  • Padraig Og O' Ruaric, historian and author of "The Disappeared" speaks to us about his the forced disappearances the have taken place for political reasons in Ireland's often bloody history.
We speak about the different reasons for forced disappearances in Ireland's war of independence and civil war committed by both Irish guerrilla fighters and the British Army. Padraig tells us about the history of informers and spies within Ireland's conflicts and how the "good old IRA" would deal with them.
We also discussed the most high-profile cases of forced disappearances in the Northern Ireland conflict including Jean McConville, Capt Robert Nairac, the MRF agents known as "the Freds" and much more.
I would throughly recommend Padraig's book for anyone interested in Irish history, very well written and structured piece of work.

Touchy subject for Ira supporters , They don’t like to be reminded of this vile practice , from cork in 1920,s to divis flats in 1970,s , they scraped the barrel of inhuman acts while bleating about the injustices of the British..

They came to our Land uninvited, and litterly took over.
      Best be quiet.

That sort of intimidation doesn’t fly now boyo. Anytime I encounter Shinners now I laugh in their faces and remind them they lost. The struggle was about equality and gay marriage. Sure thing !

My friend Thomas Spence was disappeared in November 1974 on the Falls road - near the the Whiterock road junction, him and another boy John Rodgers 13.
Thomas was age 11 at the time. The disappeared are usually adults, but in this case it was two children, which is horrific IMO.

What happened to them? Did anyone admit to it or were they ever found? They seem too young to know any secrets.

Nobody knows what has happened them, they are still "missing". There was a huge search for a long time, but nothing turned up.They were on their way to their special school needs in North Belfast that day.As for knowing secrets,Thomas was an 11 year old child and he had a part-time job selling the Belfast Telegraph at the end of his street. In a period of a few month around their disappearance other children had gone missing as well. Its all still unsolved and with very weak media coverage of these events at the time.

Andrew Spence of East Belfast was disappeared on his way home from the Belfast City centre in December 1989. His body was found in a storm drain in the markets area 1996 during work for the new buildings. Most likely killed by republicans since that is their area. Add that to your book.

there’s a few things wrong with the info on some of these documentaries , 2 men and the mother that was never given up , the mother was a Protestant married a Catholic so who’s thought of the same as me that she could have been taken by any of the butchers apron mob , the 2 traitors that then gave the IRA info concerning the van may not have been took out by the IRA but by the british army in retaliation for passing over that info . maybe thats why the IRA couldn’t give the location of these bodies
