Archeology & Anthropology. I’m Hispanic and for as long as I can remember, I’ve been absolutely obsessed with trying to learn everything I can about my ancestors. My great great grandmother didn’t even speak Spanish. She spoke the Nahuatl language. My great grandmother would have to translate for my grandmother because she never learned the language. I wish she had. I hope to one day be able to visit the Mayan pyramids, Aztec temples and other locations. I’ve read many books trying to learn how to read the hieroglyphics. 😁

What a rabbit hole! I never, ever thought of the Roman Empire until as a teen I visited England and noticed how the people there seemed to have an obsession about it and practically worshipped the Ancient Romans, always pointing out the structures and roads that were built by the Romans. Personally, I’d until then simply thought of the Romans as horribly violent and immoral people, obsessed with revenge, mayhem as entertainment, and sex orgies. But it put me on a path of learning more about it, and over the years I have thought more and more about the Roman Empire and by now at age 70, I am drawn to the subject often. I was a fan years ago of the television series called Rome, I read a few light mystery books set in Rome, and nowadays I’ve been listening to a podcast by someone who speaks about Stoicism and the writings of Marcus Aurelius. (Not to mention the political environment in the U.S. and elsewhere that begs comparison with The Fall of same.) And I guess I’d name TH-cam as my Roman Empire because I’m on it daily going from video to video of interest, learning and improving my life. Before that, Alice in Wonderland , books by Kurt Vonnegut, and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy could have been named because of all the times I quoted them (note my first sentence about the rabbit hole).

Married to a high school history (and math) teacher...we met in a medieval re-enactment group. I have begun to learn Latin recently too so the actual Roman Empire has not been forgotten in this household, lol.
The Legend of King Arthur - Lancelot, Guinevere, Merlin, Excalibur, Knights of the Round Table, castles, etc.
My Roman Empire musically is Jean-Michel Jarre, Oxygen 4, never fails to lift my spirits.

I definitely have more than one Roman Empire, but the one that comes to mind is Pride and Prejudice. I love most things to do with love. ❤️ Elizabeth Bennet taught me a lot about self-worth and about being true to yourself. This is the first I’ve heard about the trend, but I like that it helps us to be reflective.

Marc Bolan (T. Rex) is my Roman Empire. I also love A Room With a View. My five favorite films of all time would probably be the Wizard of Oz, Withnail and I, Harold and Maude, The Philadelphia Story, and Franco Zeferelli’s version of Romeo and Juliet. I love movies and I could list 1 million of them! I could list 1 million books also, but my favorite novel of all time is Frenchman’s Creek by Daphne DuMaurier. They made a film of that in the ‘40s and it was great, but I can’t get my hands on it. It was better than any of the remakes. Great reading, Gemma! Makes sense. Tough times. Thank you! 💕💕

I love A Room with a View! Both the film and the book. I didn't know Julian Sands had passed. 😮😢 So many lovely scenes. It still tickles me whenever I am outdoors working in the yard and my husband calls from a window, "Beauty!" 😂❤ My Roman Empire is the same almost every day: Tarot and whatever novel I am reading. 😊
I daily think about the Roman Empire. I work with dogs we refer to different dogs that have popular names, like a new dog was introduced to us & now she is known & written as Molly IX
When I'm stuck in traffic because of road works, using the local baths & I often quote/ mumble to myself Shakespeare Julius Caeser as it was one that I had to study in secondary over 30 years ago & stuck with me. I haven't heard of the trend until now

I can't think of a personal Roman Empire at the moment but if you can have lots I'll definitely be able to come up with some, loved A Room with a View❤❤ and all the '80s Merchant & Ivory films, and certainly Mr. "only connect' E.M. Forster ... I actually know who Gaius Flavius (clever) actually was; The Roman Emperor Constantine The Great (1st official Roman Christian) because he was born in Nis (pronounced confusedly, 'Nish') which is in modern day Serbia, and where my Dad, a lover of the ancient classical world, who was born there in 1908, went to University. (That was a bit serpentine lol.)

Today is the half way point between the Winter Solstice and the First Day of Spring …. Days are becoming noticeably longer, there’s a shift happening in the air and earth.❤
My Roman Empire is the Lizzie Borden murders in Fall River, MA in 1892. Combine a paranormal investigation at the Lizzie Borden B&B and it is just fascinating! Loved A Haunting in Venice - Kenneth Branagh, excellent mystery.

My empires are in imbolc. Million miles of crochet. Trying really hard to not have to repeat this type of lifetime, if indeed, we live many lifetimes. Learning to communicate. Haunting in Venice a wonderful murder mystery movie. Actor Kenneth Branagh plays Mr. Hercules Poirot. I watch all Agatha Christie movies esp with Branagh playing Poirot. Hes a great actor! I love me a good murder mystery!

I think about A Room With a View all the time too! Speaking as a fellow fan, I think you’re due a rewatch because you’re mixing up multiple scenes 🤭 It’s one of the few movies I actually own and sometimes I’ll just watch the beginning because I love the opening music and visuals so much 🤩 This is very far from cool, but my Roman Empire is probably the kind of unresponsive I’ve had feelings for for ages… the neurons on that pathways are well and truly wired 😅 After him I probably think most about astrology and food ⭐️🥣
I love EM Forster. Room with a View is wonderful. I adore both Helena Bonham Carter and Julian Sands. However,my favorite of the three (Maurice,being the other) is Howard's End. That has stayed with me throughout.
I don't know if that is my Roman Empire because I have many loves and obsessions,Boadicea ( or Boudicca) is one of them.
Howards End though is so rich with the injustices of class, family tradition,love and loyalty. It is story that comes close to an incident in my family history where a female relative was cheated out of her inheritence. And the end is so heartbreaking to me. Love of home,a special family place that has been loved by several generations but no longer belongs to anyone except in memory haunts me nearly always.

My Roman Empire…I’d have to give it a think but off the top of my head: LOTR (can never not reference it lol) and Jane Austen’s Persuasion (that letter! 💕💌). Oh, and I do think of the actual Roman Empire sometimes too, just last night in fact! Lol

Really sorry about the break up, that’s horrible. I read a book once called ‘it’s called a break up because it’s broken” it was a difficult read but actually very good. Best advice if you are in the abyss is to get a teddy bear. Really works to help you when you’re totally lost 🧸

I really don’t think I’ve ever given the Roman Empire a thought other than in history class. My history class was so boring. I had a teacher with a monotone voice who simply wrote the days reading assignment on the board and we all sat reading silently. History definitely did not come alive in that class. So what do you wonder about it on the daily Gemma?

Catching up on readings. Love the hot pink hoodie with the J pull, Princess Leia in the spotlight. Don't go to the cinema, streaming is my thing, can't stand the high volume and love pausing if needed. I do think of the Roman Empire in terms of gladiators and wars, also astrology though mostly stolen from the Greeks. What's my Roman Empire...going to the farmers market, streaming, podcasts, youtube, and today preparing a huge bag of recycling, hard to recycle items into a monthly bag, sorted by types into small cotton bags they provide. A way to get ride of all of the things that I've been wanting to properly recycle. It is a fee/subscription but worth it. I will probably stream The Holdovers. I do love that six of cups card and that cat deck.
I go to a quieter art house type cinema these days. You can book a sofa and they show films that are more gentle on the ears! 🍿
