    most important bit at 1:06 that so many people don't get when they scold cyclists for "ignoring" red lights. we don't ignore them but take them as a hint. we have to take responsibility for our safety anyway - a green light does not guarantee it at all - thus we go whenever it is safe not when some insignificant light is on.

      Yes, I don't cycle as I live in a cycling death trap but walk for short journeys and take the bus for longer ones. On foot I just look both ways and cross based on my own judgement, at some junctions, you'll be waiting about 2 minutes to cross. I'll look at the light, but won't robotically follow it, I find it a double standard to disapprove of a bike running a red light so much more than crossing the road on a red man, I don't really see the major difference, people don't think rules are meant to be followed to the letter regardless, rules are supposed to be used as a guideline of what you perhaps should do, but not as God's law and not all rules are sensible and have a good reason, I hate following and break rules that I don't think are in place for a good reason if I can get away with it

    My concern is here that the police simply took the advantage to give cyclist tickets for no reason, if it indeed was known that something like signs that weren't needed on that location or simply the delay cause..
    Perhaps the police should observe the situation and report before they actually stop people and give them a additional bill.
    But ofcourse, that's not how the police want to look at things.

Try crossing the Europalaan-Zuid on the three junctions Winthontlaan/Hollantlaan, Australiëlaan and next to the Europaplein roundabout at street level (so not via the cyclists tunnel): very long waiting times! Here in the UK The Traffics can often not see/ detect cyclist when they are at a red light. The lights for the adjacent traffic will turn red but if I am on a bike mine will remain on red then the adjacent will turn green again. This will leave me with little chose but to jump the lights.

    It's so good to see there are people somewhere, that think like me. It's unfortunate that I live in Poland, where if you cross a intersection on red light, even though it's completly safe, people consider you as a bandit and treat like you just murdered someone...
    Some people respect the law too much, and they seem to not notice, that the law in some situations is not working well, and it's just better to think for yourself, than blindly follow the rules.
    There is also another thing that pisses me off. I don't know how is it in other countries, but in Poland you are not allowed to cross a road on pedestrian crossing while cycling. You are supposed to go off a bike, walk with it through the crossing, and then get on a bike again. In most of the situations this is really pointless, but police can punish you for it anyways.

      +Timothy Fish When you immediately start cycling when the light turns green you have no way out in case a turning truck cuts you off. But you can jump a red light any time you want. Unless you pick the wrong moment. So stupid cyclists stop for red. Smart cyclists always jump red. That's it basically. Not sure the police will understand. Let us know the outcome if you think you belong in the second category.

    • @TimothyFish
      @TimothyFish 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      drie wiel The guy in the video was doing more than jumping a red light, he was weaving through traffic. As for starting immediately on green, the bigger danger is that you might get hit by someone running a red light.

      Ttrucker There's a big difference between cyclists who treat red lights like two-way stop signs -- stopping, checking traffic, yielding, and then eventually going through on red -- and cyclists who continue at speed through a red light. I think we can all agree that the latter are a dangerous nuisance. The former, however, are not hurting anybody and are only trying to get where they're going as quickly and safely as possible, and I do believe that in that situation its safer for these cyclists to simply go through when it is safe than to wait for the light to tell them so.

    Here in Groningen there are quite a lot of intersections that have green for all cyclists at the same time so you can make a left turn as well. While that's a nice idea, the problem i have with these intersections is that is that it's only green when it's green in all directions. many times i see pedestrian lights green while bike lights are not and people continueing to wait for the red traffic light. There's plenty of times where i'm the only one ignoring the red light in favour of the green pedestrian light, because i know it's safe to cross. I seriously doubt that the benefit of being able to turn left weighs up against the less times green going straight ahead as most people need to go straight.
    Now i've written an e-mail to fiets stad Groningen, but they say that it's not possible to have the all directions green at one time and green for going straight at another time. I can see a simple solution to this, having the pedestrian lights be a combined light for both pedestrians and cyclists going straight and keeping the all directions green lights.
    Maybe you can address these crossings in one of your videos

    • @royhoeksema5720
      @royhoeksema5720 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      frisianmouve I live in Groningen, and I sincerely think that doing so is a VERY bad idea since most crossing located on the diepenring actually have a higher density of cyclists than cars during rush hour. This means that having all of them cross with pedestrians at the same time could cause dangerous situations for the pedestrians.

    Hi markenlei the first junction ought to be a simultaneous green. I also saw a later (faulty) junction that does not obey sustainable safety principles in that a motorist who wanted to turn left had to yield to oncoming vehicles (including bicycles) whereas the norm now in NL is that green means go, meaning there should be a left turn arrow for that motorist. That would surely help at a junction near my apartment, where I often witness conflict and near misses.
    As you said, there is always room for improvement and I sure would love to have wide paths plus superb safe junctions in my neighbourhood!!

    ok, it's probably the most important road in the city, with 2 bridges and a train station along its route going all the way from north to south.
    anyway they set up a green wave for automobilists that keep to a certain speed, so they can flow the green lights
    but the absolute PoS doesn't bother to check whether there's 1 car or 1000 cars and just dumb rotates the sequence regardless of the traffic.
    so yeah we're running red lights

    My city just recently built a junction with extreme wait times for cyclist. I didn't measure the duration, but I waited so long that the light went through at least 10 different phases before allowing me to pass. And since it was an indirect left turn, I had to wait for the first light to clear out. And to make matter worst, I had to cross a right turning lane before waiting for the first light, and as usual in this god-forsaken country cars have priority over cyclists, so I had to wait there too. And the worst is that this junction is considered to be excellent bike infrastructure since the bike lanes are separated from the road (it's actually a mixed-use sidewalk with a painted line in the middle, nothing fancy).
    Not the junction only but the whole stretch of road is awfully designed, with bike lanes that dumps you onto dangerous roundabouts or bus lanes where you actually have to yield to buses coming from behind you. There's a sloped section that's so bad it's almost funny, where there is a mixed-use sidewalk going downhill (at a relatively steep gradient) and only a painted bike lane going uphill, where cars love to pass you very close by.
    It's really hard to believe that all of his was built last year, not 10 years ago, and is supposed to be excellent bike infrastructure by current standards...

    A little bit of a solution is glooming on the horizon. A bridge across the Merwedekanaal from the Kanaalweg to the Heycopplantsoen and a tunnel beneath the railway to the Nicolaas Beetsstraat are parts of a missing bypass connection from the southwestern side of Utrecht to the northeastern side of the city. However, this is just planned for years to come, 2025 is the earliest year for it to happen.
    It will shorten the route to the Maliebaan by about a kilometer and take away much of the bicycle traffic at the Ledig Erf crossing.

    This needs to be replaced by a Dutch roundabout to stop this. The same thing can happen to drivers. They complain that the red light was too long when there was no traffic in the cross-street. Now the same thing happens to cyclists. It's absolutely unacceptable that the green and red time can multiply by 5 in just one night even for drivers and pedestrians. I remember that before the Poynton intersection was replaced, the green time for cars and the red time for pedestrians was unacceptable.

    Fine illustration of the clear spatial injustice of the Dutch infrastructure. Hundreds of cyclists packed onto a sliver of cycle-lane while a handful of motorists get the lion's share of the total roadspace. Any cyclist with the temerity to fight this injustice by using the main carriageway will get aggressively klaxoned by the motorists, and a ticket if the cops catch them. Netherlands infra is a Fordist paradise: fortune.com/2015/09/30/best-country-drive-waze/

      Kinda weird to post that on a video about a part of Utrecht that is already considered to not be a very fine example of the overall infrastructure. It's not even representative of Utrecht, let alone the country as a whole.
      Also, the article you link to only illustrates how excellent cycling infrastructure does not have to mean you will have a horrible experience as a driver. You need to remember that most Dutch adults are both a car driver and a cyclist. The balance is pretty good as long as you use each mode of transport what it was designed for. If you take too much space away from either mode, you will still piss off the same people: everybody.

    • @Martijn-oc3kl

      I would like to think that our police does follow the book to the letter, as do our citizens. Laws are made for all of us to abide to. If you decide to not follow the road laws and get run over by a car, it is traumatic for so many people.
      that being said, In my experience the dutch police use nuance and context in a lot of cases. Warnings/'don't do it again' apply a lot of times. Except with these kind of pre-thought out actions where they will fine people for a day at a certain spot (because of blatant systemetic law breaking). I don't pity the people that get a fine for crossing the red light,especially if they do it systematically
