules and this place is at the top of the exception list, our Field of 1000 Holes!
This place is just magical where every year we hunt it hard and pull out hundreds and hundreds of items. Then at the end of the season when the farmer prepares for a planting, he does a rare deep plow, turning over the top 16" of soil which makes this place like new again. Now the deep plow doesn't necessarily mean that he's bringing things up from the depths, although that does happen, but even just slightly adjusting the way items are laying throughout the field can make all the difference for our detectors to lock on to these targets better.
Now because this field has such thin sandy soil it doesn't freeze easily, so we typically try to save coming here for the coldest and most frozen days of winter, when all our other farm fields are frozen solid. But once each season opens we try to do a "test run" just to make sure this place is going to be productive for yet another season, and so far it has never let us down! So let's fire up the machines, our pockets ready to be filled, and start the 2023 Metal Detecting season at our Field of One Thousand Holes!

Those digs are awesome. Something beautiful in every hole or clump. If I was there I would bring my box of large baggies and put the finds in the bag without looking. That would be a great gift to give at parties and Christmas.

Great finds guys! I remember back in the fifties being fascinated by my grandmother’s wicker sewing basket that was decorated with Chinese coins with the square holes.

Those little padlocks were used on linked jewellery braclets. 🤓. Over here across the pond I have found them with short lengths of chain still attatched mainly in copper alloy but silver and gold ones exist. 🙂.

It was a 1890 O Morgan dollar.

Man I lived in lower Bucks for 12 -15 years and didn’t realize that living inside Washingtons Crossing PA had its benefits. I wish everything didn’t have to be hush hush as far a location.
With the incredible amount of items that have come out of that field, I'm left with a question.
