I knew a Man who was a Pilot in a B24 Liberator..The sights He Saw was a Hell only those men there would ever understand..Mr Bednarik had those same Memories and Probably spent every Day trying be busy enough to keep those memories from haunting him..My Main Respect is for his Service to Our Country and the World he made a better place..
The NFL made a list of top 100 players a number of years ago and Bednarik came in at number 35. Not really knowing that much about him at the time, I didn't think that much of it and thought "Excellent honor for Chuck being thought of as one of the 35 best players of all-time." But now in 2020, I believe he was underrated on that list and should have at least been in the top 20. He was on the field almost every game for 14 years playing both center and linebacker, and those are two positions where you can't fake being tough nor can you fake being smart. IMO he's the greatest Philadelphia Eagle of all-time and should get more chatter as being the best player in NFL history.
Absolutely agree. If you ever hear Bill Belichick talk about him and his game you'd appreciate him even more. People who are more familiar with Belichick (because he's a modern coach) and his defensive prowess, should take a minute and appreciate his views on the man. Especially when he describes not just that single play but how much you could take him in his prime and put him in a modern day NFL game and he'd still be just as successful and possibly still be able to be a 60 minuteman.

I worshipped #60 as a kid, he later lived near by. My WW2 Vet Father & Chuck knew each other well. He did not like the direction the NFL was heading then, he would be discussed with most of today's players and every rotten executive & team owner.

I remember seeing him at practice one day while I was warming up before practice in training camp with the EAGLES at Widener College ... I was warming up with Herman Edwards, and I asked who that was ... ?? Herman said , that is Chuck Bednarik ... he about killed Frank Gifford on a hit ... I was in AWWWW ... seeing him stand there like he was carved out of rock ... It was a thrill to see him !!!
100 Greatest Tackles, a film I always watched as a kid in the 90's, the #1 hit was that Frank Gifford hit and I'll never forget Chuck Bednarik explaining that hit and all I could see was his pinky finger at a 90 degree angle... Legends like this never die.
In the 1990's the local pbs station , WHYY, did a documentary about Philly spots. Mr.Bednerik was at the press preview and he waited afterwards to meet any fan who wished to speak to him. He was super nice to all of us and standing next to him for a photo, I was astonished by his great physical presence even as an elderly man. He still was like a brick wall. "Concrete Charlie "indeed.
Touching story as i have a tear in my eye...i loved watching ole footage of him (Chuck B.) and fell like i knew him. My father was a Packers fan growing up in Wisconsin of German descent. Dad was a Navy man 28 years and ironically died on March 21, 2015 the same exact date Chuck B. passed. Also, ironic after a nearly 14 year battle with Dementia/Atzheimer (didnt know any of us for years) , dad loved the Chuck B's of the day and was a big fan of him...every day and on that day , i not only think of Dad but a man that i never met and wished that i had. GOD BLESS THEM BOTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's weird for a 22-year-old to say Chuck Bednarik is my idol to football fans because my current generation doesn't know who he is. My father, Rex Morgan Sr., was a teammate of your grandfather on the undefeated 1947 Penn team. Like your grandfather, my dad was a decorated World War II veteran who served in the European Theater. Before the war, Dad was a starting tackle, but upon his return to school in 1947, he didn't play much, feeling that the 'spark was gone' at 26 years old. Nevertheless, he remained a larger-than-life character on the team and campus. In the early 1960s, Dad worked as a broadcaster and personality with Channel 6, WFIL-TV in Philadelphia. During that time, he hired Chuck as a sportscaster for the local evening news. I had the opportunity to meet Chuck for the first time at Channel 6 and distinctly remember him proudly showing off his gnarled hand. A few years ago, I crossed paths with Chuck again at the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame dinner and had a pleasant chat with him. He shared some lovely memories about my father. God bless Chuck and all the football 'Mungermen!'"

It's weird to think of now but before Lurie, things got real messy with Brahman. I remember quite a few season openers being blacked out on TV because they didn't sellout. People even thought Jeff might move the team to L.A. because of his movie connections at first. Not even 10 years later all the old players are back to honor the vet before it's last game as the Linc was being opened and the Eagles were in the midst of a 4 year run to the Conference Finals and a SB appearance at the end.
So what position will he play? Center? Uhhh Aaron Donald, Ndamukong Suh, Fletcher Cox, Chris Jones, JJ Watt, Cam Jordan, and many more defensive lineman would humble him BIG TIME. 4:33 I've seen video of the whole play and the photograph taken is VERY misleading. It makes it look Chuck was standing over Frank, gloating with that fist. But, if you watch the video, you can see Chuck just spinning around after the play is over in one fluid motion. The camera just happens to perfectly catch him in his twirl to look as menacing as he did.

A tremendous player and a wonderful person. Although I was a NY Giants fan as a young child, my first helmet was an Eagles helmet because of Bednarek.

Dad is buried in Arlington (section 12 7442 ) (Alan Lee Smith) Where is Chuck B. buried would like to visit if ever in the area.
