It is not that he or she is not happy with his or her life but it can also be that they want to recall their past memories (not for escaping but just for recalling). Nowadays it's also a way to show off in front of the people around them. They want to show off that they have been to this or that place showing that they are rich or something like that. Sam was a person who developed multiple personality disorder... He himself created 3 characters charley, Louisa and sam out of himself and he already subconsciously knew he want to escape the world full of stress by any means like through stamps and third level ..he was a phychatrist so he tried to give himself a logical reason but the overpowerness of the anxiety had led him hallucinate a reason to prove the third level real, he created louisa that was a part of his(a phychatrist's) brain who constantly reminds him to stop looking for escapism...as the last line says that he can't continue his old business that is because he knew the character sam has lost his mind means he failed as a phystraist because he falied to treat his own mental disorder, he was happy in his own world so he never wanted to return and wanted keep searching for third level or we can say keep searching for a way to escape
